Am i NUTS
Squirt hockey tournament weekend.
my boy asks me to skate with cousins in backyard one night during tournament.
I say yes!
Other parents on team ridicule me next day.
Seriously? Am i the crazy one?

You are not nuts at all.
But, if he skated, or swam, or ran the halls until 3AM while you partied like a rock star, then the question really isn't about skating.
Used to have a goalie like this. His mom wanted to make sure he had lots of fun on tournament weekends. I guess unless you get to bed at 4am before your 8AM game you are not having any fun.
It's all about drawing lines. Very subtle differences that some can't grasp.

Your team has a game at 9AM and again at 4PM.
Player 1 - Back to hotel at 10:30. Swim for two hours followed by some lunch, maybe a quick nap in front of the TV, back to the arena at 3.
Player 2 - Back to the hotel at 10:30, swim until 3:00, no food except for a bag of Doritos, Skittles and a liter of Dew, back to the arena at 3:45, still wet.
Again, subtle differences, hard to grasp. Coach finds it easier to just say no swimming.

Seriously, swimming between games? I get swimming for a couple hours in the evening after the days games are over but BETWEEN games. Is this a hockey trip or did we spend all this time and money to go to a destination pool party?
As to the OP, I see nothing wrong with getting in an outdoor skate in the evening. As long as Jr got plenty of sleep that night and wasn't playing XBox til 2AM.
EDIT: Didn't see the line about coaches finding it easier to say no swimming, given the two circumstances.

Once your kids hockey career is over you will have a whole new perpective on ths. here's my take on this: is this Squirt age kid somewhat in shape? I am assuming he is, probably in very good shape. a typical squirt hockey game is three 13-minute periods. if there are 3 line on his team in the perfect world he is skating for 13 minutes out of that 60 minute ice time. - if you think a little extra-activity is harming a kid this age, then yes - your nuts. Its a Squirt Game - nothing more then that!!

No disrespect BPopcorn.. really.. so crazy off the charts..
Mackjogger, you did the right thing. I do not care what hockey team he is on A, B or gee even C.. guess what kids on C give a rip so that has no bearing. My thing is as long as his skates were sharp who cares! Let your son have fun with his family and ignore all these ignorant comments. I suppose you set yourself up asking that question. As a parent I think we know what is best for our kid..

I always hated the no swim thing. I also always made my kids do what the coach said.
The problem was always that if the coach gave an inch the kids/parents took a mile. There is nothing wrong with quick dip between games. It might even help.
I agree the kids are in shape and it won't hurt them. That said, if your kid is at the point where he can't stay awake on the way to the arena, did you maybe take it a bit too far? I get that it is just a game, but maybe learning a bit of respect for your team mates, even if they are nuts, is part of the deal.

I am a "just a game" kind of guy. I really am.No disrespect BPopcorn.. really.. so crazy off the charts..
That said, those kids that got no sleep, food, extra sugar...They are still getting no sleep before their High School games, it shows.
I guess to me it is not even about hockey. I don't like to be around my kids when they are that beat and high on Skittles and Dew.

What? Skating? was your kid sluggish on the ice? Did the other parents advise laying motionless all weekend?
The dreaded "pool". Biggest superstition out there and looks like it will be passed on to the next generation.
I'm stiil pissed about not being able to go in the lake for an hour after having a couple bites of macaroni and cheese and peanut butter sandwich...

It was tough on me sitting on the dock looking at the water.elliott70 wrote:It worked. You did not drown, right?MrBoDangles wrote:What? Skating? was your kid sluggish on the ice? Did the other parents advise laying motionless all weekend?

Your parents wouldn't let you fish for an hour after you ate either?MrBoDangles wrote:It was tough on me sitting on the dock looking at the water.elliott70 wrote:It worked. So are you trying to tell me that swimming is not a vigourous aerobic exercise that burns a lot of energy?MrBoDangles wrote:What? Skating? was your kid sluggish on the ice? Did the other parents advise laying motionless all weekend?

Let's get Myth Busters on the job.
Posters: These are Squirts. Gosh knows how much time these kids put into the sport of hockey along with parents. To me, these weekend type tourneys were a ton of fun for everyone involved. The kids played a lot of hockey, swam a lot, ran around, played X box, did kid stuff and were usually exhausted by 10pm. The adults ran the kids all over, got to embibie in some beverages, swam too, and also had a lot of fun. If these types of weekends aren't fun for everyone, my thoughts are that teams won't go to the tourneys......Except for the 9 Edina, Wyazata, etc AA squirt teams.........just kidding about the number.......but bet their kids are totally envious of the kids swimming and having fun between games.......just my 2 cents worth.........

XBox - Check
Shinny Hockey - Check
Nintendo DS - Check
iPods/iPads - Check
Adult beverages for the parents - Check
Swimming - only after the days games are over and only for a couple hours.
Bedtime - 10PM
Not too many rules to follow and it's not like the kids don't have fun. The point is we came on this trip to play hockey. Swimming can be done any other time. Just so I don't mislead you I am anti-swimming but not anti-fun.
The kids on our team are not big into swimming anyways. When given the choice most of them are off in the rooms playing shinny hockey. 3-4 sets at every tournament. They all bring their graphite ministicks. Rooms are named after the big rinks (The Ralph, Mariucci, Xcel, etc) and tournament brackets are formed.
I think they have a good time.

Now that is funny.Too hot always. Just melted on the dock while all my cousins swam because their moms said screw the "golden" rule.
Who said anything about vigorous? I think 30 minutes to an hour in the pool is probably beneficial as it's fun and helps the kids to relax. A few trips down the water slide does not hurt athletic performance. So are you trying to tell me that swimming is not a vigourous aerobic exercise that burns a lot of energy?
What about a non-stop mini stick tourney where all the boys are dripping in sweat. My sons team played tackle football with another association in the volleyball court in St. Cloud. He called me on the phone about that one. What!!! Probably not the best idea. I think 30 minutes relaxing in the pool would have been a much better idea. Hey, they'll find stuff to do even if it's just running the hallways that use much more energy. Also different between boys and girls as boys do play it rough in the pool on occasion while the girls sit and chat. Hot tub, different story.
A short amount of time in the pool is not detrimental unless one of the kids drowns. I remember my son spending 3 days at a hotel in Duluth with a pool and water park, at Squirt age, and he never got wet. That was wrong.
