Roseau (population 2,800)

Post by BoogeyMan »

Did anyone see the story that KARE11 did on hockey in Roseau? GREAT story!

They have three sheets of ice for a town of 2,800 people

One rink is Open 24 hours a day (never locked)

They claim that no skater will pay any amount of money to use the rink

They showed 3 year olds in full gear practicing

Seven state championships

Over 100 years of hockey in Roseau

Keep in mind. Who won the class AA 2006-2007 Minnesota state high school championship last year. Roseau. (Beating another small town of Grand Rapids)

Who's the pre-season # 1 ranked team this year? Roseau!

Who's arguably the best player in the state of Minnesota? Aaron Ness from Roseau.

It makes you wonder what people from Roseau think when they read some of these post?

It makes me think. What are they doing that other associations cannot achieve? Do the math. You would think it would be easy to add 2 + 2. But I can never explain my answer. Compare Roseau to the Twin Cities. (if you can)

Add the number of kids in each association
Add how many rinks the kids have to use
Add annual median yearly income
Add how much the kids pay to play

Now I kind of understand why kids are leaving certain programs.

Forget the movie Hoosiers. Do a movie about the history of hockey in Roseau. After all. This is the State of hockey.

Go Roseau! Repeat?????????

Agreed.
However, if you live in Roseau..........what else IS there?
Still, your point is well taken. Roseau is the biggest sports success story out there, and it gets very little attention. The best part about it is........they don't play Class A!!!! Only the big programs, please!!!!!

yep, and what is failed to be mentioned by the originator of this topic is a lot of hockey in an unstructured setting with a ton of pick-up games.

also missing is the untold hours of blood, sweat and tears of the community volunteers giving back to their association in so many different ways to improve what they do rather than criticize and walk away.

Funny how those things are not brought up here, outside the original newscast

There is no better way ! =D> a very proven formula .......common denominator - not repetition, repetition, repetition, but fun fun fun because they want to and they can....especially at the younger age.

boy you want young kids to to find out how to use their edges, countless hours of tag and pull-away sure does the trick.

The guy said on the broadcast said his grandson was in his skates for 8 hours the other day.....because he was having fun, the ice was available, and he wanted to. You can bet it was not 8 hours of structured repetition.
It was more of 8 hours of trial and error....and oh yeah fun

PS- you trying to suck up to hockey moms eh?

Your movie would probably be boring.

How many communities would use their resources this way? Almost none. People in Roseau are passionate about hockey, much more so than anywhere else in the state. Try getting a city-funded free rink in your town.

Lucia says all the time "Ice Time equals Development". So, looking at Minnesota Made... is it the ice time that is the biggest benefit or the coaching? I think it is obvious that it is the ice time, not anything magic with teaching systems to 8-year-olds.

I had enough ice time as a kid because I skated outdoors all the time. Several college players I know had a sheet in their own backyard even though they lived pretty close to outdoor rinks. Ice time, ice time, ice time. Roseau gives any kid that wants to a chance to skate. A lot.

Is anyone arguing this? You seem so impressed by Roseau. EVERYONE is impressed by Roseau. So what?

Roseau does have a really nice deal! The town is passionate about hockey and gets the bill paid to keep the tradition.

When "he who can not be named", writes, "what are they doing that other associations cannot achieve?" They get the bill paid for! Try getting your city to pay the bill.

I bet your association would love to have you leave for good to MM or perhaps Roseau (sorry Roseau). Most people that know you (within the community) do not want to be on your teams for any sport. Too bad for your kids.

Keep pumping MM and your 16 Squirt style games, while your looking for a Mite Tourney in Alaska.

in reference to the poster you indicate

correction you have to be in an association (register a kid, pay the dues, participate or volunteer time) first in order to be part of an association. Then it is best to refer to it as "our" association rather than "my" association when and if you are ever part of one.

tomASS- I agree! You mention: also missing is the untold hours of blood, sweat and tears of the community volunteers giving back to their association in so many different ways to improve what they do rather than criticize and walk away.

Since all of this has been implemented in your local association. Much of this by you. Please explain to the readers what successful association do you come from?
No doubt all the endless time, money, blood, sweat and tears that you alone have put into your local association. They must be a powerfull force.

1) How's your overall program?
2) How many top ten teams do you have this year?
3) How many State tourney titles do you have?
4) What is the price to play hockey within your local association? (compared to other teams within your district)
5) How many division I players have you developed over the years?
6) How many top players are you keeping around to play in your high school versus leaving for other programs?

I for one want to thank you for the years of dedication. I cannot wait to hear what association you come from. Is it:

Bloomington Jefferson
Edina
Warroad
Greenway
White Bear Lake
Minnetonka
Duluth East
