Apparently my point of a fair tryout is outside your vocabulary...
Welcome to AAA hockey. There is nothing fair, and nobody owes you a thing. The sooner you come to grips with that, the more enjoyable it will be. It is what is both great and bad about business in an open market.
Most 02 AAA players are going into their 3rd year, so your player is behind the curve a bit. But if your player is clearly elite talent the top teams will make room for him. There are still elite level 02's playing for 01 teams.
If not an elite player, there are still many quality options available at that age. I would recommend being patient with the process. My guess is, fairly or not, you have already been labeled as a nut job dad...and you don't want that for you player.
Just put him in the best position possible and stop for ice cream after the warm spring / summer games and it will all work out.
Thanks for the "Nut job" warning, but I have not spoken one word to anyone but you guys here in the forum. All I'm doing is getting some input from people here.
Truly it is not as dire as I may be coming across. As I said, I don't even know the out come. He may have made the team.
To recap and to maybe add a little more information:
My kid tried out- had a great tryout. Was invited back the second day. In both scrimmages for the second half of each tryout, he had two goals. Apparently they put most or all of last year's team up against the tryout kids. The game score was 4-2 the first day and 6-3 the second day. Now the question is whether my kid is better then the NEW (not apart of the team last year) Selects kids who did not grace us with their presence at tryouts.
Now before I continue, please understand that I'm taking in everything you guys have said and understand that there may be other circumstances for picking a player.
1) I understand that the coach may feel they have a team and just need one or two players.
2) I understand that it may be a "who you know and who you ____ situation.
3) I understand that there is a AAA hockey community and it can be as much about the family friends, beer drinking buddies, hot moms etc...
4) I understand that the coach may have promised a Selects kid a spot on the team. I also understand that the coach may have promised a selects kid's parents a spot on the team because the mom is hot.
Now for the thread recap:
My questions were originally based on information about Selects. How you get on the team etc...
Apparently the reasons listed above about AAA teams are the same for the "Selects".
Then my follow up questions revolved around my son's experience with a AAA try out and the fact that he may lose a spot for any of the above reasons... including also that the Selects kids may be REALLY good. I understand all of that.
What I'm inquiring about is... I guess the the "old days" where a kid was expected to tryout to make a team. What I'm hearing is that those days may be over.
Also that I'm "Out of touch".
I have learned that in AAA kids don't need to tryout. "MN Selects" can be more then just picking the best players. I logically have to laugh and say that "Selects" should change their name to "Favorites".
Hockey is fun so:
There really isn't a problem we can't deal with. Some of you who are insinuating I may be a nut job parent, really don't know me that well. The coaches don't even know me. I don't try to weasel my kid on a team etc.. and I don't complain. I would prefer that skill and a good attitude gets my kid on the team. I will continue to hold to this philosophy.
Again, all this thread was for is to gather information and ask some questions based on my experience with AAA, find out what the big deal is about Selects and just have some discussion.
Have a wonderful day and thanks for the input.
