XPOSURE TOURNAMENT - Mid March @ Shattuck

Post by F14 »

Please post rosters and schools for players who have been accepted.

240 spots for 12 teams

5 Games per team the Weekend of March 18-19-20 (Yes games all day on Friday)

Are there really that many scouts from colleges, USHL, in attendance?

Not true. A fun weekend of high quality hockey and a chance to get noticed. All hockey is expensive.

Didn't say anything about free hockey. But just wondering where the $76,560 for the tournament goes?

A lot of the money goes to Elite league...some to SSM. This is a nice fundraiser for the Elite league and the 'scouting' is mainly the Elite league coaches watching for players for their fall teams. Most of the players for those teams are already determined but a good showing could help you. There are a few scouts from other places but most are MJHL scouts. The hockey is alright but the primary reason to attend is to increase your chances to make the Elite league if you aren't already on their radar. They should just promote it that way but it doesn't sell as well. At least they've moved the date up which is nice.

this tournament is in mid march, right after great 8 and right during USHL, NAHL, Midget AAA and college playoffs

Im sure all the top scouts are there

Shattuck profits probably over 30k by doing this tournament. Its a big money maker for them, and thats about it.

Okay, so all of you self absorbed experts... Where else can a kid go play 5 games with quality players and a few scouts in attendance? Oh and for free because at this point in your kids/personnal youth hockey experience it makes a ton of sense to just give up and pass up opportunities to maybe be seen by someone at the next level just due to the fact someone else is prospering off your cash!!!! I will give you a clue......someone has profitted off your money from day 1 that you signed up for hockey!

I will say that $319 to play 5 games seems steep. I don't know of another tournament at any age that charges that much per skater in these parts. Then add in travel expenses, and even lodging for those who arent within commuting range (Duluth, Grand Rapids, Moorhead, Roseau, even St. Cloud, etc).

Also, you are being asked to skip a day of school (2 games on Friday).

As others here have often said, if you are good enough, the scouts will find you. And if you are good enough to make Elite I already, those coaches will want you and make sure you are placed on an Elite I roster.

This appears to me to be most attractive to a fine player who hasn't been challenged during the high school season and whose name isnt among the usual suspects bandied about. Or it can be good prep for Advance tryouts, if you have no other developmental option. Of course, there is a risk of injury, too, before Advance tryouts as guys try to prove themselves to scouts/coaches at the next and older levels.

self absorbed expert

here are the answers to your questions.

1. play games with quality players and a few scouts in attendance? How about maybe the 25 games you have played during the High school season, or the Elite league or Elite 2 before the season. Or maybe the Select 15, 16, 17 festivals that go on late March, or the Great 8 festival if you are a Senior. If you haven't been "seen" or good enough to grab a scouts attention by then, maybe its time to re-evaluate your career and spending money to get "noticed." Not everyone is going to play Jr A, D1, or be asked to go to Ann Arbor

2. as far as the money situation. If money isn't an issue for you or your family go for it. Skate all you can, but if you don't get "noticed," with everything else going on; do not be dissapointed.

If you really want to up the level of play and competition and are willing to spend some decent money to get "seen" and get better, go tryout for some Junior A teams. Play against good players from all over the country who are competing to make a team. Not just a bunch of MN high school kids you have played against all year at a weekend recreation tournament.

and 3. Of course everyone has profited at some point of of you and me for hockey. In the end that's what its all about MONEY MONEY MONEY. Anyone that doesn't admit that is just insane. However, there are plenty of options out there for your dollar, and in my opinion this Shattuck fundraiser tournament is NOT one.

Yet, they turn kids away every year and it IS good hockey. And the Elite league is definitely represented among the "scouts" (among others). All for the cost of a couple of sticks.

If you don't want your kid to participate, really, no one gives a damn. But your need to tear it all down seems more indicative of an axe to gring than anything else.

Master Recruiter how many games of teams in the bottom half of the AA rankings did you attend this season? How many Edina, EP, Tonka, Hill Wayzata games have you attended?

You're better off playing in the Gopher State Festival that same weekend, it costs half the amount it does to play in the exposure, and there are probably just as many "scouts" at the Gopher State Festival. I've always had a good experience with it in my playing days and with sending kids from our high school team.
