Intense guy! He did a good job and I'm sure the people at Eastview will miss him.wbmd wrote:Eastview coach Mike Gibbons recently left the head coaching position to be an assistant coach at St. Cloud State.

Who does he replace at St. Cloud State?

Neutron
I wouldn't doubt that there are people that aren't upset about him leaving. However, that won't change my opinion of him as a coach. In my opinion I think he has done very well when he had talent and when talent was a little scarce. He's done a very good job and I wish him luck.
I think all coaches, good or bad, make some people angry. It would be impossible to keep everyone happy.
The big question... Who are the going to bring in for the position?? Any names getting thrown around yet?

Gibbons
I am pretty sure the rest of the Lake Conferences coaches are happy to see him go. He hasn't had all that much to work with, especially the last few years,....and has always been competitive, especially come playoff time. He knows the game and can coach it.
He will be missed by most people, and depending on the new coach,......may be really missed. He may not have been fully appreciated in the Eastview program. He has been there since the beginning, and they have not had a comparison. Sometimes we don't know what we have,....until its gone.
He will be a wonderful addition to the Husky program.

Re: Gibbons
Knowlezee, I seem to remember a lot of very confident Eastview types chiming in about their team prior to last year and early on in the season. An arguement can be made that Eastview underachieved last year.Knowlzee wrote:I am pretty sure the rest of the Lake Conferences coaches are happy to see him go. EV achievement
Not sure what fan opinion has to do with achievement,.....aren't many fans "very confident" about therir teams prior to the season? Besides, fan are,....well,....fans.
They were very young,.....at most 3 contributing seniors,.....leading scorers were sophmores and juniors,......goalie was about 5 feet tall and a freshman,....maybe they overachieved? Who knows?
The post was about Coach Gibbons,....not last years team. I have watched him coach over the last 10 years,....he competes, and he can coach.

Re: EV achievement
Part of your contention was that he didn't have much to work with. I believe he had some good talent on that team last year. Especially on the D side of things. Going back and forth with freshman goalie probably wasn't his most brilliant move. The waffling goalie scenario doesn't lead to great confidence in the position. That position needs confidence.Knowlzee wrote:Not sure what fan opinion has to do with achievement,.....aren't many fans "very confident" about therir teams prior to the season? Obviously, he must be a good coach. Otherwise, coach Motsko wouldn't have offered him.
I wish him good luck.
EV last year
Agreed, Eastview did have considerable talent last year,...but were young,....as were many of the Lake teams.
I agree, the goalie situation wasn't handled the best. He should not have given it over to the freshman. He should have at least had them compete all year, and go with the hot goalie at the end. In my opinion, the senior ended up losing all confidence,....and the young freshman couldn't get it done at the HS level,.....just wasn't ready.
Defense should have been a strength, with the most experience from the year before, and a D-1 committed player, but.....had they played better defensively,......maybe the goalie situation would not have been exposed?
Coach Gibbons maybe would handle the goalies differently, if he could do it over. Handling goalies, like many coaches, may not be his strength, but overall,......he is a very good coach. We will miss his intensity in the Lake conference.

last year
or maybe, knowing they were young, he was setting up a little experience for this year... when his talent was more matured, more experienced, and more ready.
Just a thought...

You may be correct.
