Bantam to Junior gold

Post by hockey129 »

I was wondering generally what people make after they played at a certain level in bantams when they jump to Junior gold/high school, considering bantam levels b2,b1,a. and junior gold/hs levels jga, jgb, varsity,jv. Could someone also tell me what levels are better than others at the junior gold, and high school levels.thanks.

Depending on how many people you have trying out for high school... Generally your JV team consists of A and B1 bantam players, sometimes B-2 players depending on the school.

Varsity- the ultimate goal
JV- A fairly competetive and high level of play, real good for development
JGA-From what ive seen, most of the kids dont care anymore and just goon it up

I don't agree with your JGA assessment. I would put a JGA team above JV. The skill level is high and most players take it pretty seriously. The top JGA teams will beat some varsity teams.
JGB is more for players that just want to play hockey. But the top JGB teams will beat many JV teams.
I don't see JG being a goon league at all - and I think there is more goonin' it up in JV games. I see JG as a great option for those that have no interest in playing for their HS or get cut for whatever reason. HS hockey is often times not a good option. If you are not on the top 2 lines, you may see little game time. And, there are those pesky high school league rules!

What's with ripping on JG? I'm getting sick of it. In my opinion, there isn't much difference at all between JGA and varsity

JGA

I just went through 3 years of JGA with my son. The goon play is not there because of how the coaches and refs work hard at keeping it a competitive league with good competition. There are very skilled players at JGA but as a team not near as good as Varsity teams. However players I saw move from JV to JGA were not stars. What a great option to have for players that can't make their Varsity team or get cut by a coach for various reasons. (Senior on the bubble, discipline etc.) The best part is kids keep enjoying hockey and get to play 40-50 games with tournaments etc.

I know plenty of varsity caliber players that chose JG over HS hockey. And, there are some very good reasons why a player would do so. You can't make a generalization that these are cut players.

I'm not sure where you are from, but go watch a WBL vs Edina JGA game and let us know what you think. I believe that you will be surprised.
