Cloquet-Esko-Carlton Hockey No More?

Post by BSUBeaver »

With Wrenshall and Carlton slated to consolidate districts, it appears Cloquet is near ending the coop agreement. At first, I thought this may be just a mere formality as the agreement was between Cloquet and Carlton, but doing a little more reading, it appears Cloquet's Board doesn't have much interest in an updated agreement with Carlton/Wrenshall.

Cloquet, from the outside looking in, looks to be somewhat a mess right now. The girls hockey coach resigns over attacks from parents. The board also turned down a candidate for the girls basketball position, someone that, looking at the newspaper article, the board chair may have a personal conflict with. The interview committee for the position had recommended her, twice, I believe. And then you have the possible ending of the agreement for hockey and soccer with Carlton, and not entering into a new agreement with Carlton/Wrenshall.

As far as boys hockey goes, Cloquet appears to be in great shape. They won the PWA title in 25, took 2nd this year, and have lots of talent at squirts. I can't imagine a lot of their talent comes from the Carlton district, but who knows? Carlton/Wrenshall wont have a hockey team, so i imagine Carlton players could still play at Cloquet without transferring, correct?

Cloquet may drop off a bit this year, but when those youth players start arriving next year, the Jacks will be positioned for a years-long run as an elite team in Class A.

Reading the article in the Pine Journal (Forum News pay wall), it looks like that the Cloquet board wants students to open enroll in to play soccer/hockey. The article said that 14 Carlton students took advantage of the hockey and soccer coop. From the article:

"Last season, there were 14 Carlton students that participated across all the cooperative teams between the districts and Cloquet billed Carlton for $22,000 to offset the cost, Riess told the board.

“If we’re looking at it financially, we’ve had lots of people ask us what’s going to happen,” he said. “We didn’t have the answer regarding this co-op and a lot of them have preemptively expressed interest in open-enrolling their students to Cloquet to participate. I think financially you’d be $50,000 to the net positive.”

Tommy Jacobson, a coach and board member at the Carlton Youth Hockey Association, was upset that his kids — who attend Wrenshall — were reduced to a financial concern for Cloquet.

“The sales pitch of revenue getting generated from children like mine attending your school adds to the insult,” he said. “I promise you, if this goes through — my children will never attend your school. I hope you take that into consideration.”

Carlton School Board chair Laura Nilsen also attended the meeting and also said the Cloquet board’s actions were insulting to the Carlton and Wrenshall communities."
