YHH Commentary - Shots on Goal

I wrote a little article on guys reporting scores about their kids' teams and one thing that is a new pet peeve (lol):

instead of asking

"how did you guys do against (rival)?"

to get some sort of mental picture of how the game went...
other teams D and Goalie were hot
teams goalie was on mars
maybe a Tourney game where the coach pulled the goalie and left him out for the last 2 on a 3-6 game
maybe they did get outshot or they outshot the other team
other team was down some players and only had 9 on the bench
I think we could go on and on about how games are Won or Lost
just turn on ESPN or read the Papers or Blogs
some people like to talk about it for many reasons

if those are not things you care to hear about or need to know
you should just ask "Did you win or Lose?" and not "how did you guys do?"

I think like everything it depends. First of all shots on goal are an important stat both to goalies and to a team. My son's Pee Wee team has played another team 3 times, first game the score was 9-3 and shots on goal were 49-10, second game the score was 9-2 and shots on goal were 43-12 but the kids were ordered not to shoot in the 3rd period until every player had touched the puck via a pass and if they lost the puck they had to start over (hence SOG could have been more if it weren't for wanting to coach team play and good sportsmanship), last game final score was 5-4 with shots on goal being 52-13. In all three games play was completely dominated with my sons team controlling the offensive zone in every facet imagineable, the one thing that team had going for it was a strong goalie. Goalies are absolutely part of the team and do contribute to a final score but in trying to assess how one's team did and how they played and how you feel about their development then final score is not even remotely the most important stat. In fact, it's not close to be at the top for YOUTH hockey

Hmmm...this Tony whomever says this:


"See or talk to a guy (99 times out of a 100, it’s a guy) and I’m interested to know how little Johnny/Jenny’s team fared in their game that day or recently. So I ask, “how did you guys do against (rival)?”"


I guess I'd have more respect for Tony if he asked how Johnny/Jenny is developing and is he/she having fun? But I guess that's one of my pet peeves.

Then why don't you ask "what was the score of the game?". Asking how you did is more of an open ended question which will result in more information than a game score. For a guy who is trying to "sell" more information I'm surprised this is your pet peeve. My pet peeve is someone who asks open ended questions then tells me its their pet peeve when they get too much information
