Hermantown parents tried to kick North Branch out of the tournament today because they're a B-1 team. They had them listed as a B-1 team entered into their tournament on their website for quite a while. They knew! Hermantown was on the ice with Bemidji until it was decided that North Branch was able to advance. Hermantown parents were telling their kids to stay on the ice.
2/2/13 got going way after the start time
Sad thing is Bo, that the Hermantown A Pee wee team was in Chisago Lakes for their Pee Wee A tournament. Irondale/St. Francis and Forest Lake were the only AA Pee Wee teams in the tournament. Hermantown, ISF and Forest Lake all won their first games. Hermantown parents protest to the tournament director that ISF and Forest Lake be removed from the tournament because they are AA teams playing in an A tournament. Hermantown loses to ISF and Forest Lake. Guess who wins this tournament North Country Blue Devils beat ISF 2-1 in a shoot out. I don't think it matters if your a AA or A team because that is supposed to be for district playoffs, regionals and state tournaments. They do not offer a lot of AA tournaments during the regular season. In the end Hermantown needs to look at how their parents treat players of those teams and officials of both the games and tournaments.
Seems like this is a common Problem with Hermantown.
Funny how the parents didn't have problem a few weeks ago using Cloquet squirt A goalie for the Two Harbors tournament. I wonder if both associations presidents new about that or the the district knew about it. Win at all cost. Nice work H-Town. Real classy.

if their goalie was hurt, and no goalies in the assc. available to move up, and they go thru proper channels, and it does'nt interfer with cloquet's game schedule, what's wrong with it?
Goalie was on vacation...they have 3 'B' teams, but didn't think it would be fair to pick one of the three...someone feelings would have gotten hurt:) They shorten then bench in most games...it is all about winning. Nice to see a North Branch 'B1' team beat them.
Hermantown should have a hard time filling any of their tournaments from here on out. Classless.
Isn't the coach of team from Warroad? Hockeytown USA. Town of around 2000 people who's teams historically would take anyone on at any level. Hopefully a few crazy parents made this occur. Hard to do without support of coaches???
Maybe should look at losing to B1 team as motivating factor to get better.
Good work parents. Great message to all the kids involved!!!
There will probably be more coming, a number of years ago at a 12A Girls tournament an association allowed 2 12B teams in. End result the association was fined and was not allowed to hold a 12A invitational tournament for 2 years and also were fined and since they had removed the teams after the first round, all expenses (motel rooms and tournament fee) were also included. The 2 12B coaches were also punished for the violation of Mn Hockey rules, A teams do not play B teams without approval of the District Director(s).

Before we pile on Hermantown too much here, how about North Branch? They aren't innocent in this. Why did a "B1" team enter a "A" tournament to begin with? Clearly against the rules of Minnesota Hockey. If they wanted to play in "A" tournaments, why not have "A" team? Sure they beat Hermantown's "A" team, but they did it with the equivalent to a "A" team as they have 3 squirt teams in their association; a B1, B2 and C team.
From what I hear NB is a town that hasn't gone A before. So folks are hesitant to make the jump. It sounds like they will next year. We [FL] have had A teams with only three teams many times, So I guess I do agree suck it up and play A. It might be tough but the kids will reap the benefits by highschool.

From what I have heard 9 of the 13 players on the North Branch B1 team were A Mites last year and I would imagine that is why they opted for B1 instead of A. Not only that but they are a very small association with about 35 squirts total in those 3 teams so I think it's great that they were able to not only compete with the Hermantown A team but beat them. You don't just get to walk into any tournament without proper authorizations and as MrBoDangles pointed out NB was listed on the website as B1, they knew. I don't think it was by accident that Hermantown had NB as their first game, they expected a B1 team, they didn't expect to lose.

Really???? From who?
The folks holding the tournament should know the rules!!!! The North Branch coaches thought they were all clear after talking to higher ups from both parties.
North Branch B-1(B-1 was on there) was listed on your A squirt tournament teams for over two months on your website. ALL the other teams knew North Branch was B-1 going in.
I sure hope Hermantown had proper authorization since it was their tournament.

Wrong, they both should know the rules! Hermantown doesn't make the rules . . . . . Minnesota Hockey does. If supposedly Hermantown did tell them it was ok, they are not the authority on the subject, MN Hockey is. Read the rule book. Page 27 in MN Hockey Handbook. I'm still wondering why a B1 team wants to enter a A tourney to begin with?

Trap, sounds like Hermantown will have plenty of time to think if this actually wasn't cleared.
Kinda like getting on jet with a drunken pilot.
Grey, If this is the case, District 10 should get a six figure fine for allowing A teams to get slaughtered by AA teams all year in district play. Pay back the families for all the wasted time and money spent.
9/10 year old kids just looking to try their skills against the big boys......

Both Hermantown and North Branch will have time to think about it as they both will probably be penning checks to MN Hockey for the violation. No matter what Hermantown told them, they were in violation of a rule.
A teams playing AA teams are technically only for the playoffs. Do not need any special permission for them to play during the season.

From the sound of Greybeards post, Hemantown will take the brunt of it.
If it wasn't ok'd...
Greybeard is talking fines because of mixing levels and yet we have a slaughter fest going on in District 10 with the AA/A levels...? We, the people, should maybe fine the districts to keep THEM in line....... But now the kids in an association that is STRUGGLING to build a rink for the kids will get fined? Should the kids to turn in their skates at the next District 10 meeting too? The AA/A thing was forced, not the same as choosing as a team to enter a tournament.

Since you don't understand that there is no difference in letter designation for AA/A split during regular season and it is only meant for district play offs, regionals and state tournaments your argument isn't valid.
Should A high schools say no we won't play AA high school because we will lose. No those schools want to play the AA high schools to get better and most of the A pee wee and bantam teams want the same thing. Maybe we should fine you for being ignorant.

Argument is valid. AA does not equal A, just as last year A did not equal B1. Nothing has changed here except the letter designation. D10 did a horse poo job of this. Congrats D10 you made a point at the expense of 60 or so families. I have a couple of good friends on the losing end of this (Blaine, ER, and Andover) they explain this year as the worst they may have ever seen. Kids talking about quitting, kids faking injuries so they don't have to skate again this year ... I can't believe I'm saying this, I hate to encourage him ... but BoDiggityDangles called it. The implementation was pathetic.

I disagree it is not the districts fault that these associations decided to field an A and AA team. That would be the Associations fault not the districts. The district gave warning they were keeping the schedule how it was from their pilot last season before associations needed to designate their teams. I see that Spring Lake Park and North Country have both beaten AA teams this season. So how is this such a bad thing for those associations?
Maybe the associations that wanted AA and A teams should have looked at whats going on before fielding both teams. Maybe the associations that had AA teams should have put their second team at the B1 level instead. Not the Districts fault the Associations fault. In years past both Blaine and Elk River have had 2 B1 teams. One was usually at the top of the district the other was at the bottom. I blame the associations not the district.
