Ranking AA Sections

Post by greenway1969 »

After the holiday tournament results, the strength of each of the AA sections is a little clearer. Depth was given more consideration than how good the top team in the section is.

1. Section 6: Benilde, Eden Prairie, Hopkins, Minnetonka, and Wayzata. Easily the best section in the state.
2. Section 2: AHA, Bloomington Jefferson, Burnsville, and Edina. I gave this section the nod over Section 5 because of Jefferson's victory over Centennial and Edina's win over Blaine. AHA has been a big disappointment.
3. Section 5: Blaine, Centennial, Maple Grove, and Osseo. This section might be tougher than Section 2 but they have not done as well outside of the NW Conference.
4. Section 3: Yes, Section 3. Apple Valley, CDH, Eagan, and Woodbury. Eagan has been the surprise team of the year. Apple Valley and CDH have some good wins outside of the section.
5. Section 4: Hill-Murray, Stillwater, Tartan, and White Bear Lake. Quality of teams in this section falls off dramatically after Hill-Murray and Tartan.
6. Section 7: Andover, Duluth East, Elk River, and Forest Lake. A slight edge over Section 8 because of its balance.
7. Section 8: Bemidji, Brainerd, Moorhead, Roseau and St. Cloud Tech. Quality of teams really nose-dives after Roseau and Moorhead.
8. Section 1: Lakeville North, Lakeville South, Rochester Century, Rochester John Marshall, and Rochester Mayo. Easy to pick as last as Section 6 was easy to pick as first.

Note the list of teams is in alphabetical order, not based on projected seed for their section tournament.

I think these are pretty solid. It's hard to rank them once you get past the first 3 sections. I think Osseo is going to pull some upsets in Section 5AA, though.

Pretty solid rankings. I thought Minnetonka was a lock to be downtown in March, the way section 6 is I dont know how you can mark them down as such. EP, Benilde, and wayzata are teams that could upset them. My predictions:

1. Rochester Century
2. Edina
3. Woodbury
4. Hill-Murray
5. Blaine
6. Minnetonka
7. Elk River
8. Moorhead
