Detroit Tiger @ Minnesota Twins (July 17-19)
Tigers lead the Twins by 6 games in the AL Central.
From twinsbaseball.com:
Tuesday, July 17 Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome | 7:10 PM CT
Nate Robertson, LHP (5-6, 4.92)
Tigers (54-36) @ Matt Garza, RHP (1-0, 0.00)
Twins (49-43)
Scouting Report:
Tigers: As far as No. 5 starters go, Robertson has been pretty good this season for the Tigers, giving the club adequate innings since a trip to the 15-day disabled list to cure a "tired arm." He has gone at least five innings in three starts since his return, including a 6-5 win over the Red Sox on July 8 in his final start before the break. It was Robertson's first victory since May 19.
Twins: Garza made quite the debut in an outing against the White Sox, throwing six shutout innings. The right-hander displayed a better ability to mix in his breaking pitches with his dominant fastball. And it was enough to earn him a spot in the rotation -- for now. Garza will have to show the success can continue and he'll have another tough test in his next start against the Tigers. Garza allowed four runs to Detroit over 4 1/3 innings in his only career appearance vs. the Tigers.
Wednesday, July 18 Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome | 7:10 PM CT
Andrew Miller, LHP (4-3, 3.35)
Tigers (54-36) @ Johan Santana, LHP (11-6, 2.60)
Twins (49-43)
Scouting Report:
Tigers: Miller, a rookie who opened up the Tigers' rotation in the second half, is coming off a solid but hard-luck outing against the Mariners. He allowed six hits and two earned runs in a 3-2 loss. Miller was a victim of a controversial call in the fifth inning that allowed the Mariners to score the go-ahead run. But he wasn't as efficient as needed, throwing 98 pitches in five frames. Miller was the losing pitcher on June 30 against Minnesota, giving up six hits and six runs in five innings.
Twins: Against the A's on Friday, Santana pitched a gem and earned his fifth consecutive win in as many starts. Santana tossed seven scoreless innings and allowed just four hits while striking out eight. In Santana's last contest against Detroit, on June 29, he allowed just one earned run over six innings while winning his ninth game of the season.
Thursday, July 19 Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome | 12:10 PM CT
Jeremy Bonderman, RHP (10-1, 3.50)
Tigers (54-36) @ Scott Baker, RHP (4-3, 5.43)
Twins (49-43)
Scouting Report:
Tigers: Bonderman focused on strikes in his last start, on Friday at Seattle. He threw 87 pitches, 62 for strikes, striking out five and walking none. In his last outing against Minnesota, on July 1, he beat the Twins for the first time in five career starts with a dazzling performance. He went eight innings, allowing six hits and no runs while striking out seven in a 1-0 victory.
Twins: Baker began the second half with a strong win against the A's. He lasted six innings and gave up just two earned runs on five hits and a walk while striking out three. In his last outing against the Tigers, Baker allowed just one earned run on three hits over eight innings, but he got the loss because the Twins could only give him one run in support.

I can't handle it when the Twins lose 1-0. It makes it so much worse when the run is UNEARNED.

Score one for packerboy, they needed to hit the boofin' ball last night. When you get a start like that from Garza the hitters need to come through and they choked.
Packerboy had a thoughtful, witty and informative rant in one of the other threads about Ryan's signing Ponson and Ortiz, two bargain basement pitchers, rather than going with the young guns. The only hitter he signed was Jeff Cirillo and he's made no effort to replace Rondell White. Maybe at the beginning of the season it was reasonable to expect Punto and Bartlett and others to repeat their fine stats from last season, but as it became clear that these guys were not Ryan has continued to stay the course. That course has them sailing into third place and I'd say Ryan's lack of movement in getting a hitter is more egregious than signing Ponson and Ortiz.
