I may scar you forever young man, but the Sioux used to be the "Flickertails"... Yes, an even more lame name for the gopher...
“Flickertail State” refers to the Richardson ground squirrels which are abundant in North Dakota. The animal flicks or jerks its tail in a characteristic manner while running or just before entering its burrow. In 1953 the Legislative Assembly defeated Senate Bill (S.B.) No. 134 that would have adopted the Flickertail facsimile as the official emblem of the state.
Yet, it was and used to be the University of North Dakota Flickertails, no kidding... I have seen pictures of the horrible hockey unis w/ "Flickertails" across the chest...

Lets not be so hasty w/ the lip about the Gophers versus North Dakotas nickname, they had to change it, my god...
What are your thoughts now...

The leaders of the Sioux Indian Tribe signed a document saying that they didn't mind the name, and at the beginning of every game they have a big tribute to the tribe on the big screen so yes "opposed to naming there team after a heritage group whetere they like it or not."Gopher Blog wrote:You mean as opposed to naming their team after the heritage of a group of people whether they like it or not?cajones18 wrote:But seriously who names their team after a Gopher?

Wow.. I knew that North Dakota was the flickertail state.. but never knew that the Sioux were the Flicker Tails. But if they do change their name back to the Flicker Tails (They have to change the name in 3 years) I will offically turn into a Gopher Fan.DmanDad1980 wrote:cajones18 wrote:I've lived in Minnesota for my whole life. Not sure where you get this but the UND administration seem pretty much resigned to the fact that they are going to have to change the name. Sounds like the different tribal leaderships don't care for it. I have read this in numerous newspaper articles from as recent as a few weeks ago.cajones18 wrote:The leaders of the Sioux Indian Tribe signed a document saying that they didn't mind the name, and at the beginning of every game they have a big tribute to the tribe on the big screen so yes "opposed to naming there team after a heritage group whetere they like it or not."

All of this wont matter because the Sioux will never win anything with Finley on their team.Gopher Blog wrote:Not sure where you get this but the UND administration seem pretty much resigned to the fact that they are going to have to change the name.
