Midwest Selects
I agree.....totally a waste of time and money. The teams sometimes are filled with marginal talent. It is just a money maker for the people that run the team.

I know I don't get any $ for putting a team together... Maybe I should get a better agent to negotiate these deals!MNHOCKEY1 wrote:I agree.....totally a waste of time and money. The teams sometimes are filled with marginal talent. It is just a money maker for the people that run the team.

I should try to find the roster from the team we had in there a few years ago... Very good team, and Quinn/Walser were involved with that group... It's been a few years since then. I have watched a bit of this event since then, but not much last year I don't think. So, I probably can't really comment as to how the U19 level was, or even any lower age classifications...
The Jr Whitecaps may work with the Schwan Blues to see what players want to play in this event. Some Jr Whitecap players will be at U18 Nat'l camp then. We'll see how it all ends up. At $1200 per team or about $75 per player for a team of 9F, 6D, & 2G I guess it's probably pretty reasonable as far as leagues/tourneys/etc. go ($15-20 per game).
Somewhere it was discussed that too much games and not enough skill building is being done. Yes, I agree, but... I also don't think that playing games is bad and it probably keeps some players from burn-out if all they did was train 24x7 w/o anything that was more "fun" or game-like (not everyone loves to train 24x7). I also think many players are over-coached, but I know not everyone would agree with me on this either...

Re: Midwest Selects
And what selects tourney isn't a money maker for the people that run the tournament. I think all selects tournaments have marginal value. If you have the money its a fun diversion. If money is tight I would bypass any and all selects tournaments and invest in a skills clinc.MNHOCKEY1 wrote:It is just a money maker for the people that run the team.

For most of the spring/summer Trunzo played for the Icecats "Elite" (Reilly team) but for the International Cup she may have been also rostered for the Wild (?). Shields-Nordness has normally played for the Pink Panthers. Easy to see why the results of these tournaments are hard to predict, with key players (such as these two) moving around.ghshockeyfan wrote:WILD's Trunzo looked outstanding in this tourney and Walser Blues' Shields-Nordness (sp?) did too. Very impressive but not surprising.

Yes - I would say that the teams weren't the teams that you may normally think of even with their recently posted rosters for this specific event. Many kids miss game-to-game, or show up pretty worn-out with a million other things going on right now mainly fall sports & training, etc. + jobs (yes some kids actually work) + some are packing/heading off to college, etc., etc. One day we had 8 skaters and the next only a couple more but were different players, and I was impressed that some of these teams were able to get as many players there as they did, but then I also have to remember that most other teams weren't thrown together in the last week or so prior to the event so that may have helped a bit for planning purposes... There was a lot of great talent there though and some of the play was worth the drive to watch IMHO...MNHockeyFan wrote:For most of the spring/summer Trunzo played for the Icecats "Elite" (Reilly team) but for the International Cup she may have been also rostered for the Wild (?).
