how about a fresh look

Post by Brett11 »

It would be great this year for the evaluators to take a "fresh" look at all of the girls, especially the older groups. The best high school players today were not necessarily the best 2 or 3 years ago.

There have been too many stories in the past about girls making the teams who either didn't try out or were cut in earlier rounds, or added later because their parents made a stink after the teams were picked.

Some of the older girls feel it is pointless to try out for the final team if they haven't gone to Lake Placid in the past.

I agree that the best changes from year to year. Also changes based on what age groups are put together, etc.

Part of the problem also is:

#1 - Only Ben Smith has the capability to "fix" things with at large selections for Lake Placid after Phase 1 has already completed. To my knowledge no parent has ever been able to get their kid picked through complaint.

#2 - I think that the reason that kids feel they will never get a shot after the first couple years is that they don't realize that the number of kids that we get to send GOES DOWN each year! (meaning less 17/18's vs. 15/16's typically unless the "at large" picks bring us up in the older group) So, if you don't make it those first couple years, you likely won't in the future unless you bypass some talent wise.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p100.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... ckeyfan at: 3/23/06 10:57 am

No Phase 1 rosters, but I don't think they make these public either?

I'm not sure about rosters either. I think the kids are contacted through mail after coaches nomination.

I do know Moose Lake's goalie Rachel Borchardt (so.) will be there this weekend for phase 1.
www.rebelhockey.com

interest down?

Post by SEhockeyDAD »

Don't know if its an indication of waining interest or not, but my daughter got a call just a couple days ago if she'd like to go to phase 1 because of a dropout. (She can't; family vacation.) I can't be positive, but I'm not sure how high on the list she was. I'd like to think it was a compliment to get the call, but I'd guess she wasn't the first.

I think that this conflicts with spring break/trips for some and that leads to some kids not being able to participate unfortunately.

I've heard some rumors about who has and hasn't been invited based on the voting and I'm waiting to see who actually is at the tryouts, but even then you can't be certain that a kid didn't just decline vs. not being asked, etc.

I assume that they go down the list in order of votes after the initial invitations are declined. So, it is an honor to be asked at all I believe.

tryouts

Post by Brett11 »

Last year they told girls who missed even one session that they would not advance to the next level. There were girls who missed who did advance. I am not complaining about those who did advance, as they probably deserved it, but the rule was not enforced for all. This is a very tough time for these girls to make all of the tryouts as many are on Spring Break. Unrealistic policies should not be set then not followed.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p100.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... Brett11 at: 3/24/06 1:33 pm

To my knowledge we enforced that rule in the East.

What happens with injuries???

A girl from the North separated her shoulder last week in the Gopher State Festival and is out for 4 weeks.

She made it past the first round last year. She'll be ready for phase 2 this year. What happens to kids like that.

I'm uncertain, but it could be that she won't advance? I beleive there are a couple P2 kids from last year that didn't even get an invite to P1, but that's rumor at this point in time.

I think that there is some confusion between "at Large" choices and players that missed prior rounds. There was one "at large" choice that didn't make it to Phase 2 but did go to Lake Placid. This is highly unusual though.

Phase I St Cloud

Post by maroonhockey »

Up in St. Cloud, the girls look good, much better skating skills this year than in the past couple years. Certain standouts are:
Windmeier
Buganski
Kobow
Leblanc
Rasmussen
Beese
Knop
Zebro
Nixon

Amazing level of play in the East at both levels. I can't speak about specific players, but in general I was really impressed. This really showcases the top talent and shows how much the girls game has improved.

Selection after a Decline?

Post by ice princess »

GHS - Can you clear this up? There was talk and confussion at the tryout last night among some parents regarding "stand-out" players that weren't invited. Someone said that if a kid was invited last year and declined she would not be eligible the next year. I find that hard to believe but is there any truth to that? Thanks.

Re: Selection after a Decline?

No truth to that rumor. What may be happening is that a standout 87 senior that declined to participate last year is no longer eligible as 87's are no longer eligible due to their birth year (88/89 is the older group).

Re: a standout that didn't come last year and is still eligible, there is at least one that is there this year that wasn't last year, so that kind of wrecks that theory altogether.

One thing that also may be hapening is that some 89's from last year may have been bumped due to getting paired with an amazing 88 class this year. I expect that we may see some 89's from last year not make it this year, but come back into this next year when they are no longer with the 88's and instead paired again with the 90's (as they were last year).

Of course, we may also see individual birth year groups eventually I hope, and we also can't forget that some kids decline to participate (even the best) for various reasons - illness/injury/spring break/family issues/spring sports/just want a break/etc. I think some kids burn out too..

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p100.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... ckeyfan at: 3/25/06 1:50 pm

Central Tryouts

Post by Random1727 »

After watching the scimmage this morning for the 17/18's, I think the evaluaters are going to have a hard time figuring out who to send to phase two with goalies... Chances are Nixon will go, but who the other one will be, it's a tough choice between Tenney and Kassa. Tenney has looked good, and Kassa's play has improved through the tryouts. Tough choice, tough choice. That's just my opinion.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p100.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... dom1727 at: 3/25/06 2:12 pm

How many 17/18 goalies are there in central? Others than those named?

There are four with the 17/18's... Nixon, Kassa, Tenney, and Brezschanko (I just butchered that name I'm sure.) from Coon.

There are 6 with the 15/16's.

Tryouts

Post by girlshockey »

USA Hockey has finally come to their senses and will be running one year development camps for the girls program. Depending on the amount of bed space they can secure at either Lake Placid or Rochester, New York, the plan looks like it will take effect in the summer of 2007, but may be lowered to six teams instead of eight teams. Girls will no longer have to tryout in two year age categories and everyone will be able to track players from each age classification to see trends in skill levels for the single year age groups. This is a win-win for Minnesota since we send the largest number of players to the USA Hockey Development Camps. The age groups will probably be 15, 16 and 17 with the 18 year old possibly participating at the August camp where the under 22 team and National Team players participate. They have not worked out all the particulars yet, but the players should be made aware of this so that they come and try out even if they have not made the process in the past, there will be more chances in the future.

How did the regions look this weekend? Any standouts? I've already gave my input about the Central Region. It will be interesting to see how the rosters turn out!
