Anything can happen tonight

Post by Snap Shot »

I don't even know where to begin to make a prediction for this potential classic tonight.

Since the seeds were set, I fully expected a Tonka-Edina final. In an ideal world, both teams would be "rested" and ready to play their best game. But that's not how this tourney goes sometimes as we know.

I saw two of the three Tonka-Edina games this year. I think both teams learned valuable lessons from each of those games. When Tonka thumped Edina 7-1 at Pagel I think Edina learned that if you don't move at top speed vs. Tonka you're going to get blown off the ice.

In the final game at Braemar the first period looked like a repeat as Tonka put on a clinic and built a 4-0 lead. Then Tonka went to sleep and to Edina's credit, they came out flying in the second and third, clawed back to a tie and eventual overtime win 5-4. I think Tonka learned in that game that if they fall asleep, stop moving the feet, and don't finish checks, any good team can beat them, any day.

Tonka may have fallen asleep a bit last night but you have to give HM credit for playing a great game too.

While Tonka has had the better of Edina this year overall, I have seen stretches in games where each team totally dominated the other for peroids of time. Now throw in that Tonka played two games last night, and things get really interesting tonight.

I could see any number of outcomes tonight.

-Edina comes out with fresh legs and builds a lead which a "tired" Tonka team is unable to overcome.

-Tonka runs on adrenaline and comes out thumping and flying and plays a great game, and puts a few "easy" goals past the Edina goaltender and wins handily.

-The two battle it out evenly punching back and forth for a one goal game in a tourney classic.

As big of a Tonka fan as I am, I could see either team winning this game, and possibly by more than two goals. No outcome would surprise me tonight.

One sometimes overlooked aspect of the Tonka team is the forwards, who do have the ability to explode offensively.

In the end my gut tells me that Krueger and Tonka's D may make the difference. It will probably be a battle to the end, and a close game.

I'll take Tonka 4-3 in a classic battle.

Go Skippers!

Tonka wins 2-0, Kruger is the difference. Edina outshoots the Skippers by a ton but can't get anything past the goal line.

Kill the Cake Eaters! Doesn't have the same passion as it used to back in the 80's. Not since the two classes A and AA started and the hatred for Privates started. Still like to see Tonka do it. If the Hornets were against the H-M preppies it would be Rah Rah Cake Eaters.

Hey Karl, Lee or any other east fans...

I wanna cheer for someone in this final, But dont know who to cheer for. They both beat east this yr, soooo/???

Im thinking of tonka, just for the fact that they beat Hill and Hill beat east, so basically just going for the winner of the bottom bracket that we were all in..

SOG: 6-6

Not much to separate them except that single early goal.

I was handed a "Skipper Nation" towel when I walked in, and I'll wave it with pride from my SRO position behind a goal in the upper deck if/when they score. So I'm with ya on the Tonka bandwagon.

Boy, Toyota is out in force in the advertising at this event. Toyota's new motto: "Don't slow down; go ALL out!"

More carelessness in the Tonka zone. 2-0 Edina on a carom off the back boards and Sit tucks in it.

Now 3-0 on a back-hander by Stolpestad.

Yeah, lucky bounce, but the Edina forward followed the puck in, the Tonka defender took his foot off the gas. Edina is out-hustling Tonka.

Sampson for Edina 4-0.

Careless mistakes by Tonka. Defenseman gets puck behind his own net; he throws the puck to the side where two Edina players await. Why? Why not simply skate the thing out himself? The turnover leads to Sampson's goal.

Basically its HUGE congrats to Edina. What a rollercoaster year. Amazing props to the program to lose that huge senior class and come back astonishingly strong.

I mean its over unless a miracle happens. Simply stunning. It just wasn't to be this year for Tonka. (just like last year for Edina, just the way it goes...)

Anyhow congrats on a great year for Tonka too.

Edina just wants it more. Their cycling and work ethic is what's so impressive. If this hold up this will hurt Tonka for years to come.

this is also another reason I thought Wayzata deserved to be there instead of tonka.. They would have performed much better.. Tonka hasnt even impressed me once this tourney.. Except for the goalies performance against hill

It's tough to come back after a late, emotional game at the X and bring your A game the next day. I've been there. I didn't quite see this happening but I expected Edina to take care of business tonight.

Stick a fork in the Skippers they're done. Unless a different Tonka team comes out in the 3rd. The Hornets want it more.

Finally, Prochno on the powerplay, 4-1.

And again! 4-2, Prochno with a blast from the blueline.
