It seems the past couple years or more, the atmosphere during the games has been pretty blah - other than when goals are scored.
It seems to me I remember that the crowd noise used to always rise in volume as the puck was in each end.... The East fans going nuts when the puck in the H-M zone.... and H-M fans making noise, just because they're stoned out of their gourds..... kidding... I think...
I just don't get that "excitement" sense anymore of a youth tournament... That some of the lustre has been lost...
Does anyone else notice?
If so, is it because the predominant student sections are relegated in the upper deck, and the lower bowl is just full of impartial hockey fans?
Or am I just being dumb.................. again....

I agree with the students not being downstairs part. It takes away from the excitement a little bit. In 08 we secured seats downstairs for almost everyone and I thought we were a rockin crowd

I'd agree the atmosphere isn't what it could be. Part of it might have been the games--I love Roseau, but being 1/8 the size of the opposition does have its drawbacks, the Blaine-AV game was a low scoring affair and AV (one of the better student sections today didn't have anyone in the lower bowlj Blaine's section, meanwhile, is very quiet and was last year too. There wasn't much hope for great atmosphere at Tonka-LVN, and the East fans, who are normally very strong at State, went quiet in the later periods out of nerves. Oh well--let's hope for better tomorrow.

You did not hear the Edina students yelling Sieve? I certainly did. And the Edina students were all over the lower level. How about the fight during the Tonka game in section 204?
Part of the problem is the games are way boring. East/Hill was fun but other than that hey were kind of slow. Blaine/AV was ok, but dragged a bit. Hopefully today will be more exciting.

State tournament
I've been a regular at the tournament since it came back to St. Paul to the Civic Center. It's aways been quiet in there for the most part. The cheering is mostly limited to those school sections. I agree that the students should be downstairs. This tournament is for them - no matter how little attention they pay to the game and screw around.

The atmosphere is horrible...I would say embarrassing for someone to hear about this GREAT state tourney and then go there for the first time. Is it illegal for the X to actually use some music?? Get the kids down where they belong and liven the place up. I assume it's about the money so the guys from Roseau that are 90 and have been coming for 50 yrs can have their seats on the blue line. Doesn't matter...change it because it couldn't be a more boring of an atmosphere if they tried.

I am impressed that there have been 16 replies to this thread, and not one of them is from Body Shots just telling me that I AM DUMB!!!! 
Hoops?? You kinda hit on what I was getting at. If someone was at the games for the first time, it probably just made them feel that it was just a game and not an EVENT.... Maybe it's the music I am missing.... I dunno.. Like I said, it's an EVENT... a party!!!
They had a woman interviewed that worked for Nike, and when she said that she just came from another part of the country and told those people she was coming to Minnesota for the hockey tourney, she said some people had said attending was on their "bucket list."..
And when she was asked what her thoughts were, she kinda paused and her response made me feel like she was fibbing and not overly impressed.

there should be a good atmosphere tonight. The Tonka - Hill matchup is a solid Public vs Private school game. Both schools have enough students to get solid chants going back and forth. Unfortunately I have been to several Tonka games and I haven't seen any leadership in the fans gettting chants going. They barely even watch the game and just expect their team to win. Im hoping being at state changes things a little bit. Its terrible that the bands are getting better seats than the students.

Another thing that doesn't help is the Excel staff. Plenty of them are nice, sure, but a number of them would've done well in the Gestapo. I have been treated like a delinquent high school student by several over the past two years. Trying to simply chat with people in a different East section was an ordeal last night, and even after I got through the lady gave me the Stare of Death on the way back out.
The bands just don't sound as loud at the Excel as they did in the Civic Center, it must be the accoustics. Also bands are smaller and really don't play as much as they used too. Just a few years ago when Grand Rapids made it everyone commented on how great their band was, they played a bunch during the breaks and really contributed to the atmosphere.
Students being upstairs doesn't help and that's changed over the past few years, my seats are adjacent to the school sections and until maybe 2007 those sections had students in them, now they're usually adults ad in a lot of cases adults who don't really care about or understand hockey.
Next weekend when the WCHA comes to St. Paul the atmosphere seems to be better, fans down below, good bands, etc.
