Peewee A Red Wing Tournament

Post by Ron Hextall »

A six team round robin tournament with a single cross over game. Basic point system, means that goals against and goal differential come into play in tie breaker scenarios.

Pool A
Red Wing
Red Wing returns a number of players off of last years squad, a team that competed hard but often fell short and out of gas. That experience lead them to an independent schedule this year and they maybe turning a corner slightly as they are starting to learn how to win. Shouldn't have aproblem with Austin, but Highland Central will provide a big test for them early Saturday morning in what should be a game for first place in the pool.

Austin
Austin returns to fielding an A team at the peewee level this year and have struggled out of the gate as they acclimate to the level. Should compete with Red Wing for a little while, but they will struggle later (over 9 goals per game allowed).

Highland Central
Once again a tournament favorite. Coming off a nice victory over White Bear Lake. A dominate performance here should bring more visibility to a team that is no longer lurking off the radar but starting to pop-up more frequently.

Pool B
Farmington
Farmington is an up and comer in D8 and they are starting to broaden their schedule a little bit, close games with Rosemount and Lakeville South and a convincing win against Apple Valley are making people notice. Will have a tough task in New Prague, as the first game of pool play will determine who plays for the championship.

New Prague
New Prague can score, as they have habitually beaten up on teams in D4. But when the defense toughens up their goals drop off quickly. While North Metro is not a top D3 they can be tough. Does staying close in D3 match-ups better for a team they dominating D4? We will see. Their Friday game with Farmington should be the best of pool play. A tie with Farmington puts the North Metro game in front, whoever gives up less goals to them advances.

North Metro
North Metro comes into this tournament with one victory to their credit and some struggles scoring. Playing in a pool with two teams that give up less than 2 goals a game provides them with a challenge that isn't insurmountable, but will be difficult.

Championship
Farmington vs Highland Central
Highland proves it in the final, in a competitive game that the players will be allowed to play the body. The larger Highland team prevails.

Third Place
New Prague vs Red Wing
New Prague takes out the frustration of missing the final on Red Wing.

Consolation
Austin vs North Metro
D3 over D4, nuff said.
