Saturday night, I was announcing a hockey tournament at the Schwan's Super Rink and one of the songs I recognized when I played music over the PA system was the same song I remember from when WTCN-TV carried the state hockey tournament. The song was titled "Hoedown" by Emerson, Lake and Palmer. Anyone remember that particular theme?
Here's a link to the song.

Whoa! What a blast from the past!
The hockey tournament came on my radar in 1974, possibly '73. And I very much recall this music from then. It wasn't until several years later I realized it was a "regular" tune.
"The Minnesota State High School Hockey Tournament is on the air!" was heard as the broadcast and music started.
I think the screen was split into 3 parts, showing past highlights i suppose. And I think WTCN kept that until opening until the lost the rights to KSTP. I suppose early on, when WTCN was the only independent station in town, they were the only station willing to disrupt their regular schedule. I'm guessing once basketball split into A & AA hockey became big enough to forgo regular network programing for the hockey tournament. I think WTCN had the broadcast rights through 1979.
I'd love to see the video of the opening. I can't recall the personalities they had on the air then. Joe Boyle rings a bell. I also recall the coach of SPA being interviewed between periods in 1974, having just won the final independent tournament the week before.
"Hoedown" seems like an odd name for a tune that sounds so techno.

Hoedown
ELP .. Hoedown .. Remember it well !!!
If you guys remember those days , you may want to listen to this radio broadcast of Frank Buetel calling the 3rd period of the Edina East vs. Sibley game.
I posted this a couple months ago.
I added some pics and articles to glance at while you listen to Frank.

Frank Buetel !!
Yes, a couple weeks ago, I posted this link to Frank calling the 3rd period of the undefeated 1974 Edina East comeback in the semi's vs Sibley.
We were down 2-0 going into the 3rd period and Sibley scored again to make it 3-0, then with about 9 minutes left in the game, we scored 5 goals in 6 minutes to win 5-3.
Even Frank was stunned as well as us and everyone in the Met Center!!

Actually from 1970-1978 Twin Cities Federal(the lead sponsor) had the rights to all tournaments. They put them on Channel 11. For the 1979 tourney KSTP put to together a bid of $72,276.75 for each of two years plus 1/2 cost of printing programs and tickets and film highlights of all other state events They renewed the contract for the 1981 and 1982 tourneys at a cost of 1981 - $78,058.89 1982 - $84,303.60East Side Pioneer Guy wrote:Whoa! (Included financial assistance on all programs and hockey ticket printing.)
A Few years ago I asked for(and got) the TV history of the Big 44 televised tournaments in Minnesota(Football Boys and Girls Basketball and Boys Hockey). Now the contract with 45 includes all tournaments over the air(and those not OTA) are webcast. Very interesting information
