District 8 Playoff Summary (Hastings-Feb 17th to Feb 24th)

Post by frederick61 »

The District 8 playoff tourney draw was posted this week. The tourney sets up this way:

!. Playin games to Hastings are:
Northfield at Farmington
Winona at South St. Paul
Red Wing at Cottage Grove
The home team above has the arena choice. Times are TBD.

2. At Hastings, the playoffs will open on Feb 17 with the first game at 2:30pm. These game are single elimination (loser goes home).
Rochester 2 plays Hastings
Sibley plays the winner of Northfield/Farmington
Rosemount plays the winner of the South St. Paul/Winona game
Rochester 1 plays the winner of the Cottege Grove/Red Wing game

3. The wild card winners advance to play the four teams that have drawn a bye on Feb 18th as follows:
Woodbury plays the Rochester 2 wild card game winner
Lakeville North plays the Sibley wild card game winner
Eagan plays the Rosemount wild card game winner
Lakeville South plays the Rochester 1 wild card game winner.

This draw was determined by the 15 coaches for the above teams seeding the other 14 teams. The teams played an uneven league schedule this year because of the combining of D4/D8 in regular season play. The two Rochester teams, Winona, Northfield, and Farmington played a mixed schedule of D8 and D4 teams and will next year be the D4/D8 East Conference. The remaining teams played a D8 schedule and next year will be the D4/D8 North Conference.

The regular season D8 schedule has not concluded. Regular season play concludes Feb 9th. Because of the early seeding, some key games such as Woodbury/Lakeville South and the performance of Rochester 1 and Lakeville South in this weekend’s White Bear Lake tourney can’t be factored in. On the other hand, there was probably some schedule constraints to have the draw set so the playin games had time to be scheduled and played before the playoffs start on the 17th.

My view is that the coaches did a reasonable job in the seeding given time and circumstances. There was a general favoring of the North teams over the East teams, but as I have said before, the East teams played a less intense schedule. And the coaches have a thankless job this year, a job that no one can win.

The Rumor Mill has this D4/D8 fiasco going in the tank after this season. Anyone else heard anything?
