That's one of the beauties of HS hockey is there is a JV team and calling players up isn't a problem. Rosters can change week to week. Just seems so focused on the W-L record as opposed to the experience. Small roster seems a little more of a AAA mentality. It's one thing for the small programs where skater #17 isn't close to skater #12 but for the larger programs to take this approach seems surprising. Even if the 4th line doesn't get much ice historically they're at least invited along.

Minnetonka isn't exactly loaded for bear. They don't have a really big-time scorer on the team (they were led by a D last year of course and will this year too). Remember, last year they had trouble scoring against good teams, like they were shut out by Edina and twice by Hopkins. I assume this year will be the same.
That group that took them to the U12 state tournaments is now sophomores and juniors and they're very good, but they're not scary offensively at this level. They didn't look that great the second half of the game vs. HM.

Tonka girls numbers are down this year compared to previous years as they invited back kids cut last year to get a full JV team in place. With that said there's only a couple at JV who will get much of a varsity shot this year but a handful who could play for most other HS programs.

Big drop off from top few JV players to all the rest.

HS coach didn't want to pull from 14U and cause number issues there unless the player was a varsity lock or goalie and there was only one of each.

I think that's a sign that it's a well-run program. Numbers rise and fall, elite-type players come and go, but a coach who sees the big picture and doesn't panic and rush 8th graders and freshman into places they don't belong will have a strong team without drama year in and year out.
Coach Scheid at Stillwater has found success with this formula. His Varsity roster this year features zero freshmen. Last year there was one freshman to start the season and a couple more 'earned' V playing time eventually as the season went on. The 8th graders play U14.

Tonka doesn't have numbers issues at 14U, but they do at JV and Varsity. Play-up policy has changed from year to year. That being said, varsity, although a small team, is very strong. Just need to avoid illness and injury and have enough wheels left at season's end.

LPH rankings vs. KACH

Post by grlzhockeyrocks »

I have never paid much attention to the LPH rankings, usually based on emotional B.S. and nothing really scientific. I can't remember who, but someone in years past has posted a weekly ranking called the KACH (I think) system. It took in several factors such as difficulty of schedule and used a mathematical formula to come up with rankings. Does anyone know what or who did this in the past? Much more accurate than anything I have seen to date.

The system is called KRACH, and on this forum it has traditionally been maintained by ghshockeyfan. No indication yet that he will do it for this year.

I looked at KRACH last year and, while I would have added a few tweaks, I liked it's mathematical and statistical components vs. the LPH emotional and political components and thought it did a very good job. That being said, hockey is an emotional game and you'll always have some occasional strange results, but KRACH does a better job with the more data it has. Early season LPH probably is better because KRACH doesn't yet have the data, but KRACH quickly takes over and has a much better predictive value.

LPH rankings for Dec 2 are out. Still no top 20 for Shakopee, despite a 6-1-1 record including some very lopsided wins. Only loss was to Hopkins (3-1-1), and tied Anoka (4-0-1) while Hespenheide (one of state's top scorers) was out sick. Hmmmm....

I think the non ranking for Shakopee is correct. Tied #16 Anoka and lost to #18 Hopkins. Have not played another top 20 team and the way to get in the rankings is to beat top 20 teams. Has not happened yet.

rosemount is 5-0 and have beaten some pretty good teams, they should be higher up in the rankings

I agree rosemount is a solid squad, I've only seen them play once this year, but they have two scoring lines, and some solid D, but I think most the teams above them have better goaltending. On seeing them play I thought they should be a top 10 team, but then I look at this list, and I wouldn't move any of the teams above them down, so 13 seams like a good spot for now, if they beat L. South then we can talk.

Agreed, it seems like in past years KRACH has a few oddities early in the season, but typically after the holiday tournament time, it seemed pretty spot on IMO

Dec 9 is out: http://www.letsplayhockey.com/1025rankings.pdf Looks like not including Shakopee was indeed correct, since they lost to Chaska. South St Paul's upset over Anoka helped their rank.

It's early for a computer algorithm to work well with so few data points, however interesting to compare this to the QRF released today as well:

What's the complaint? Tying CEC, losing to Chaska, only significant win is over HM, which is looking less and less significant after Tuesday.....I'd say 9th is more than what the Eagles deserve.
