I don't know how Lucia didn't win Coach of the Year. He took a group of third line Junior B kids and got a home series. Just imagine if he had 15-20 draft picks to lead.

If he did get fired, stepped down, or retired, who would take it over? Would you give it to the Vanelli brothers. They know how to bring talent together and create good chemistry. Or the Miami OH coach? Let's face it Dean Blais isn't coming.

The U won't hire a coach without a degree. I remember they wanted Trent Tucker to be an assistant BB coach, but at the time he didn't have his degree. Not sure if Phil ever got his?

Here is what I suspect happened and my prediction:

Maturi and the "Don" met to discuss his contract.

The "Don" tells "Joke" Maturi, "I need 3 more years to see this promising freshman class through. We showed that we can compete, but lacked experience at the playoffs."

"Joke" Maturi says "Ok Don, whatever you want, and do you know we are hosting a regional next season?" "If we are not in it, your gonna force my hand to do something."

The Don repsonds, "Joke, Penn State is banging on my door, don't threaten me, cause I'm gonna leave on my terms. You are a lame duck AD with a new president coming in."

My prediction:

If they don't make the big dance next season, "Joke" Maturia will be gone, The Don will step down before he is fired, Mario will go to Notre Dame, Bjugstad will depart to the pro's, and the stands will be half full for the 2012-13 season.

Why do you believe Dean Blais isn't/wouldn't come to the U to coach the Gophers? Not that I agree or disagree, I'm just wondering what makes you say that. I guess because having Blais here would be what I'd love to see as well as many others. I think he'd come, but I have absolutly nothing to base that on other than he played here.

He said before he wanted to end his coaching career at UNO.

And with this extension, I doubt Dean will be around if there was a change in the future.

Not sure if Don is out of the woods yet. Heard a couple of influential alumni are going after him hard.

If Lucia signed an extension then he will not get let go...However, that might not be the case when the new president and new athletic director take over.

Then at that time we could have another coach to pay after getting rid of him. Nice job Maturi!

I think Maturi said he is going to, but it hasn't been signed?

If there is a change (which I'm not too optimistic about) then maybe those "influential alumni" that mulefarm mentions could all chip in and pay his remaining salary. The worst thing that could happen IMO would be if Maturi - on his way out - were to pick the new coach and sign him to a long term contract!

Jerry Kill? The head football coach of the Gopher Football team, Jerry Kill? He has a lot on his plate already.

Ramsey would also be a good get as well.

As for the grammar cops, I only enforce that if I don't like you. :P

Dziedzic. (Not being a cop here) Image

A former Mr. Hockey and NHLer would be good; however, does he have a degree? I recall that being a prerequisite the U enforces for the hiring process for a head coaching position.

Looks like he has a very nice training camp! http://www.jdhockey.com/

I know kids and parents seem to like him. He's at SPA now. You may be right. I think he left the U early.
