gopherhockey1234: It's the way he treats kids? Winning is the only thing that matters to him. The kids mean nothing to him unless they make look good and he knows it. The guy's coaching is so washed up that he has forgotten that he is supposed to be there for kids not for the W. Thats whats wrong with Welch.
Its the way he treats the kids all he cares about is winning. this sounds like a sorry parent whos kid got cut from the team. Go cry me a river. Russ Welch no matter what anyones opinion on himj is knows he puts his heart into each and every kid on the team. One of my Ref buddies told me that russ crys after games he gets so emotional for these kids and he is so proud of what they do. It seems to me that he has the heart and desire to win and wants to instill it into his kids by hard work and dedication. I am calling it right now this is going to be a sepecial group of kids when its all said and done. The only ones left are the kids that love their town and love to play hockey. Maybe not the most skilled group in the conference but they have heart. This team won with out waxlax and the six others that left and they will continue to win. I have only seen one game but what i have seen from Horschat defense is a good start, and with Gleisner in net. Although i have not personally seen him play i believe his statistics say all that i need to. Their forwards didnt look too bad although they lacked taking the body but that was only one game i saw. Now i am not used to people leaving and quiting cuz in my town kids pray every night to mmake that varsity team and one day skate on that sheet. Call me crazy but isnt that what we all wanted?

Im so sick of everyone blaming the problems they have been having on welch. He is a very competitive and emotional coach.
Waxlax was and has been a cancer to that team since his sophmore year. He believes everything is about him. He is a skilled player but lacks the effort and mentality to be a special player. Russ gave waxlax another chance becuase he cares so much and waxlax turned right around and shoved it up his a**. He tried to help a kid straighten out and thats the thanks he gets. Good Luck to the Coach Welch and The Raiders on the rest of the season.

Hey Gordy wake up
Come live what we have to live with you would have a different view on the whole situation. If you are from Hastings you should understand what he has done to the youth program. If your not from town you will not understand it. But after all it is your first ever post, so we will give you a break. The coach needs to go. It's simple.

As a matter of fact i am from Hastings and I am a former player of his. Most of the people who have a hard-on for russ are people who think they got screwed. Becuase he cut them, yells to much, or whatever. Not everyone but 99% of those people. Get over yourselves. The fact is that he is very passionate about the game and his players. I couldnt of imagined playing for anyone else.
Gordo i would suggest you get back to class or find a subject you can speak intelligently about. This one's over your head. In their little winning streak Hastings has beaten the Mighty powers of New Richmond Wisc.--Park--Roch. JM--Mounds View and they beat Woodbury without thier 2 best players Eddy and Ericson. Since than thev'e been out scored 13-4 by W.B.L and the mighty Rangers of F.L This team has no direction. The wheels are about to come off! You better Stay out of the way..

The problem in hastings is not russ. More then half of the community let themselves get brainwashed into thinking russ was a bad coach and bad person. Everyone loved him when his team was winning but now that they have had a few off years everyone wants to get rid off him. The hastings football team hasnt gotten out of the section in 4 years. I never heard anyone begging Bob Majeski to leave before he retired. The fact of the matter is every program is gonna have ups and downs.

Charlie's mom is a milf !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dear Mr. Bombay, you might know how to teach kids how to shoot the KNUCKLE PUCK, and how to get Charlies mom into your bed, however you know nothing about this communities problem with Mr. Welch. When was the last time Mr. Welch did a thing for the kids in the summer time, when was the last time he went to bat for a kid to get into the Elite programs, he has not because he does not get paid for it. He is Burnt out and needs to step down. By the way is Charlie's mom any good. I used to dream about her!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, I can't believe I have missed this forum topic for this long, didn't see it. But anyways, some of you have no idea what you are talking about and don't have your facts straight.
First of all, Waxlax LOST HIS CAPTAINSHIP the day after he was caught, so everyone quit saying "I can't believe he was a captain. Russ is an idiot." or whatever. As soon as Russ found out what happened he took away his C. The players vote every year for captains, not Russ. 1 of the 2 captains left now has been in trouble before too, but he is a great leader on the ice and in the locker room, so should it be taken away from him for getting in trouble in the past like every other teenager pretty much?
And for this Russ Welch deal...wow. Russ loves the game of hockey and doesn't care just about winning. If he did he would have left after last season and I don't think he would have gotten teary eyed like he did after beating Eagan. Just like someone else said earlier kid/parents have grown up in the program thinking he was this big a-hole and "yeller" and what not. I have played for him before and he is not that bad. He was like any other coach I had. He wanted the best out of us. And for those of you who heard people played junior gold just to not play for Russ, haha that has to be the most ridiculous thing ever. More than likely they knew they wouldnt make varsity and just didn't try out. Either way Russ is not a bad coach, you all can say and think what you want but most people from Hastings who have played for him know the truth, he's a good guy and great coach.

Forgot to mention about the whole summer thing and Russ doing nothing for them in the summer...
Last time I check he got the team into a summer league this past summer and had his assistant coach run it. 2 years ago he had his son Danny Welch run a little mini camp like thing on Sundays to keep the boys in shape during the summer. And the year before that he did the same and so forth, he also ran a 2 week camp in the summer a while back from what I remember.

wow
Wow I just keep finding stupider and stupider comments in here. No affense to you Hastings/Welch haters in here
ALSECORD- You also forgot to add Roseville in that run of win. And EDDY DID PLAY in the game Hastings beat Woodbury. Woodbury did have 1 or 2 guys out but Eddy was not one of them, but eh nice try.
Sorry for my grammar like "stupider" but yea, you get my point

Question for the Hastings guys. Is there something wrong with the school, town, or anything else that has to do with this problem? Until 3-4 years ago Hastings was always a top 5 team in hockey, but also in football, wrestling, and I think their baseball program was very good. Unless i'm mistaken, none of these sports are that great anymore

yep
Wrestling is number 2 in state right now, or they were, not sure any more. And the baseball team went to state last year, I think they got 6th? Not 100% sure though. Basketball has never been really good in Hastings from what I know of, football has been struggling the past 2 years like hockey. Hockey is struggling from all the kids leaving but football is just plain simple not doing so good, things will turn around sooner or later, just a "slump" couple of years for hastings.

Yeah the group of good athletes has graduated. How is a town of 20,000 supposed to be at the top every year? Highs and lows every town and team has them some are farther apart and continue to reload every other year or so.
Also HastingsDangler02 remember to ease up on the baby talk, it turns old ALSECORD on.
Bottem line is fella's and Puck in the Nutz (if your awake and not breastfeeding). Mr. Welch has never been able to coach an average team to the State Tournament. Section 4 back in the late 80's early 90's doesn't count. (worst section in the State, all inner city schools) From what i've been told the group of kids he has now minus a few kids was 4th in the State as Bantam A's. As i went back to the archives, i found they were there with the likes of EDINA-ROSEAU-CENTENNIAL-MOOREHEAD How in the world in 2-3 year's can you fall from one of the top 4-5 teams in the State, to losing 23 games in a row?? It's Coaching.. It's very Simple. This guy has lost control of his team and his program. He has not paid attention to his youth program obviously, as it doesn't look like he's had anyone capable of filling any spots?? Mr. Dangler i can appreciate your Pride in your team and community, but this is simple common sense. If it were my community i would be on the phone to the School board or the A.D . Or is Welch the A.D as well?? I suppose he's The Judge-The Jury and The Executioner. That would explain the cult like atmosphere.. I know they do things a bit differently down there.. If you think this is temporary or your in a little slump, your sadly mistaken. Like i told you last night watch out for flying rubber. Not the frozen variety. The Bus tire variety...

I will agree with you too an extent. Hastings may need a new coach to maybe spark things up in the program, but Welch is not the worst coach out there at the same time. This whole topic/situation is more of a personal thing/opinion so it all comes down to how you feel about the whole thing, specially if you are from Hastings or have played for Russ.

From my view down south I would say that the problems facing Hastings HS stem directly from their youth program. Ten years ago Hastings was the team to beat in D8. Their squirt model had all kids playing in-house and the teams were drafted following their fall hockey camp. It looked like their in-house games were line matched to allow similar skilled players to match up. My understanding was that they put together some tournament teams out of their house program around Christmas time just before final rosters were due. When these kids moved up to peewees they were way ahead of our kids. Even in their Bantam C program they had quality coaches like Matson. Apparently a new wave of parents took over the Hastings board and ditched that successful squirt model (borrowed from some Northern MN program - Grand Rapids?). Whenever I see a Hastings team play youth hockey today their skill levels are way off pace from what they used to be. You can't expect a HS coach to have a superior team if he inherits limited talent from the youth program.
You make some great points, and i agree. But much like pro sports your Head coach needs to be involved in the youth program/minors. From the sounds of it Welch has had nothing to do with the youth since his own children left. From what i understand that is alot of the frustration. He's burnt out and just waiting out the last few year's so he can get an extra 100.00 a month on his coahing/teaching pension.

Last time I checked Hastings still has the In-House module and from what I have heard it is better than before since they do not have to match up lines they just play. The balance of players is better so more kids actually have quality touches with the puck. I think they way to get better is to have the puck on your stick a lot. With all the new summer stuff their where kids that just developed faster and they where taking over the In-houser league. I am not sure if that is good or bad, but having 1 traveling team is not the problem in Hastings. As for Coach Welch I do not know him well enough to have any comments.Rocket78 wrote:From my view down south I would say that the problems facing Hastings HS stem directly from their youth program.
