I don't recall verbal commitments getting so much press from teams, etc. in the recent past.
Usually that was reserved for actual signed commitments, since verbals really don't mean much.

Social media makes a difference, too.
Kids have always done it, I just don't recall the actual teams/leagues, etc. making such a big deal out of verbals until the last few years.
Seemed it used to be when a commit was announced by the above it was due to an actual signing.
But then, the last ten or so years have gone by very fast !
