The Phalen Rec. Center in Saint Paul will be awarded a outdoor inline & refrierated ice rink. Phalen Rec. is in the Saint Paul Johnson area and will help young players to have a skating rink even if the winter months are mild just like the oval does in Roseville.

This is also happening in Zimmerman, MN with the equipment donated by Krause Anderson from the Columbia arena tear down.

I was at the hearing at Phalen playground on Wesnesday the 25th and it was afull house. There were very many good questiones brought up and answered and all were favorable to the rink being put in. As far as it's location yes one ball field will be lost it being the one right by the building. The rink will run East to West along the path. A concrete slab will be layed a little bigger than what the rink will be than a layer of class 5 gravel will be put over that and finally pads that will freeze the water. The unit will only be needed when the days are not cold enough. Through a study the city did it is cheaper this way than to maintain a regular outdoor rink.

Doesn't anyone out there think the Super Rinks have enough? I keep hearing all this about Herb liked this and Herb liked that but it is always metioned with the suburbs and the Super Rink.

But seriously i'm sure it's easier to maintain at a facility that has all the staff and equipment already...and the super rink serves a wide geographic area.
It's also supported by a lot of associations pooling funding for these expansions.

Johnsonpres, Its not a bad move to build the rinks where the kids are. And the Brooks family decided this facility used by thousands of kids was the right location for the training center. No one would believe that Herbs first choice wouldn't have been a St. Paul location, but as you know Herb was about numbers.

Every year many posters on this board lament the decline of the city programs. No one seems to have an answer to stop or reverse the bleeding.

And there isn't nearly enough soccer fields for my liking so I would agree with you there should be equal number of rinks to soccer fields .....that way it's even better for soccer and hockey
