Regional Seeds

Post by edgeless2 »

Just wondering out loud. How is D6 only receiving 4 seeds to regions, while some other districts are receiving more? Just wondering what MN hock has used for criteria to apply the number of district seeds? Common sense would say number of registered players would dictate this but doesn't seem to be the case.

Edge: I have been to a few of the MNH meetings lately and the formula they used was:

1. Handbook (so however many games your district was given via the pre-prescribed handbook for this year). This year I believe D6 had 3.

2. Next was participation by all districts. Several AA teams and bids were sent back(i.e. district 4 had zero teams so their 2 bids got sent back). This process threw out a few more bids to districts (like 6 and 8 with high participation).

3. Next was proportion. District 8 and District 10 had proportionally more AA teams than D6...so they got proportionally more bids.

If it makes you happy, Brad Hewitt was publicly dismayed at the last D6 meeting about how "badly D6 got screwed out of bids"...so the last of this topic hasn't been heard from I'm sure. His main beef was the districts with 2 bids and 2 participants (e.g. D12, D3, etc). These teams don't even have to play a district tournament or schedule anything meanwhile his district teams have to run the gauntlet in their district and then have to play against their district in Regions. I'd say his point is somewhat valid - like any good legislator he's protecting his turf.

I think there is a fair compromise to this, but it would be way too fair:

1. Grant every District 2 bids (if they don't get used, they get thrown back into an at large pool. This would insure fair regional participation.
2. This year there would be 21 auto bids and 11 at large.
3. Once the auto bids are selected, a committee from MNH would select the next 11 teams based on their ranking, strength of schedule, etc.
4. Once those teams are selected, the teams would be seeded....some would pack up and travel, some would stay home. Travel throughout the state is very common. Most PWAA teams travel 2x a year already, an extra trip would be a bonus to most parents and players.

Here is a how I see PW AA would look hypothetically for fun:

Auto Seeds:

2. WBL and Stillwater
3. Wayzata and OMG
5. STMA and MAML
6. Edina and Minnetonka
8. LVS and Eastview
9. Rochester
10. Centennial and Elk River
11. Duluth East and Hermantown
12. Grand Rapids and Hibbing
15. Brainerd and Moorhead (they play today BTW)
16. Bemidji and Roseau

The next 11 by our rankings would be:

St. Cloud, Prior Lake, Eden Prairie, Lakeville North, Hastings, Roseville, Woodbury, Andover, Chaska/Chan, Cloquet and Irondale/St. Francis.

Teams on the outside who could win their way in via District Tournament: Blaine, Champlin Park, Jefferson and River Lakes (all four are playing really well right now).

GB58: Do you like my hypothetical? I've received a lot of emails from MNH folks, friends, etc in favor of this model. The two words I hear from everyone is "fair" and "fun".

Tony,
To be honest I really dislike any advancement from the District to regions and guaranteeing the top poll teams a place in the Region. As an example when LPH did their B invite for the best teams in their pool 2 teams never made it too their District finals yet were ranked ahead of the teams that beat them.

Right now District get told the number of seeds they get and it is up to the District to determine who would go as #1 and so on.

Region advancement like the state tournament,it is earned by playing your way their not handed to you by some poll which people would say who is number 1.
Do it your way we can save a lot of money when the season ends and give the state championship yo your #1 rated team for each level, or as a famous Stillwater football coach once said we can give all babies their state medal when they are born.
I do not look at your polls or the LPH rankings as they are ego strokers to the parents and kids and sometimes coaches put victories for pol numbers rather than teaching. All polls to me mean nothing.

GB: that line by Thole is awesome. I heard it a little different "why don't we just mail everyone a state champions trophy at the beginning of the season and the teams that don't think they deserve one at the end of the year can just mail it back..."

My suggestion is not necessarily a poll, simply some method that selects teams based on merit versus zip code or district.

We have two polls for this reason...one subjective and weekly (staff) and one objective and daily (NOW Rankings) to give our readers a good feel for where their teams stand.

OG: WBL is in D2. Knowing that district, it could be quite possibly be the case where it is in their BY LAWS that they get a bid (and some spending money, too)...haha. As far as I know, D2 has 3 seeds in BAA and they will have to earn it on the ice in a district playoff.
