One thing I know is that one of these teams will have a "1" in the loss or tie column after tonight. My hunch says Denfeld will drop from the ranks of the state's undefeated. Mainly because Virginia is so tough at home.

The Blue Devils haven't lost at home since the first game of the season last year against Rosemount when a lot of the team hadn't practiced because of the football team's state tournament appearance. The year before they were 13-3 at home, with one of those losses coming at the hands of Denfeld (The other two were to Lake of the Woods and St. Cloud Cathedral).

The Miner's Memorial Building has become an unfriendly place to visitors over the past few years. Virginia is 28-4-1 at home since Feb. 16, 2003. (The tie was against Hibbing to end of last year's regular season.) Note that you don't see losses to the area's more traditional powers like Grand Rapids, Hibbing, I Falls, Hermantown, etc... who have all played there over that timespan more than once.

Denfeld has this one. This seems to be the best Denfeld team in a long time. This is gonna be an amazing game. Hope to see you all there.

Denfeld- 4

VMIB- 2

I agree that this is the best DD team in a long time, but sorry, they don't stand a chance. JJ is half the team and he can't be on the ice the whole game. Also, the BlueDevils have their own super stud sophmore.

6-2 Virginia (Johnson getting both DD goals)

IMO

I'm very suprised to see so many people think Denfeld is going to get destroyed, you might want to think again. Denfeld has no reason to be afraid of Virginia after beating them two years ago and playing them to the final seconds last year. Denfeld's top two lines will be more than a handful for Virginia. If their third line is able to play well expect to see them get the W. And to the guy who thinks Denfeld will get shut out, HA! Offense is Denfeld's pride and joy, Virginia won't keep them under 3 goals tonight.

Prediction:
Denfeld 5
Virginia 3

Turns out that Jake didn't need to be on the ice the whole game. Just long enough to notch a hat trick

This is a huge win for Denfeld. Nothing to do with section seedings, of course, since they're 2A, but from serving notice that they're to be reckoned with this year.

Lee
____________
Message Board arsonist since 2005

Wow, what a shock.... I think?! Virginia lost at home-looking at previous comments-it's been a long time. Is Denfeld really just that good this year or has Virginia been having trouble lately?

Well Virginia has no had no trouble this year beating Grand Rapids a decent AA school and then IFalls and a decent Mount Westonka team.
On top of that Denfeld took out a Hermantown team who beat the number one ranked team in Wisconsin tonight (Superior) 8-1.
You do the math.

Virginia Refs!

Post by HHS HoCkEy FaN »

I am glad to see Denfeld win this one! I was there to route on the Devils but after I seen the calls the refs were making and not making I started to cheer for denfeld. Those refs are a discrace! To bad they didn't make enough bad calls against Denfeld to win the game for VMIB. Hibbing is the only one left undefeated now in 7a now. No clue how long that is going to last because of such a tough schedule!

Re: Virginia Refs!

I didn't think the refs did that bad of a job. They let one go that I thought should've been called on Sacchetti - a high stick - but other than that, I thought they did alright. They did get on the Denfeld bench for late line changes quite a bit though.

This was a very good game. I thought Virginia dominated the first period, and Denfeld the second. The third was pretty even, maybe a slight edge to Virginia because of a couple power plays. Denfeld's Melby played a very good game in goal --especially in the first, while Peterson from Virginia didn't have his best game. Special teams played a big part of this one, Denfeld's power play was very good. 2 for 3 if I recall. While Virginia was blanked on 5 or 6 chances, including a 5 on 3. Shots on goal were Virginia-41, Denfeld-35

Also, just for the record, Jake Johnson (although he was definitely a standout player in the game) only scored one goal. The other goals were scored by Trent Johnson (2), Brett Johnson, and Chris Stafne. Jake did have 2 assists.

Virginia goals were scored by Corey Andrews, Jared Miettunen, and Nico Sacchetti. Sacchetti also had an assist.

Full box score here:
<a href="http://www.section7hockey.com/BoxScore. ...

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p100.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... kRanger at: 12/14/05 6:51 am

From what I have seen and heard of Virginia lately, this loss shouldn't surprise anyone. In fact, it will probably do them some good to help re-focus and get back to reality a little bit.

Denfeld played very well, they earned the win. As far as the bad calls, there were a few i never saw ( restroom) but they all looked legit to me except the denfeld 3 on 1 offside call.
Virginia had a bad night thats all there is too it, Ive been watching most of these guys since they were pee-wees they have what it takes to get to where-ever they want to go. They WILL figure it out !!

Bright side: J.V. won 4-0

7aahockey fan is right. Denfeld is a very good team. I'm pretty sure they're gonna be ranked in the top 10 from here on out, barring injuries to anyone on the first line.

Anyone who thinks otherwise must not have seen them play. They are a hard working, determined group. Unfortunately, GR19's thought of these two teams meeting in the X in March has two big obstacles in the way. The biggest is Duluth Marshall standing in Denfeld's path in 2A. And of course, Hibbing and Hermantown aren't gonna hand 7A to Virginia either. Although it certainly wouldn't be unrealistic for it to happen.

HHS Hockey Fan: Do you ever get off the refs. Last year you beat them up as well. I was at the game and they called everything they should have except the high stick on 9 for Virginia. Do you think they made up those calls? Get a clue! There were 14 penalties, 9 on Denfeld and 5 on VHS. You should have seen the Rapids game where if you touched someone, there was a penalty, 23 total. That isn't hockey. Maybe you should lace up the skates and put the stripes on since you have such a vast knowledge of the rules and game. Give it a rest and stay in Hibbing to watch the dynamic duo work the refs like always. That is all you have to do in Hibbing is cry about the officiating. Play the game because it all evens out in the end.

Virginia - Denfeld

Post by loneranger22 »

Couple comments... The Refs were from Hibbing...the game was refed OK... these guys are know for their inconsistancy I player can obstruct on one shift then do the same on the next and get called for it. The one goal Virginia scored (disallowed) was in...puck in the goalies glove but glove was a foot over the line when the puck fell into his glove...Ref was not in position, I was on the goal line.

Denfeld has a good team... good speed and quickness and guys with good skills. They work very hard and are well coached. Their goalie played very well as has the other goalie. We all know goaltending is huge.

Game had several momentum swings.

Virginia power play was not clicking at all. Up until the I Falls game it was running at @ 53%.

We are very early in the season here...I thought both coaches were experimenting a bit on line match ups...first against 2nd and 3rd both ways several times during the game.

Congrats to the Hunters.

If the puck was in, why didn't the red light come on? I saw the ref ask the goal judge and he shook his head that it wasn't in. Last time I checked, the home team is responsible for the goal judges. Maybe this guy was honest Virginianite. I think if there was any doubt that it went in, Hendrickson would have been all over the ref. The players didn't even complain. I do know a good optometrist if you need your eyesight checked.

On the disputed goal, the goal judge did not turn on the red light because the puck was in the goaltender's glove and he could not tell whether the puck itself was over the line. Part of the glove was over the line, but he could not tell if the puck was in that part. If you've ever been in the Miner's, the goal judge on that end of the rink has to look right through the crossbar as opposed to the other end where the goal judge has a bird's eye view.

Anyway, someone on the goal line would have had a better look at it than the goal judge on this particular play. The referee was in the same boat, he couldn't tell if the puck was over the line or not (he wasn't in position, I might add). He asked the goal judge if he could tell if the glove was over the line, and the goal judge honestly responded with "no, I couldn't".

This is one that video replay would have been handy to have with the overhead shot. It wasn't clear cut as TheGame74 makes it sound. I've seen replay's from a camera from the center ice view, and the only thing you can say is it is too close to say one way or the other. You can't award a goal if you don't see the puck over the line, so I can't argue with the call. I doubt an optometrist would help anyone with that one.

Also, the Virginia players did ask the officials about the call and coach Hendrickson was yelling from the bench. The players handled it with class and accepted the call without further discussion. Not everyone whines when calls don't go there way, TheGame74, which is more than I can say for a couple (not all) kids on the Denfeld team. I can't recall the last time I saw such tantrum over an offside call. The kid was lucky he didn't get a misconduct on that... although he managed to get one later for arguing a penalty call.

This is a moot point anyway. Virginia would've still needed two other goals to win the game.
