Tryouts and cuts

Post by Guru20 »

Was wondering if anyone had any knowledgable info on some of the stronger or bigger programs #'s wise in the state.

I am sure some cuts will be made by Wednesday, and more to follow throughout the week.

For instance Edina or Centennial: With obviously a very strong team this year, what will their JV team look like? All 10th graders for the future? Were a lot of Juniors cut? With so many returning players on Varsity, is the JV pretty much last years Bantam A team? How many players actually tried out?

Thanks, keep updating with developments or info.

centennial isn't as good as they normally are at the varsity level, but the numbers they get from the youth program are nuts...im sure their jv will be solid.

Does your programs have the system that NO Senior will play on J/V?

Rephrase that , you make Varsity or you are out?

I would say all programs that I have heard of will not allow Seniors to play on JV. Most schools are even reluctant to keep Juniors on JV, unless they are borderline Varsity and may move up with some injuries, grade issues, etc.

I had a friend ask me what the hockey options were for kids that have been cut from high school programs. Junior Gold was where some of the kids went some number of years ago but that doesn't seem to be much of an option for this kid as he would be on a team of less than serious hockey players. I told them I would see what the people on this board thought were the best options for higher level hockey and skill development.

Suggestions?

The XL hockey league might be a good option.

First of all...tell them its NOT the end of the world. Many great athletes have gone through this and the ones that learned to channel the frustration into training harder & SMARTER have shown that being cut can actually be a gift in the long run. However, at this point (HS level), they cannot afford to blindly train without good feedback and guidance. If making the HS team is TRULY their goal, they will need to find a program or person, such as, FHIT, Total Hockey, or an unbiased coach/mentor, who will not sugar-coat an analysis of where they are at regarding skills, skating, and hockey sense.

Secondly, tell them NOT to blame anyone, or anything for the cut...and to get to WORK!!!

Pucker52,

Have your friend try and hook up with the Coach for Wessey's Boys. They are all about serious hockey and skill development though I don't know if they are done with tryouts. Most of their kids come from private schools.

You will have to find the contact person through metrohockeyleague.com I think Wessesy's Boys fall under the TC district. There is a waiver issue with the home association, but if there is not a team to meet the kid's needs then they you probably have a good shot.

Tell him good luck and to never give up on his goals!

The reason Elk River has seniors playing JV is because of how low the numbers have been since the split. there is usually only about 45 kids that try out.

Was that the right decision for him is more what I'm wondering? Should he ride most of the bench on varsity getting "trained in", or played 60-70 games of A Bantams to get more playing experience and work on fundamentals and skills? I think I might've chosen the A Bantams, but then again I have no clue about this kid, he could be 1st or 2nd liner.

The roster says he's a D-man so im wondering if he really big or what. Good point about staying in bantams bcuz he really could've polished up his skills and been on varsity next year. I would really like some more info on this kid

some info: he has some pretty good size, he will fit in there. He is playing first line with Gleason. Also keep in mind that his brother is on the team. But trust me he made a good decision that was well thought out
