VFW vs Minnesota Hockey

Post by jancze5 »

Question for the faithful and all knowing (not you Bardown)

What's the connection between VFW hockey and Minnesota Hockey?
Are they connected at the hip with rosters, districts, etc..

Please advise, I'm trying to learn the differences and the likeness

Thank you

A few things I have learned is that the VFW Bantam League is 53 years old, since 1955. That is a long connection of support for Minnesota Hockey. Two separate organizations that are supportive of one another. A Bantam A League sponsored by the VFW. Obviously VFW Posts have changed a lot since 1955 and most aren't as financially fit as they once were. Some VFW Posts are closing so financial support (sponsorship) of Bantam A teams, and their Leagues and Playoffs, isn't what it once was.

Why do you ask?

VFW runs leagues that are cross District boundaries.
They run MH sanctioned tournaments called district and state at the end of February and in March.
They follow MH rules to the T. (except at times some VFW teams may not always be registered as A level 0 not sure if it happens anymore, though).

They have a webpage, but I do not remember it.

I'm all for VFW. I think it is great for teams to play outside there district every once in a while. I just wish they had home and away games rather than Biff Adams and what ever the other rink is.

I've been asking this question for a few years and have never gotten a responsible answer. MH rules state that a player cannot be rostered on more than 1 team, yet the VFW teams do play within the MH calendar year and often overlapping the same league season. How can this be?
If MH allows players to be rostered on a Bantam team and a VFW team, why wouldn't MH allow a player to be rostered on a Bantam team and say a FIRE team also? Either fully open the can of worms or put a lid on it.

I know that in our association they have our bantam A team play in VFW. I'm guessing that is what a lot of associations do so your not on two teams your just playing in two leagues with the same team.

They are not rostered on a VFW team. VFW uses the MH roster.
The only exception that I know of is that in the past some Bantam B teams have been allowed to participate in the VFW district events.
I do not believe this happens anymore, but am not 100% on it.
Everything else is MH including the district and state tourneys. These are treated as invitational tourneys with the fees to MH waived.
