Advance 17's - National Camp Teams

Post by neutralregroup »

There are now 18 MN players listed on the rosters. Hespenheide (Shakopee) has been invited. More than 1/4 of the camp will feel right at "home" in St. Cloud!

6 defensemen
10 forwards
2 goalies

Congratulations to all of you!

Should be a great weekend for the girls that are not committed. The timing of this year's camp allows the college coaches to talk with the players.

It's weird how the 16's had two all star teams, but for the 17's it was a combined 16&17 all stars. Some very deserving (IMO) 17's were squeezed out as a result.

Some low-scoring games, a testament to how good the defense & goaltending is at this camp. A total of 24 goals were scored in 8 games, avg of 3 goals per game, or 1.5 goals per game for each team.

That is weird. The 16s are possibly being selected for an upcoming tournament as I know the 16s last year were. Maybe the 17s aren't so they don't need to see as many of them. It means darn near every 16 made one of the All-Star teams.

Did the All-Star teams play any games?

(I looked at the All-Star rosters a minute ago but now they're down. Maybe they're just doing some updating to the site)

Yeah, a total of 28 forwards at the 16 age level (96's) were selected for one of the all-star teams. 18 for the 96 all stars and 10 for the 95/96 all-star teams. In contrast, 14 forwards at the 17 age level (95's) were selected for an all star team.

I wouldn't say that 17's were squeezed out since this is the first time, at least in the last few years, they have not just held a single combined 16/17 all-star game. So, think of the separate 16's game as being comparable to the NBA's rising stars game during its all-star weekend. Or, an alternative theory might be that USA Hockey just wants to recognize a larger fraction of the non-Minnesota girls on their all-star rosters, especially at the 16s level :)

In this regard, 7 of the 14 girls from the 16's that made the 16/17 rosters were from MN. That comes out to 33% for our 16's camp participants (7 of 21) versus 8.6% for the rest of the country (7 of 81). Adding the separate 16's all-star game improves the recognition to 36% for the non-Minnesota 16's (29 of 81). Of course, it also increases our regonition rate to 90% (19 of 21) for our 16's girls :D

Looks like the all star game might be eliminated from here on out. I just heard that the 15's have told the girls there will be no allstar game. The final game day of camp everyone plays and it is 1 vs 2, 3 vs 4, 5 vs 6.
Once again everyone gets to go home happy and we all get a ribbon.
