Winona Winhawks

Post by clutterbuck22 »

Would you say that Winona is a surprise being 7-0 at this point? I didn't hear much about them going into the season. Do you think they can keep this up?

Looking at their schedule, they've played absolutely nobody good and won't the entire season. But they do play in the worst section in the state so there's always the possibility they could make state and have the honor of getting killed in the first round.

As long as you get to state, anything can happen.

I disagree. I would bet my life that the winner of section 1AA will not win state.

Since no one took the time to directly answer your questions, here's my take:

Yes, I'd say they are a surprise
Yes, looking at their schedule, I'd say the could keep this up. The Rochester schools and Faribault are the toughest teams they'll face. Not sure who they face in the Schwan's Cup

They play Northfield today in the first round, and possibly Providence Academy the next round.

Northfield is a decent squad. they have a record of 1-3. but the beat Lourdes who is arguably the best hockey program in Rochestor and lost to Faribault in OT.

Looks like Northfield may be underrated in the section. First they beat Lourdes, then a close loss to Faribault and now a win over Winona.

With northfield loosing only 4 varsity seniors, they now seem to be a upcoming favorite in the missota conference as well as the section. With the missota conference weakening from this past year, conference wins will come to this experienced squad with a promising seeding in the section playoff.

I dont think you can say they are the favorite to win the Missota Conference with Holy Angels in there. but i would look for them to finish in the top of the conference this year. ANd i would not be suprised if they contended for section title. But not for conference over Holy Angels.
This team has seemed like they have already turned a corner from last season

I find it hard to believe Northfield is going to be a contender in anything this season. I watched them play Red Wing last year in sections and I think they were outshot 60-10 with RW sitting their top line for the entire 3rd period. They didn't have any talented players. So what is going on where they can be beating Lourdes.

That was LAST year..
This year, this team is doing well. playing right with the two section "favorites" (Lourdes, Faribault)

This is a new season and a new team. I believe that is why he said "have turned a corner"

northfield did beat a pretty good winona team in the shwans cup and i think red wing and northfield have a big missota conference game coming up in early january so we'll see what has happened since last year and weather or not northfield is the real deal
