My kid's team played at Vadnais Heights a couple of weeks ago. My opinion is it is a very nice arena but is way overbuilt and I'm not surprised that it's struggling due to its final price tag. As I looked around there were so many unnecessary features and wasted space that could have been eliminated in order to keep costs down. Our parents did enjoy the adjoining bar so I wouldn't call that area "wasted space"...or maybe I could.
The freeways (694 and I-35) in that area are a mess and a HUGE problem but it can be avoided by planning ahead and taking alternate routes. I've always said that about the Cities, there are 50 different routes that will take you to the same place.
Totally agree with the poorly marked entrances. I felt like I broke a few traffic laws getting into that place. Is that entrance for exit only? I still don't know but I thought it was the only entrance. Had no idea there was another one.
As for food options. Fast food? Are you serious? We shouldn't be feeding our kids that crap anyways. Besides, Jimmie's is right down the street and that place is great. Try the Cajun Walley Bites. They also have two-fer beer specials for happy hour. End of business plug.

I appreciate the comments SCBlueLiner. Most people like the arena itself. I agree with you that in some ways there are too many "bells and whistles". Disagree on the food angle, so we disagree. I am glad someone else feels guilty about crossing that double line especially when they pull around and find a patrol car out in front of the north entrance. Thanks again for the comments.
