Re: 2006 Coaching Vacancies
Bemidji has been without a head coach for a while if memory serves correct.

He stepped down (?) part way through the season and the team was co-coached by the 2 assistants the rest of the year.
www.rebelhockey.com

Re: 2006 Coaching Vacancies
This is true on Bemidji.

<a href="http://info.bemidjistate.edu/sports/spo ...

Women's Ice Hockey
Bruce Olson steps aside as Bemidji State head hockey coach
DATE: Dec. 19, 2005
Jim Ingman and Sis Paulsen named interim co-head coaches for remainder of 2005-06 season

BEMIDJI, Minn. - Bemidji State University Director of Athletics Dr. Rick Goeb today announced that Bruce Olson has stepped aside from his responsibilities as BSU’s head women’s ice hockey coach, effective immediately, to pursue other interests. Assistant coaches Jim Ingman and Sis Paulsen will be named interim co-head coaches for the remainder of the 2005-06 season.

“We appreciate the efforts Bruce has made during his four years in Bemidji to develop our program,” Goeb said. “We wish him well with his future endeavors.”

• Bruce Olson
Olson was in his fourth season as head women’s hockey coach at Bemidji State, where he had posted an overall record of 27-80-13. Introduced as the third head coach in the history of the BSU program on Aug. 16, 2002, Olson departs as BSU’s all-time leader in coaching victories (27) and games coached (120).

During Olson’s tenure at Bemidji State, he coached the program’s first All-WCHA pick, Amber Fryklund, who ended her playing days as the lone 100-point scorer (122) in school history. Olson also coached a program which was strong academically, as Côté and Guylaine Haché were each named WCHA Student Athlete of the Year — Haché in 2002 and Côté in 2003. Additionally, Côté became just the second student-athlete in BSU history to be recognized on the College Sports Information Directors of Ameria Academic All-America Team in consecutive seasons, as she was a second-team honoree in both 2003 and 2004.

Olson came to Bemidji State after a highly-successful two-decade career at the high school level in North Dakota and Minnesota. Following a four-year playing career at Minnesota, Duluth from 1975-79, Olson took over the boy’s program at Minot (N.D.) High School. He directed Minot to a pair of North Dakota state runner-up finishes in 1985 and 1987, and was the 1987 North Dakota Coach of the Year.

In 1991, Olson left Minot to take over the varsity boy’s program at Roseau (Minn.) High. During his run at Roseau, Olson earned Minnesota 8AA Coach of the Year honors twice (1995-96 and 1998-99), was named State Coach of the Year in 1998-99 and led Roseau to the 1999 state championship. Olson’s 1999 state championship team was the sixth state champion in Roseau history. His 1999 roster included current BSU junior forward Luke Erickson, a 2005 Pre-Season All-College Hockey America selection, and eventually won state Academic Champion honors.

• Jim Ingman
Ingman is in his fifth season as an assistant with the BSU women’s program and has the longest tenure of any coach, head or assistant, in the history of the program. He came to BSU in 2001 with current St. Cloud State head coach Jason Lesteberg as goaltending coach. Ingman continues to oversee goaltenders and coordinates the program’s recruiting efforts.

Under Ingman’s guidance, Anik Côté ended her career in 2004 as BSU’s all-time leader in goals against average (3.50) and save percentage (.893); current senior Jill Luebke (Neenah, Wis.) is fourth all-time in goals-against average and save percentage; and helped develop 2005 Western Collegiate Hockey Association All-Rookie Team netminder Emily Brookshaw (Webster, Wis.).

Ingman also helped Lesteberg found the NCAA Division III women’s program at Wisconsin Stevens Point. Ingman organized the team as a club program in 1998 and helped oversee its elevation to Division III status for the 2000-01 season. The inaugural Stevens Point program went 13-13-1, including a perfect 10-0-0 against other first-year Division III programs, and saw goaltender Diane Sawyer named First-Team All-Northern Collegiate Hockey Association.

• Sis Paulsen
Paulsen is in her second season with the Bemidji State program and also serves as BSU’s head women’s softball coach. She joined the BSU coaching staff after a standout playing career at Wisconsin, where she was a four-year letterwinner and three-year captain. Paulsen remains the Western Collegiate Hockey Association’s all-time leader in points scored by a defenseman (42-88=130), is third on Wisconsin’s career scoring list and is tied for third all-time for career games played with the Badgers (136). She was named First-Team All-WCHA in 2000 and was a second-team all-conference selection in 2003.

She served as a student assistant coach for Wisconsin in 2003-04 and was co-head coach of the USA Hockey Girls Select 14 Team in the summer of 2004 before joining the Bemidji State staff.

Paulsen currently oversees BSU’s defensive corps and its special teams.

“I am confident in the abilities of Coach Ingman and Coach Paulsen and know they will lead our women’s hockey program with integrity and enthusiasm,” Goeb said. “I take great pride in the accomplishments of the athletics programs at Bemidji State and will continue to promote the important qualities a student-athlete should acquire in order to become a productive citizen. I am certain our women’s hockey program is being led by quality people who will provide excellent leadership.”

Olson will remain under contract with Bemidji State University for the remainder of the academic year. A national search to fill Bemidji State’s head coaching vacancy on a permanent basis will be conducted on a timetable to be announced in spring of 2006.

--bsu--

High School hockey program is in replacement mode on its coaching staff.

Since the hockey season ended, Warriors girls head coach Scott Knutson and boys co-head coach Dennis Fermoyle have resigned. For both, time - or lack of the same - led to their departures from the hockey coaching ranks.

"What it boiled down to was that my classroom responsibilities, combined with being a co-head coach, had become just overwhelming," Fermoyle said. "The first season I did it, I thought it was really hard, but that maybe it would get easier in the second season. But I saw that if I kept doing all this, I'd become burned out.

"I've been a hockey coach all my adult life. To give that up, it's really hard."

Knutson resigned for family time.

"I have two young boys who play hockey," Knutson said. "It's tough for me when they're playing and I'm somewhere else, not getting a chance to watch them play. There's just not enough time to do everything. But when I took this job, I told (Warroad's administrators) it would be for a short term."

Knutson spent 12 seasons as a boys assistant hockey coach at Warroad before heading the girls program the past two seasons. After taking the Warriors to the 2005 section final, Warroad won the section championship this winter to earn its first state berth. Warroad finished second at state.

Fermoyle has been a hockey coach for 32 years, the past 17 at Warroad. After 15 seasons as an assistant, he was co-head coach with Albert Hasbargen the past two seasons. Warroad won the 2005 Class A state title and lost to Thief River Falls in the 2006 section title game.

"I might be the only coach in Minnesota high school hockey history to have a winless and an undefeated season," said Fermoyle, whose 1979-80 Mountain Iron team was 0-17-0, while the 2004-05 title team went 29-0-2. "I've been rich and I've been poor from a coaching standpoint. The undefeated season was much more fun."

Wow....That Warroad job would be nice. BUT, you can also see that Holly is now graduated so unless someone else moves up for hockey; it might be a little more difficult up there.
www.rebelhockey.com

With the opening at St. Cloud - and the other assistant, etc. positions that are open at the college level, expect the shock wave to ripple through all ranks of Women's/Girls' Hockey...

The semi-quiet off-season to date should become more volatile due to this.

Re: As of 4/4
Having spent some time up north last season, I have to say I really enjoy the hockey community they have in the northwest corner of the state and what they are able to do with so few (notwithstanding Holly Roberts). The community spirit for hockey and rivalries are just awesome. I'm sure everyone thought it's now or never this past year, so after a long season of high expectations it's no surprise they are worn down. Coaches, like hockey programs, inhale and exhale from year to year. I'm sure the Warroad folks would have preferred that both coaches didn't step down, but rest assured there is no shortage of qualified hockey people from that area who can pick up the torch.

Warroad schuttlebutt
Heard that Izzy was going to throw his hat in the ring for the Girl's head job; even heard that brother Mike has called the newest school board member to try gain his support. Tiger should have saved his breath. ...Here's some of the low-down: I guess four of the current player called the newest school board member and emphatically stated that if Izzy Marvin was named head coach they would quit - that is almost 30% of the team. Period exclamation point.<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/grin.gif ALT=" >D"> I also know that of the three men who will decide the position 2 will have to die before Izzy gets even a sniff. We'll see what happens three years from now but with those board members having at least two years remaining he hasn't a prayer until then. You may see a women at the helm or on the staff for the first time in Warroad Hockey history before Izzy gets his chance....

what are the chances of someone outside warroad getting the job?

Re: Warroad schuttlebutt
Probably not good. They are cutting many teachers and programs due to declining enrollment so that hiring someone new to come in to teach and coach is probably not possible.

Mankato West Assistant
Is Paul Ostoff not going to assistant coach? He was a selects head coach, involved with OCDP, seems like a good guy, too.

Re: Mankato West Assistant
Uncertain as to the posting for Mankato - just saw this on the MSHSL site.

I may be wrong, but i would say that so far it's been far busier at the college level than the hs girls in MN. More will change i'm sure unfortunately, but some of this may depend on how the college jobs play out. I know that at least a few HS coaches are in for those jobs at the college level, and many speculate that more are as well.

Re: Mankato West Assistant
Don't know if it's been noted here or not...or in the Lesteberg thread, but Bemidji State is also advertising a search for new head coach.

Is there a "problem/concern" with St. Olaf? Good school or not?
www.rebelhockey.com

Re: St. Olaf opens again
Not sure..
Four coaches in four years would be a concern though. Seems to be in 3rd or 4th place over that time. I know Oseicki was told that they were going to build a rink that never was built. So facilities may be an issue? Recruiting must be tough with their standards and cost also.

Re: St. Olaf opens again
Women's hockey is at the bottom of the athletics totem pole at St.Olaf. They have a great head coach in place right now - John Bazakini and two great assistants. The coaches know hockey and know how to coach hockey. The players like and respect them. It is a mystery to all connected with Olaf hockey that the AD has not hired these coaches.

Re: St. Olaf opens again
I'm sure they have to go through the proper hiring practices. if they don't, it can prove problematic...
