Open hockey logistics

Post by flpucknut »

How many of your associations have an open hockey option available in the summer? My son has been playing with a team from another area and they have a couple hours a week dedicated to open hockey/ stick and puck. I think the kids get plenty of drills during the season. Our area doesn't offer anything like this, and on my own haven't been able to find any answers. I'd like to get some feedback on if you do and who runs it, the rink or the association.

5 hours per week of open hockey ice available at our rink from the time the winter season ends in March until it begins in October. It is run by the rink not the association

No where even remotely close to Minneapolis....... It is a suburb of Madison, WI. Believe it or not there are SOME, albeit not many, perks to not skating in MN

We have open hockey at most of the rinks around here all summer long too. Like yours it really has nothing to do with the association, it's all run by the city.

Madison's kind of a haul, do you come to the cities for any summer tournaments?

Yes, sometimes. We were in the Twin Cities this spring for both the MN Meltdown and the Shock Doctor tourney. Will be in Duluth in August for the LSS Ice Cup. So yeah we get up there a couple times a year, always have fun playing up there.

To clarify a little though, most of our rinks are NOT owned by the cities or municipalities, most of them are privately owned. Where we live we have quite alot of ice available to us year round we take advantage of, but that is not the norm for most rinks even by us.

Most rinks list it on their websites.
Some you have to call. Braemar is doing Sat developmental/open hockey that is not on the website.

developmental hockey, open hockey, open skate, dead ice, stick & puck - lots of names and lots of availability.

On the topic of Open Hockey, Minneapolis runs 3 on 3 Pond Hockey down at Parade. Our sessions for 2nd Yr Peewees and Bantams still have nine openings. Over the years, we have had kids from all over the metro skate at these.

These are low structure...."parents stay out of the way" sessions that allow the kids to just have fun playing for an hour. Sticks are thrown into a pile at the beginning and teams of three are randomly selected for the hour. Very low key and fun. All I know is the kids leave the ice tired out after the hour.

Skill levels of the kids participating range from "C" to "A". All sessions are at Parade on Mondays and Thursdays. 20+ sessions for $95.....make the ones you can make....miss the ones that you have to miss.
