Edina bans "sieving"
I've been an avid hockey fan for my entire life. And since I was about 10, when I learned the "sieve" chants, I've recognized that they are simply a part of the game. After Edina's victory over Jefferson last night, the athletic director for the Hornets banned the "sieve" chants in an effort to clean up the attitude among students.
Now don't get me wrong, our AD is a great guy and I know he is doing his job to promote sportsmanship and respect, but can he really take away this custom we have known and loved for so long?

Also banned at Duluth East.
Any goalie affected by the sieve chant, left hockey long before he got to high school.
And we can't read the paper while you're team is being introduced either.
I am waiting for our AD to require students wear equal colors for both schools competing, and requiring one cheer for the opposing team for each cheer they do for the home team.
I also want the: "we got the spirit yes we do we got the spirit- how bout you" chant banned- implys that the other school has no spirit, which I think is disrespectful:)
Seriously- I'm all for cleaning up stuff thats really in-appropriate, but its gotten a bit silly.
Its called home-ice advantage for a reason.

The reading the paper bit is about as funny as it gets... It never gets old, like the newspaper itself...DuluthHockeyBoy wrote:Also banned at Duluth East.
the word suck(s) has now been outlawed at all white bear hockey games
signs that have any recognition of the other team, taken. along with the SEC ban of any type of sign.
good news on this front is...chants regarding moms, still allowed
I think that cleaning up cheers is a good idea, but not sieve that's too far

Yikes, they've cracked down even further since I left. We pulled off the paper stunt and did the sieve chant when I was there, no problem. Not that they didn't arbitrarily crack down on other random things, though.DuluthHockeyBoy wrote:Also banned at Duluth East.

A surprising number of school administrators, despite spending their days surrounded by high schoolers, have no concept of where to draw the line between things done in jest and things that are actually malicious.

I never liked the "sieve" chant. Not because it's unspotsmanlike, but for 2 reasons.
#1. It takes away from your accomplishment. Can you only score on a bad goalie? Would a good goalie have saved that shot? When I scored (which wasn't all that often), I liked to think it was something that I did rather than what the goalie did.
#2. Sometimes a team (team a) will totally dominate another team (team b), but the score will be tied late in the game. When Team A scores to take the lead, the crowd will start chanting "sieve" when the only reason Team B is in the game is because of the goalie. Doesn't make a lot of sense to me.
I don't know, maybe I'm totally overthinking this, but those are my thoughts.

Re: Edina bans "sieving"
Not out of the ordinary. I witnessed a few games in my hometown in which the school cop let the students "sieve" only twice. My opinion of it really doesn't matter, but I always figured that is what home ice is for. I know that everyone is supposed to show good sportsmanship, but if not only cheering your own team, but also making the opposing team uncomfortable is not a part of the game I guess someone forgot to tell football fans.dangles9 wrote:I've been an avid hockey fan for my entire life. I think youre overthinking this WAY too much. The banning of sieve is absolutly ridiculous. First off, it is in no way shape or form demoralizing to a player. Do you really think a goalie feels bad about being called a sieve? Sieve has been a tradition for decades, and it has the meaning that "our" team is better than "your" team. If you think about it sieve doesn't reference the goalie, it references the team in most instances. IMO it is much worse to call out a player like, "Player X sucks!" stuff like that doesn't belong in HS hockey but sieve, now your taking all the enjoyment out of the game for the students.

I am a student at edina high school and I was sitting in the student section the entire game. From what I know the athletic director only told us to stop after we scored the third goal, and the only reason he could do this is he had an area to watch the game from below by the zamboni doors. There is no way this is permanent and even if he wanted it to be he would have to show up at every hornets game from now on and he would have to sit in the student section. However, many of the students did get pretty mad. haha someone threw a hot dog wrapper or something and hit him at the end and he had no idea who it was, you might think that's mean but i find it hilareous he shouldn't be associated with stuff that is out of school, even if it is high school athletics. it wasn't even played at edina.
