2024-25 Section 1A
2024-25 Section 1A Preseason Preview
There appears to be a new “King of the South” in Section 1A Hockey. This past season Northfield again had a very good year and they went unbeaten in section play to become the defending Section 1A champion and looking at things on paper coming into this year they appear to be the favorite to pull off a 3-peat this year. There will be challengers though as a young group from Waseca returns nearly everyone from a 15 win team looking to take the next step and contend. Also, Dodge County again will have some top end vaunted scoring back to continue their success in recent years, and you can never count out the historically tough Southern Class 1A Programs Albert Lea & Rochester Lourdes who both look to return some very good talent of their own. While it’s the Raiders section to lose again this winter there do appear to be some teams ready to step up and challenge their supremacy within Section 1A this winter.

3- Dodge County Wildcats
4- Albert Lea Tigers
5- Rochester Lourdes Eagles
6- Winona Winhawks
7- La Crescent-Hokah Lancers
8- Austin Packers

1- Northfield Raiders
Head Coach- Mike Luckraft 11th year, (185-76-11)
Last Year's Record and Finish: (23-6-2) Section 1A Champion and took 6th place in Class A
Raiders Outlook- Northfield is building a Southern Minnesota juggernaut program recently within Class A’s Section 1A. They will be looking to three-peat in the southern section and head back to State this year. When this group of Raiders were Seniors and Juniors were bantams they took 3rd place at State in 2022. While that group did lose a few elite pieces to transfers, there is plenty of reason for optimism as they bring good experience and production back at all three phases. At forward they return five players who saw major ice time, Seniors Will Cashin & Griffin Kennelly both return after scoring double digit goals last year and Juniors Michael Steward, Oliver Benjamin & Christian Whiteman each had double digit points in their 1st year of varsity and those five returning forwards combined for 107 varsity points on the top 3 lines last year to give them a great core to build around. Also, look for Juniors Charlie Becker & Henry Webber who played some varsity last year to contribute more this year, and look for Sophomores Jacob Peters & Brody Jenson and 9th grader Miles Kennelly, who are coming up from the Bantam program, to push for playing time and add to what should be a deep offense. On defense they return four of their top 6 defensemen from last season. Junior Bridger Riley & Sophomore Ben Geiger are back after each having huge years, both having over 20 points from the blueline as youngsters, and Juniors Ashton Pumper & Carter Simon are back a year older after playing varsity to give them a good experienced defensive core. Add to that experienced unit that Senior Max Frank is back in net after winning the starting job down the stretch last year and he has plenty of big game experience and this is a Northfield team that looks to be very dangerous again this winter, while they did graduate some elite top end talent, this team looks very deep again and should be very good and will be tough for anyone in Southern Minnesota to knock off.
2- Waseca Bluejays
Head Coach- Chris Storey 12th year, (116-142-5)
Last Year's Record and Finish: (15-12-0) Lost in Section 1A Quarterfinals
Bluejays Outlook- Looking for this year’s version of La Crescent, a Class A team from the south that you probably haven't heard of much before that is poised for a huge year, look no further than Waseca. The crazy thing about this year’s Bluejays team is that they are still probably a year away from really being a true contender for State, but look for this team to make a big jump in Section 1A and win over 20 games and have a chance to be playing in their program’s first ever Section Final this winter. Why all the optimism well to start with the fact that this team returns 18 letterwinners and a ridiculous 95% of its scoring as they will be led by their two Seniors Brayden Hesch-Priebe & Hunter Anderson, who both had 20 plus goal seasons last year. Beyond them though is a juggernaut of elite youngsters as Sophomores Griffin Storey, Henry Huttemier, Cash Lynch & Otto Schoenrock all return having 20 plus points as 9th graders last winter and add to them Juniors Jude Gehring & Jayden Gehring are both back after each putting up 14 plus goals as 10th graders. On defense they return Sophomore Beckett Srp and Seniors Lucas Groll, Easton Danks & Jackson Tesch and Junior Jackson Dahl who all played big varsity minutes last year on the blueline and will be a year older and more experienced this season. In the net they return Senior Carter Martens and Sophomore Josiah Schmidtke who split the net last season and the youngster Schmidtke is one of the best young elite goaltenders in all of Southern Minnesota. Looking at this year’s Bluejays roster it shows that they are loaded with experience and talent in all three phases and if they stay healthy they should be a team to watch this season to make noise as well as for the next few years down south.
3- Dodge County Wildcats
Head Coach- Andrew & Bryce Wilcox 3rd Year, (35-18-1)
Last Year's Record and Finish: (19-8-1) Lost in Section 1A Championship Game
Wildcats Outlook- Dodge County is coming off of a very impressive year where they won 19 games and went to the Section 1A Final and came up just short vs Northfield. Now they will look to reload as while they were hit hard by graduation, losing one of the states top forwards in Class A and their standout goalie, they do still bring back some good pieces to be a threat again this year. Up front they hope to make a new dangerous scoring duo out of Seniors Brett Ludvigsen, who had nearly 80 points last year, & Dylan Klomps who returns with double digit goals. They will need to build new depth as Junior Gabe Coshenet returns with nearly 20 points but they will need a bunch of new faces after that to step in after that like Juniors Cooper Beebee & Isaiah Holtermann who return with some varsity experience. On defense top defender Junior Jeremiah Peterson-Gordon is back after a 20 plus point campaign and Senior Griffin Gibbs & Junior Dylan Allen are back with varsity experience as well but again depth will be needed on the blueline. Sophomores Liam Huso. Levi Apel & Braylon Fredrickson could all be candidates to step in to help with depth at both positions coming in from the youth level. In net they will need a new goalie and Senior Max Lulf would appear to be the top candidate having got very limited action last year. There is still a nice core of talent back and if Dodge County can find the needed depth pieces they again could be a main contender in Section 1A this winter.
4- Albert Lea Tigers
Head Coach- Matt Erickson, 4th year, (52-28-2)
Last Year's Record and Finish: (14-12-1) Lost in Section 1A Semifinals
Tigers Outlook- Albert Lea again found their way back into the Top Four of Section 1A, where they normally find themselves at season’s end, after a terribly slow start to last year. The Tigers rebounded well and lots of young players, who will return this season, and had a strong second half that allowed them to earn home ice for the Quarterfinal round and after a dramatic overtime win they returned to Rochester Rec Center for the 1A Semis like normal. They were hit by graduation again this offseason but they do return enough pieces to be contenders again as normal. At forward the team's leading scorer is back in Senior Connor Pirsig, who had 18 goals, and he along with Junior Jacob Kolker return to lead the offense. They will need to find scoring depth help and will look to players like Senior Sam Stay & Archie Nelson and Junior Brock Scott & Tyler Balfe to improve this year after getting varsity action last year. They also have Sophomore Drake Sternhagen coming up from bantams who will add to the offense immediately. The true strength of Albert Lea though will be on the back end. On the blueline they return the majority of their D-core as big framed Senior Bryant Johnston is back and Juniors Zaden Brua, who had 20 plus points last year, and Dominic Mendez & Evan Anfinson all return with experience. In net they return Senior Ledger Stadheim who was good last year as their starter down the stretch. If the Tigers can find some depth and production beyond their top end group they have enough veterans returning who will defend well and play a physical style that is tough to play against which should allow them to build another contender this winter.
5- Rochester Lourdes Eagles
Head Coach- Jeff True, 5th year, 40-31-1
Last Year's Record and Finish: (9-17-0) Lost in Section 1A Quarterfinals
Eagles Outlook- Rochester Lourdes continues to build back up their program as they try to get back their standards of the early 2000’s glory years when they were a regular at state and annual Class A contender. This season they could be a sneaky pick to really contend in Section 1A looking at what they return and are bringing up from the youth program to build a solid team around. Offensively, they bring back a nice core that made up over 40% of their production last year as Seniors Jack Roe & Colton Rich are back with loads of experience and scoring touch. Add to them Juniors Dominic Troutman, Jack Phillps, Landon Spicer & Owen Hoehn along with Sophomores Alex Monosmith, Jaxon Keefe & Nolan Dubois and there is plenty of young talent to the returning and that will be added to the lineup for offensive depth. On defense Juniors Vinny Harens, who had nearly 20 points last year, Owen Barclay, Sam Kleinschmidt & Easton Gasner all return with varsity experience under their belt and add to them Sophomores Charlie Kor, Clavin Phillips & Gavin Groettum who are ready to contribute and play and there is plenty there to build a very good defensive unit. In net Junior Anton Ackley appears to be ready to step in after looking good while splitting time last year and improving tremendously as the year went on. Again, looking at all the Lourdes brings back and the nice crop of youngsters they will be infusing, there's a lot to be excited about with this program.
6- Winona Winhawks
Head Coach- Marty Raymond 3rd year, (27-33-3)
Last Year's Record and Finish: (16-8-1) Lost in Section 1A Quarterfinals
Winhawks Outlook- Winona will try to build off of last year's successful season where they won 16 games and came up just short of reaching the Semifinals for the first time in many years. However, this team was hit hard by graduation in the offseason and they will have a lot of holes to fill as they go through a rebuild this winter. At forward the Winhawks still have a star in Senior Aven Prodzinski who is back with double digit goals and over 50 points last year. Beyond him they will need to build depth but look for Seniors Trystan Hagen, Patrick Curtin & Elliot Bennick along with Junior Jacob Lange to build off their varsity experience from last year. They will also look for Sophomore Kaden Grass who is coming up from the bantams to step in and contribute immediately. On defense Juniors Paxton Raymond & Myles Bruemmer return on the blueline with good experience to lead the backend unit and they are hopeful that Sophomores Alex Suffrins & Gavin Charles will be able to come up from the youth program to help build a deeper D-core around. They will need a new goalie but Senior Damon Noland did get some experience at the beginning of last year and they will look for him to grow off that and be a leader from the net. Overall they will need their top end to be very good but there are enough pieces returning for Winona to be the best of the rest in Section 1A as they look to build off their good season from last winter.
7- La Crescent-Hokah Lancers
Head Coach- Eriah Hayes 6th year, (62-43-3)
Last Year's Record and Finish: (24-3-0) Lost in Section 1A Semifinals
Lancers Outlook- La Crescent-Hokah is coming off the best season in school history that saw them win a school record 24 games and advance to the Section Semifinals for the only the second time in program history. Moving into this season there appears to be a significant rebuild on the horizon as they graduated a large Senior class. They will return a few pieces to build around though this as Seniors Ethan Myhre & Alex Von Arx return up front both coming off productive double digit point campaigns last year and they will also look for Juniors Cooper Hill & Asher Voves to grow more in expanded varsity roles to build their new look offense around. On defense Senior Mitch Reining & Junior Drew Peters are back with some good experience and can also play on the offensive end if needed. In the net they return their goaltender Junior Charlie Wieser who was their starter by the end of last season for experience in net. The Lancers will look to build new depth as well and they need that if they want to try to sustain success from last year's record breaking year. By seasons end their is more enough here to build another good team around for Coach Hayes to have another good season this winter.
8- Austin Packers
Head Coach- Troy Schaefer 4th year, (9-63-1)
Last Year's Record and Finish: (4-22-0) Lost in Section 1A Play-In Game
Packers Outlook- Austin has gone through some really tough years recently and last year things appeared to be heading in a positive direction when they got off to a (3-0-0) start but a (1-22-0) finish was yet another painful season. There is optimism though that this year is going to be different. The Packers return 98% of their scoring from last year and a large Senior class is back with a wealth of varsity experience which should point to an improved season upcoming. At forward Seniors Grady Carney, Gahvin Schaefer & Gavin Brekke are back as the three of the top 4 leading scorers along with Juniors Isaac Anderson & Elijah Krueger to make up a nice core of returning forwards and look for them to bring up 9th grader Talan Hall from the youth to help add that offense as he is a gifted player. On defense Senior Cody Pedersen & Junior Kyler Flanders are back along with an experienced blueline. In net Senior Daran Plunkett is back for his third year in net and there is varsity experience everywhere in this lineup. Add in a group of A Bantams coming in and the youth numbers looking better and Austin could be regaining some competitiveness in the coming years and this should be a much improved this year.
9- Red Wing Wingers
Head Coach- Tony Casci 7th year, (34-108-70
Last Year's Record and Finish: (5-20-1) Lost in Section 1A Play-In Game
Wingers Outlook- Red Wing was once considered a Class A blueblood program back in the late 90’s and early 2000’s when they were a Tourney regular and made multiple Class A Title Games and have the only Class A Title from the South. However, those glory days are long gone now and this team has struggled winning games in recent years. Looking at this year Red Wing should be improved as they do have a large chunk of their roster returning to try and dig out of the bottom of Section 1A. Up front Junior Ethan Anderson and Seniors Carson Frank & Charlie Peterson are back as the team's 2nd, 4th & 5th leading scorers but combined they only scored 14 goals for a team that struggled to find offense and the hope is that each year older each player will have a better season this winter. Defensively they return their main core of Seniors Tanner Jarmuz & Anthony Zlatin, Junior Marcus Finholdt and Sophomore Marshall Turner for experience on the blueline which will be needed as they will be breaking in a new goalie this winter which will be big question mark to have answered for this team to have a chance to make to make improvements and move up the Section 1A ladder this winter.
10- Faribault Falcons
Head Coach- Jake Dickison 1st year, (0-0-0)
Last Year's Record and Finish: (10-16-0) Lost in Section 1A Quarterfinals
Falcons Outlook- Faribault had a rough season last year as they had a large Senior class last year that just never seemed to be able to get their season on track. Losing their coaches midseason did not make things any easier and now they enter into what looks like on paper a rebuilding year with a new head coach this winter. Up front they do return their 2nd leading scorer in Junior Tommy Kunze who had double digit goals and nearly 30 points last winter. After that though much of their scoring depth graduated they will need growth from players like Senior Nick Archambault & Junior RJ Wasilowski and a bunch of new faces to carry the load. On defense they return Senior Cole Goodwin & Junior Leighton Anderson for some varsity experience but again much of their minutes there gradured as well. They do return goalie Senior Dustin Boyd net but more than likely it looks like this year will more than likely be a rebuilding project with a new coach this winter in Faribault.
There appears to be a new “King of the South” in Section 1A Hockey. This past season Northfield again had a very good year and they went unbeaten in section play to become the defending Section 1A champion and looking at things on paper coming into this year they appear to be the favorite to pull off a 3-peat this year.
