12U B rankings

Post by JohnnyBuck »

It was a big week at the top of the 12U B rankings. #1 ranked Centennial Red lost to #2 Princeton and #6 Eden Prairie black. Princeton then looses to #4 Proctor and #5 North Metro. Who moves to #1? Mahtomedi? Interesting week. Anyone want to make a guess on the top five?

Princeton beat Centennial Red on Mon 2/2 and the rankings didn't change...not sure they will now.

They may not change, but it will still be interesting. I did not see how Mahtomedi did this week? Anyone else. My simple math has them moving up to at least second? Could Mahtomedi beat Centennial Red? They are close to each other, but I don't think they have played yet? Anyone have any opinions on these two teams?

Just a guess:
1. Mahtomedi
2. Centennial Red
3. Proctor
4. Prineton
5. North Metro

All teams are playing good hockey. Wouldn't that be fun if they shook up the rankings a little bit.

I helped with the 12B rankings last year, this seems to happen almost every tournament weekend at this level. I tried several different methods of scoring and never found the perfect one. By the end of the year the only thing I was really sure of was that I knew way to much about U12B hockey teams.

One of the things unique to this level is that the smaller associations that don't skate an a team have a huge ability gap between the top few and bottom few, where the bigger associations tend to have a fairly even team. That puts alot on a couple players for some teams. They are able to beat anyone but if one girl has an off night they can loose to anyone. When your doing the rankings you factor in the records, games you have actually seen, players you know of. I admit I stayed at the arena some tournaments just to see a game with a team or player so I could the get rankings correct. It ends up being almost a part time job.

Then some joker who only volunteers to get thier kids team ranked screws up all the hard work anyway. In the end as much grief as LPH Rankings tend to get they ended up nearly predicting who got to state last year at 12B.

Do you think that the people who "help" with the 12UB rankings are making a fair assessment of all the teams? I'm not quite sure. Especially the smaller associations.

I can only speak for what I did and I really tried to get all the data I could, I had links to all the district web sites, watched tourney results, and all the scores I could find. Not everyone sends thier results to LPH so you only get so much fed to you.

You would be suprised how many teams I was able to see just following my daughters team at games and tourneys. There are a few out state ones that I had to just use game results and compairisons between same opponents but I saw most of the teams at least once.

In the end there is a state champion so the rankings are not like college football. I think most of the volunteers know how much it means to the kids and that is the motivation to put some effort into it. If your an adult and it means alot to you IMO you should take a step back and just enjoy the game.

I am pretty new to all this stuff. I didn't even know they ranked the girls this young, but you are right it does mean something to the girls. So, in all fairness, I didn't mean for my question to be out of line, I just didn't know how it all worked. Now I do!

Sorry my response was a bit more terse than I ment it to be. When your kid is on a team and you watch them work all year its hard not to get really wrapped up in all this stuff. I know some people go a bit overboard at every age but for some reason 12B seems to be a bit of a crazy one. Last year was my first in girls youth hockey so I was suprised by it.

Anyway was just trying to make a point that some volunteers work really hard on those rankings trying to get them right, in the end they don't really matter but hey in the state of hockey we all care way more than we should and are proud of it. Two more weeks and we switch sports and care to much about something else.

Here you go JohnnyBuck - 02/19/09

#1 Centennial Red
#2 Mahtomedi Blue
#3 Proctor
#4 North Metro
#5 Princeton
#6 Eden Prairie Black
#7 Owatonna
#8 Wayzata Blue
#9 Red Wing
#10 Lakeville Red

Thoughts?

Also from D15, where does Alexandria, Pequot Lakes and Park Rapids fit in. They are all doing well within the district. How about outside the district and who's the cream?

Wow! There was some movement. I figured Proctor would move up some and Princeton would maybe move down. I was just suprised Princeton moved down that much. They did beat the #1 Centennial team a couple of weeks ago and lost to Proctor by one when they were missing two of their better palyers. I thought maybe Princeton would be 3 or 4. I also thought Mahtomedi would move to number one as I think they are the team to beat in 12UB. I am looking forward to districts and regions. Looks like Mahtomedi may have the easiest path of the top teams, though.

Have you looked at their district tournament they are the 1 seed but if they win and the 5 seed win that should be a great game with Tartan (5 seed) giving Mathomedi their only loss in district play. District 1 is up in the air with any team beating any team if they show up with their game and the other one doesn't.

Proctor should be #1. They only beat Princeton 2-1 because it was their 2nd game that day. They'd played at Centennial Black only 3 hours earlier and didn't exactly have a cakewalk, coming from behind early and then getting 2 goals in the final minute to pad the score to 6-2. Centennial Red hasn't really been tested except by Princeton. North Metro deserves consideration for the top spot as well.

#2 Maht. Blue and #7 Owatonna (First loss of the season) fell over the weekend, but Owatonna came back to get the 2nd seed at Regions and Maht. Blue is still in the running with games this week.

New Prague - who was my sleeper pick, is out having been beat by Owatonna twice by 1-0 scores.

Proctor beat North Metro 4-0 earlier in the season. Good thing they didn't have to play a prior game that day! LOL
