I'm sure the couple thousand people who will be at the game will care, as will the couple thousand others who will listen to it on the radio - that's not to mention the thousands who will read up on the post game articles in newpapers and online.roll4lines wrote:Who cares.vhsdevils wrote:Should be a good game. I looked through your whopping 9 total posts and obviously your input to this forum has been limited to Warroad and Roseau and your real interest appears to be in girls hockey (perhaps thats where you should stay). The Hibbing/Virginia rivalry has grown to be one of the better ones in northern MN since Hibbing dropped back into class A and has especially escalated in the past 4 or 5 years with numerous closely contested regular season games and huge playoff matchups. This year will be no different. This game will be close as well.
Hibbing will need to get production from somewhere other than the top line of DeCenzo, Jamnick, and Hanegmon. Virginia has two lines that can score and two lines that play very good defensively. If they hold down this line, and nobody steps up on the other lines, Virginia will win.
I watched both of these teams play Rochester Mayo this past weekend and Virginia looked much better than Hibbing did. Hibbing had some chances and the play was actually more even than the 6-1 final indicated, but Hibbing could not score and that top line was kept in check. Virginia seemed to control their game much more and dominated the play at times - including most of the third period. Mayo did not have many real good scoring chances in the game at all. Virginia was definitely better defensively.
That said, you can't base anything off of one common opponent. Hibbing has the better talent in Decenzo, Jamnick, and Hanegmon, but Virginia has more depth (I don't ever remember saying that in this matchup) and I think they play better defensively. Virginia does have a couple of players on the shelf still, one of their top defenseman Troy Grivette, first-line forward Sean Podpeskar, and forward Tony Buccanero did not play last weekend. I don't know when Podpeskar or Grivette will return, but Buccanero is out for the season. Regardless, Virginia is young and as young teams go, they are sometimes up (see wins over Denfeld, Little Falls, and Mayo) and sometimes down (see losses to East Grand Forks, Thief River Falls, and Cloquet) and the same could be said for Hibbing. Which team gains the early momentum could determine this one, and my crystal ball draws a blank - my prediction is that its too close to predict.

Here is a list of the top scorers for each team (5 pts. minimum):
Hibbing (7-7)
DeCenzo 16-16=32
Jamnick 13-19=32
Hanegman 9-10=19
Estey 6-11=17
Virginia (8-6)
Westin 9-14=23
Stoks 12-6=18
Hendrickson 8-10=18
Krebsbach, 7-11=18
Villa, Brian 2-11=13
Judnick 7-5=12
Podpeskar 7-4=11
Lundberg 1-8=9
Grivette 1-4=5

Thought this could be of interest to those in this thread.

He talks about the history and tradition of the Virginia/Hibbing rivalry among other things.

Pretty good game. Virginia pretty much shut down the DeCenzo line. Both Hibbing goals were scored by Matt Dye. Shots ended up 34-27 in favor of Hibbing I beleive as Virginia seemed to go into a defensive shell for most of the third period after taking a 3-1 lead. DeCenzo left the game injured with 1:14 left in the 3rd. Not sure what happened, I didn't see it, but it looked like he may have been favoring a shoulder.
Stoks, Judnick, and Hendrickson scored for Virginia.

k pacman ill like to see your goalie get hammered and then they put the puck in the net then we'll see if you want it to be a goal or not.pacman wrote:Lustig Looked good for Virginia, that Goal that was Dissalowed was a Goal, The Reffing was complete garbage. how can you call a penalty oh hibbing when the virginia guy tripped over himself and took the hibbing player with him and call a holding Penalty on the Hibbing guy is garbage.

I agree that Lustig looked good. Definitely one of his better games.pacman wrote:Lustig Looked good for Virginia, that Goal that was Dissalowed was a Goal, The Reffing was complete garbage. how can you call a penalty oh hibbing when the virginia guy tripped over himself and took the hibbing player with him and call a holding Penalty on the Hibbing guy is garbage.
As for the reffing, I'm not sure it was any worse than its been all year. They've been calling EVERYTHING as minute or obvious as it may be. I've said that before on this board more than once. I'm not a big fan of it.
The disallowed goal maybe should have been a goal, but the whistle blew. The puck was loose and the referee lost it in the scrum. The whistle went, the clock stopped and green light came on, then the puck was jammed in. By rule the call was right. By judgement, perhaps the whistle should not have been blown. In the officials defense, there was about six guys all jammed up in the crease area and they are taught to blow it dead when they lose sight of it.
Hibbing took a couple of dumb penalties in the game as well. I think #12 spent more time in the box than he did on the bench. The bench minor was pointless as well. You gotta stay composed in a tight game, regardless of the officiating.
Did anyone see what happened to DeCenzo? That would be a devastating loss for Hibbing if it is serious.
No Idea on what happend to DeCenzo, hopefully its just a stinger, Hibbing would be hurt, i wouldnt say Badly because Jamnick is a Hell of a Hockey Player and can fill his shoes. The Intensity is already building for the Rematch in Virginia in February, and this game also showed that Virginia can play just as good as they would have with Nico Sachetti.PuckRanger wrote:I agree that Lustig looked good. Pretty good game, kind of sloppy to start out but then it picked up. Reffing wasn't the best, but that is no excuse. I heard Decenzo had some sort of pain in his side and couldn't rotate too well, possibly some sort of rib injury. Nice game for Matt Dye from Hibbing. Hibbing's defense needs some work, hopefully Vechell returning will help them out.
