U.S. Under-17 Select Team
Tops Switzerland, 6-1, at Under-17 Five Nations Tournament

Team USA Improves to 3-0-0-0 at Tournament

STRAKONICE, Czech Republic. – Steven Whitney (Reading, Mass.) tallied two goals to lead the U.S. Under-17 Select Team to a 6-1 victory over Switzerland here today. With the win, Team USA improved to 3-0-0-0 and will play for first place on Friday (Aug. 24) against the Czech Republic.

“It was a very good win for us tonight,” said Jon Cooper (St. Louis, Mo.), head coach of Team USA. “We started out slow, but the guys really got it going in the second period. As long as we play our game, we’re as good as any team here.”

Nick Leddy (Eden Prairie, Minn.) tipped Brad Walch’s (Saginaw, Mich.) shot from the blue line past goaltender Remo Trub at 18:04 for the only goal of the opening stanza.

With a two man-advantage in the second period, Whitney doubled Team USA’s lead when he tapped Kyle Beattie’s (Avondale, Ariz.) pass into the Switzerland net at 6:43. Three minutes later, Ryan Walters (Rosemount, Minn.) fired a wrist shot over the glove of Trub for his fourth goal of the tournament. Leddy sent a pass to Zach Budish (Edina, Minn.) who slid it into the net at 16:31 to give Team USA a 4-0 advantage after 40 minutes.

Switzerland tallied its first goal of the game just 1:52 into the final frame to make it 4-1. Kit Sitterley (Mooresvill, N.C.) increased the lead to 5-1 when he tapped home a rebound at 12:11 with Team USA on the power play. Late in the period, Whitney beat a Swiss defenseman, skated in alone and sent a wrist shot past Trub to account for the 6-1 final.

Minnesota lads continue to do well. Most importantly, the team is winning. Maybe take home the gold?

I am guessing that an ankle break is more than a six to eight week thing??? Hopefully I am wrong.

My follow up is that it was a broken ankle also. I was only guessing on 3 months to heal. But no football.

Team USA Falls to Host Czech Republic, 7-2, in Tournament Finale

STRAKONICE, Czech Republic – Despite Steven Whitney’s (Reading, Mass.) team-leading fourth goal of the tournament, the U.S. Under-17 Select Team fell to host Czech Republic, 7-2, here today in the finale of the 2007 Under-17 Five Nations Tournament. Team USA finished the tournament in second place with a 3-1-0-0 record.

“Obviously it was unfortunate to lose tonight, but we had a great tournament,” said Jon Cooper, head coach of Team USA. “The most rewarding thing was that we definitely got better every game and the players progressed throughout the course of the tournament. I’m very proud of our team.”

The Czechs struck early in the first stanza when Lukas Kapec notched a power-play goal at the 3:33 mark. Later in the period, Antonin Honejsek increased the Czech Republic’s lead with a wrist shot that beat U.S. netminder Matthew Skoff (McKees Rock, Pa.) at 19:24.

Michal Hlinka took a pass from across the crease and tapped it past Skoff at 3:44 of the middle frame to make it 3-0. One minute later, Whitney took Kyle Beattie’s (Avondale, Ariz.) pass, deked Czech goaltender Philip Novotny and slid the puck into the empty net to cut the deficit to 3-1. The Czechs scored once again at 9:10 to take back the two-goal advantage.

In the final period, after the Czech Republic made it 5-1, Josh Birkholz (Maple Grove, Minn.) one-timed a pass from Brad Walch (Saginaw, Mich.) past Novotny to make it a 5-2 score. Honejsek tallied twice more to account for the 7-2 final score.

Skoff and Brandon Maxwell (Winter Park, Fla.) combined for 30 saves in the losing effort.
