Randolph

Post by Upfan111 »

According to the Duluth News Tribune this afternoon - Duluth police sought, obtained school district’s investigation of former East hockey coach.
A search warrant approved in December could mean a report detailing investigators’ findings about longtime coach Mike Randolph becomes public.

First 2 paragraphs of the article are:

DULUTH — Police requested and received from Duluth Public Schools a copy of an investigation regarding former East High School hockey coach Mike Randolph as part of a probe into a booster club at the school.

Ryan Temple, an investigator at the Duluth Police Department’s financial crimes unit, sent a warrant to school district staff in late December asking for a May 24, 2021, investigative report completed by the Terch & Associates consulting firm. The warrant stems from a June police report made by a former East parent who, according to the application for that warrant, alleged that he may have been defrauded out of approximately $6,000 by the East End Hockey Booster Club.

I have a feeling that the investigation being made public may not paint Randolph in a very flattering light, hence why he resigned. Right or wrong, that generation of coaching style is no longer compatible with the current generation of players or parents (with the exception of a place like STA).

Parent says he may have been defrauded. Translation. I donated a lot of money to the booster club and my kid didn’t make varsity.

Booster clubs used to serve a purpose. They need to go away. Unless their purpose is solely in buying equipment and reducing the “pay for play” that is common in most schools. Mine charges ~$500 to play a sport and nearly all that goes to the districts general fund, not the athletic department.

It is hard, but more coaches and the weak MSHSL need to stand up to the schools and school districts. Minnesota’s once leading the nation in participation rates are falling. If it wasn’t for track and cross country it would be in a tailspin.

Coaches are in a no win situation many times. There are number of coaches in many sports who should be under IRS audit for unclaimed income. Including a number of my own kids coaches…… simple math….. cost of off season practice terms x number of kids - cost of ice time ended up +$20,000. And that was 15+ years ago. Marginal kids, kids who played Legion ball, were all screwed if they didn’t pay.
