Anybody coming to the Muskie tryouts in June?
the_official_hockeyboy@hotmial.com

Re: Sioux City
Every USHL team has 30 players on their protected list, they need to cut 7, tell me why anyone would go to their tryouts!!

no gaurantees
most teams have 'bubble' players they need to evaluate, like 10 of them, and usually 1 or 2 players are invited out of tryouts who are not protected to attend their camp (because you really need about 15 skaters and 4 goalies for the 'cut' camp). Also, On the other hand, if you are in the top 5-10 on the ice, there are several GM's who will 'farm' you to a NAHL or other league as a 'farm club' sort of thing, or you get in their heads for next year.

But you are right... it's relatively expensive ice time for very little benefit. Set your expectations accordingly.

Re: no guarantees
Raider42, you sound like someone were not interested in. Cant make the team if you dont show up. Keep in mind that 4 of the 30 were picked to be secured for the following season. In the past Sioux City had other teams present at tryouts and have signed players from our camp. We had a thirty man roster last year and 3 players made the team and one of those ended up turning us down for the NTDP. If you have the talent its worth a shot.
the_official_hockeyboy@hotmial.com

Re: no guarantees
HockeyBoy,

now tell me truthfully (if you are in the muskie fold, if you're not, please declare you're just a fan, with only 'rube equity'). Of the 3 that 'made it' last year, how many answered, the 'dear prospective player' mailing, and how many had a personal invitation to attend the tryout?

I've seen a lot of 'Dear Player' letters... where the coach didn't even know who the kid was when they showed up for the tryout, and where there were 5-10 kids being actively coached (placed on lines together, lines matched up, etc etc), and the other 40 kids being grist for the mill.

I've done a little bit of analysis (see last and prior years threads), and tryouts are actually a pretty good revenue stream for a team. you get 50,000 (40*120) revenue for a weeks worth of ice (maybe 1K a day)... a 5 day tryout = 40+K in revenue, definitely enough to pay for the 'evaluators' time'.

Just my observations, YMMV.

Re: no guarantees
40*120 = 5,000. Not arguing with this or any previous post, Bud. The math was just off.

so much for my college degree
yep. I made a $300,000 addition mistake at work today too.

Time to flip burgers.

I'm just a common fan and I truley beleive nobody is invited to our camp that dosent have a chance to make the team this year or the following year depending upon your age.
the_official_hockeyboy@hotmial.com

tryouts
Hockeyboy, I do not care if care for me or not, but you really don't know much about the tryout process. With a 30 man protected list, even if 3 or 4 were drafted for the following year, you still need to cut 3 or 4 to get to the 23 man roster, you do the math. I do not disagree if your a phenom and fell through the cracks you could make the team, but most coach's are not going to cut someone they scouted, recruited and drafted.

Tryouts
Obviously it is a fund raiser for the teams, however those drafted are not guaranteed a spot on the team either. The following either were not protected by the team that drafted them or ended up in a different league from last years draft. Some were even highly drafted.

2. Sioux Falls -- Chris Anderson, D, White Bear Lake d
33. Sioux City -- Tim Manthey, D/F, Anoka d
97. Topeka -- Eric Dahlberg, D, Duluth East d
105. Tryouts
One thing to remember though is last year they had tenders, this year the do not so there are about another 48 kids that were drafted this year that might have been tenders. If I recall from a thread last year, I think Petey mentioned it, that maybe the top 1/2 drafted have legit shots. Last year that was around 80. If the scouts did their homework then, a kid drafted 80 this year should have a lot better shot at making the team than a kid drafted last year at 80. Add in the tenders not signed and that halfway point is closer to 128.

Fundraisers
The USHL teams are for the most part taking a look at everyone in their camps. Many of the players are under age players that they are evaluating for the future not necessarily the upcoming season. They can only get out and evaluate so much and watching a kid play AAA midget or high school is alot different than watching him play with other players of similar or better talent.

That said, watch out for the NAHL tryout camps, those are moneymakers. If you haven't been tendered or drafted by the team, the chances are you are just helping pay for the camp.
