WOONSOCKET --- Speed kills, and on Friday night, the Academy of Holy Angels of Minnesota had more than enough speed to rout Mount St. Charles Academy and hand the Mounties their most lopsided loss in recent memory.
And just as quickly as the Mounties took a 2-0 lead did the Stars come back and take firm control of the game. Junior center Joe LaBate netted a hat trick in the first period for the Stars, who scored four times in each of the first two periods and skated away with a 9-2 victory at Adelard Arena.
The Stars, who hail from Richfield, Minn., own a 5-0 record in the Missota Conference and are considered one of Minnesota’s top Section 2AA squads. And they made their presence felt right after their hosts surprised them with the first two goals of the contest just 1:25 into play.
Less than three minutes after MSC netted its second goal, they tied the score on LaBate’s first two goals. They unleashed the first 10 of their 40 shots in the game just 6½ minutes into play, and they took the lead for good on their 11th shot at 8:11 on a goal by senior Jake Erickson.
They received LaBate’s third goal with 24.2 seconds to go in the period and ended up outshooting their hosts by an 18-10 count in those 15 minutes. And despite taking just 12 shots in the next period, the Stars were still able to put four more shots past MSC netminder Ryan Simoneau.
“That’s a fantastic team,” admitted Mounties coach Dave Belisle. “That was something we hadn’t seen in a very long time. They were fast. They were very fast. And everything else they do – their transition game, their passing, their shooting, the way they fill the lanes – they do very well.”
LaBate, who is the Stars’ biggest player (6-foot-4) and leading goal scorer (15), wasn’t the only player who did some damage. Speedy senior forward Mike Reilly had a shorthanded goal and three assists, and Ryan Reilly, Luke McNamara, Tyler Smith, and freshman Mario Bianchi also netted goals.
“They’re not a big team,” added Belisle. “They’re average-sized, but they’re so fast. They have great handling and they move the puck. It’s on the stick, it’s off the stick, they fill the lane, and the next thing you know, it’s a 2-on-1, our kids are swiveling their heads, and they’re by them.”
The Mounties certainly had the Stars’ heads spinning in the initial minutes. They broke on the board just 17 seconds into play when MSC captain Evan Hoffman reeled in a pass from Nicholas Bennett near the MSC bench, sped past a defenseman, and snapped a shot past Stars goalie Tommy Burke.
Less than a minute later, MSC got whistled for back-to-back minor penalties within 14 seconds of each other, but at 1:25, Derek Deschene managed to flip in a shorthanded goal. He tucked in a pass from Ben Handanyan, who picked off a weak pass by Burke and fed Deschene, who was camped out on the right post.
But 15 seconds later, LaBate capitalized on the Stars’ 5-on-3 advantage, and from that point on, the game belonged to them.
“I guess we caught them with jetlag,” Belisle offered with a chuckle. “We started off fast and got those first two goals, but after that, we just lost total confidence.”
The Mounties will certainly put this defeat behind them, because tonight at 7:30 p.m. back at Adelard is their clash for first place in the Division I ranks with Smithfield High. MSC carries a 7-0 league record into the showdown, while the Sentinels, who are in their first season in the division, are 6-0.
“You have to put this game behind you, shake their hands, and get ready for our game with Smithfield,” said Belisle. “I wish we could have given (AHA) a better game, but the better team obviously won.”
