7AA

Post by gr19 »

Hello hockey fans! I'd like to hear from some people who have watched the 7AA kids in fall leagues and who has impressed you. Who should be a favorite and who is a darkhorse? Seems to me 7AA is a mess every year, I would bet this year will possibly be the most controversial when it comes to the pairings meeting in February. I think CEC, East, Elk River, and Grand Rapids will be in the semi's this year. I hope CEC plays Elk River in the semi's. I would love to see an offensive team like ER battle the best goalie in the state, Reid Ellingson.

It seems to me that the word "offensive" could be inerpretted more than one way. Your making an assumption here Empire and might want to clarify things.

I'm assuming he means a team that relies on offense and has a lot of firepower. Isn't that the standard definition of offensive team?
Elk River AA State Champions- 2001 Boys & 2004 Girls

GR19:

That match up would be fun to watch. Do you truly believe that Reid Ellington is the best goalie in the State of Hockey? I have heard a lot about him, however upon seeing his performance in Selects and the Elite League I has been suspect! In judging HS goalies, save %, quality of shots and consistency is what to look for in judging a net minder! Size is also a big plus!

Regards,
mnhockey39

I'm not gonna say that he's the absolute best since I didn't get to as many games as I wanted to last year, but he is a very good goalie and very good under pressure.

I saw a boatload of games last year, and this kid is the best I've seen on a consistant basis. I assure you he IS the real deal and he would have my vote for the best in the state hands down.

Last year, as a Sophomore: 19-6-1 with a ~2.1 GAA. Posted a .944 Save% and a 1.3 GAA in the section playoffs. He allowed two or less goals in 17 games, while recording 3 shutouts. He allowed more than 3 goals only twice -- and it wasn't uncommon for his team to be outshot by thier opponents.

CEC was rarely outshot by their opponents last year. As far as Ellingson being the best goalie in the state, you guys can argue that one. I will say he works hard at his position. I don't know that he, by himself, won any games for CEC last year although he played a very important part in their success. I thought he was very consistent last year. In order for CEC to compete in 7AA and the state this year he needs to become a real shutdown goalie. I hope it happens.

Elliott:

Your selections have merit, however I believe that Andover may surprise a few versus the bottom of the barrel. I have heard that they only lost 1 player this summer (N. Nagle?) to Totino Grace and the balance of a strong group of sophomores and juniors stayed home instead of transferring. Since its hockey program inception, the Huskies have lost D. Green to the Owls as a junior, B. Peterson (currently playing Elite League I and a top point leader) to the elks as a sophomore, B. Martell (currently playing Elite League I and a top point leader for defenseman) as a sophomore to the elks, C. Dahl (currently playing in Elite League I) transferred to Mounds View as a sophomore, N. Kellogg (currently playing Elite League II and posted a .931 save % and GAA of 0.80 at Model Camp according to a thread posted several months ago) as a freshman to Totino Grace (NK is back at Andover for his junior and senior year), A & M Shibrowski (A.S. currently playing in Elite league II) to BSM, and R. Craft to Totino Grace. From what I hear, the bleeding has stopped this year and they even have a new HS Varsity coach by the name of Bill Thorson (? spelling).

ER or DE? Flip the coin, as it is a toss up! Both ER and DE have junior goalies with minimal varsity time that must step up. My prediction is the elks with the Sars factor!

Regards,
mnhockey39

The only thing I knew about Andover is that they continually lose kids.

Perhaps the only hting I like about DE coach Randolph is that he teaches the most important hockey development skill. He teaches how to win. So Randolph against Sarsland should be a good match-up. But if Cloquet has a couple of kids step it up a bit they will be int he mix because I believe they have one of the best coaches in the state and a very good goalie to work out from (plus some veterens that learned a lot last year and have something to prove).

Brainerd has some key ingredients that can make them a threat, as does Grand Rapids. With GR I just have not been impressed with the way they progress through the year and the talent gets used. And I really was impressed with some younger kids and the coaches at FL last year during the post season.

Even if I am entirely wrong 7AA will be fun to watch.
