I want a vote?

Is it ok for a parent to be a referee at a high school hockey game when his son is playing for one of the teams? Let's hear everyones thoughts.

I wish all teams in section 8A agreed with that logic.

non section games can be reffed by any adult at the highschool level i believe. if its a section game it must be reffed by a nutral party.

True

You are correct, but as a person from the town i wouldn't want a parent to be a referee, it just looks bad. He hasn't officiated any section games, but he has officiated other hockey games, which i think is terrible.

Usually stuff like that won't happen but it will on occasion in greater Minnesota where there are less officals. Referee's tell their association what days they can work and the scheduler then assigns them games, you don't pick what games you do just what dates you can work. Once the schedule comes out and you see there is a conflict you can and should try to get someone to cover that game for you but that's not always possible given all the games on Saturdays; high school boys, girls, and youth, not to mention other commitments the rest of the officals might have. I ended up doing one of my younger brothers games at least 3 times (football and hockey combined), it's not a good situation but sometimes that's what happens and you just have to make do.

I don't know something smells pretty fishy, if you ask me. [-X

I actually think it is only a referee that cannot be a parent. A parent could be linesman, however. Also, I believe it is by conference where they have set crews, not necessarily by section.

You know, if you look at that sentence, it sounds like a putdown of a referee's manliness.

I think any parent referee or linesman of a player participating in the game should excuse himself from being schedule because of the very present evidence of potential conflict of interest.

I don't care what the rules are. TRF should be ashamed of having a dad referee games, it's BS.

Sorry it took so long. It was more than one game, none of which were section games, but it's been most of the non-section games that he has participated.

Used to happen all the time in this area with Tok & Zuelke. I believe they even did some GR - Greenway games back in the day.

I ref football and would excuse myself if I was scheduled to work one of my kids games.

It should be up to the conference to obtain and schedule the refs if it's not being done so already.

If fact, I don't know if I would want any other kids parents in the conference ref'ing my games. Just avoid the conflict of interest.

Can't Help Myself

Post by hiptzech »

Sorry, I can't help myself. I can't believe that no one has made mention that there are plenty of parents ref'ing games. They are the undercover ones that don't wear the actual uniforms, but certainly help in making calls.
