Hockey Tryouts for Fall Sports Participants
Does anyone know the MSHSL rules surrounding the overlap in seasons? The girls that play in the soccer state tournament championship game will not be done with their fall sport until Thursday. Most tryouts are over by that time.

In my program the sport that is finishing up is more important that the one that is just starting. Ideally a player would be able to skate enough of the tryout though to justify a team placement/cut/selection/etc.
Our Tennis team just finished up at big school state, so that wasn't a problem. I was worried about our soccer team, but they were upset in the section semis and would have had to get through perennial power Mahtomedi even then... I have my first VB/Hockey girl this year, but I don't think there are any issues there for us... Swimming is the sport that is the worst with overlap. I'll potentially have girls swimming at state almost until Dec 1 it seems! At a class A school you have more multi-sport athletes I believe, so maybe I have more of an issue with this than the big school more common 1- sport specialist situations...

overlapping seniors
There are no MSHSL rules regarding this. The rules are up to each school and each coach. If I were a volleyball coach getting ready for section semifinals this week, I wouldn't want any of my players anywhere near a hockey rink until my team was eliminated. I think most hockey coaches understand this and would make accomodations. Treat the athlete the same way you would a player who was injured and unable to take part in tryouts, once their fall season is done, let them try out at that time. And if a coach had a problem with this, it would be up to the school's administration to set him or her straight.
