MN High School Girls on WCHA Teams
As evidenced by the news reports from this weekend's college games, Minnesota players are helping some of the WCHA teams right out of the gate. Gigi Marvin stands out on the U of M team for her speed. The South St. Paul "crew" as they were called in the news columns helped Mankato win their first game against a top five team. Wisconsin in their first game did not fair as well against UMD.

I noticed that Lindsey Block didn't play much as a freshman against the No. 1 rated St. Lawrence team, and the Canadian goalie played in place of the two Minnesotans on the team, Kim Hanlon and Natalie Lamme.

It will certainly be an interesting year to watch the WCHA without the Olympians. The teams will be more equal in skill level and we will see if the Minnesota players who were goal scorers in their high school careers will rise to the top against more overall talent than they competed against in high school. The true goal scorers will become evident.

Gigi looked / played fantastic in both Gopher games over the weekend. No exaggeration in my opinion she immediately appeared to be one of the teams top forwards. For such a drastically changed team I think it's worthwhile mentioning that a group of last seasons rookies also played very well...Jenelle "flipper" Philipczyk, Liz Palkie, Anya Miller & Erica McKenzie. Saturday night they ran into a very strong team in St. Lawrence (ranked #1 in division I) played hard...good effort but couldn't get it done. All new line combos in this first weekend and I think with more playing time together they'll all be very good lines. Lindsay Block, on the fourth line will probably get less ice time initially...like Whit Graft last season. Whitney got more ice time this weekend.

I was glad to see Maggie get two in her D-I debut vs. Mercyhurst...not too surprising to me. She was THE one I really hoped...well, I'm getting over that now. Best of luck to her and her teammates. Hope Ashley & Felicia can get into the lineup soon (noticed they weren't in the collegehockeystats.com box scores).

Looking forward to the SCSU & UW and all MN players contributing to their "new" WCHA teams.

Edit: I think F. Nelson did play Friday but not in the Saturday rematch. Didn't see A. Young in the lineup either night...understand she's injured.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p100.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... ookyone at: 10/9/05 8:25 pm

Former Minnesota HS Players
brooky, I think it was the other way around on Nelson -- played Sat, not Fri. Wisco had Kayla Hagen skating with their top forwards, Bauer and Sharon Cole (a former Bloomington Jeff. product) for much of the weekend, but not by the end of Sunday's contest. I believe Keseley was on an all rookie line -- probably their 3rd. Tawni Mattila had at least an assist for UMD, and Drazen continued her fine play.

As far as playing time for Lamme and Hanlon, Chartier looks really, really good in front of them.

Re: MN High School Girls on WCHA Teams
I was at both the Friday & Saturday games. The main thing to be worked on for the Gophers is spelling:

T E A M

Note there is no "I." They have a great collection of individuals and they played that way too much, especially Saturday against the better opponent.

Yes, they have a ton of talent. Yes, it was the first weekend so there is plenty of time for improvement.

Individual Play
Stir',

You are correct, and the longer Saturday's game went, the worse it got. The seniors were as bad as anyone. Perhaps they've heard for so long how they were going to have to do more with the stars gone, that they tried to do too much individually.

In a way, it is good to get that lesson early. The coaches now have plenty of film to point to and a good motivating factor in the loss. I think with additional practice time to work on their breakouts and power play, plus get accustomed to their linemates, they should do fine.

Right on the mark ARM in all respects! Glad I wasn't the only one who could not see the Emperor's new clothes! <wink>

Re: "Speedy Maverick"
Just a heads up for anyone in the area...the UW Badgers travel to All Seasons arena in Mankato this weekend for a series with the MSU-M Mavericks...with players like Keseley, Hagen, Fisher, Nelson & Young strutting their stuff on the ice. Definitely worth the price of admission if you're in the neighborhood IMO.

I agree.

Re: "Speedy Maverick"
Are all of the above players off the I.R? Some were banged up last week.

Re: "Speedy Maverick"
Yeah, I don't know 'bout that for sure. I know Young & Nelson have missed games. The box score has them both playing last Friday but not on Saturday...so can't say for sure. Both Hagen & Keseley appear to have played in Sunday afternoons game for UW according to the box so it appears they're healthy. I think Maggie Fisher has played every game so far for the Mavs...again, looking at the box scores, steppin' right in and playing well in D-I.

LW 5 Angie Keseley 1-1-2 6/+2

From today's UND vs. UW box score.

Also, Felicia Nelson in the MSU-M lineup tonight. Scores two goals in a 2-2 tie with Ohio State.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p100.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... ookyone at: 10/29/05 12:56 am

Re: "Scoring Badger"
Felicia Nelson & Maggie Fisher each score two goals in a 6-2 (I think) win over the Ohio State Buckeyes today. Some thought the SSP girls could possibly struggle in NCAA division I in musings during the recently concluded off season...May be time to reconsider such thoughts.

Quote:
Rookie of the Week
Felicia Nelson, Minnesota State

Nelson, a freshman forward from South St. Paul, Minn., had her finest weekend in a Maverick uniform so far in her young career, helping lead MInnesota State to a three-point weekend at Ohio State. Friday, she tallied two goals, including one on the power play and the game-tying goal in the 2-2 tie. The following afternoon, she again scored twice, including the game winning goal, and dished out her first career assist. Nelson finished the weekend with five points coming on four goals and one assist.

Others Nominated: Michaela Lanzl, Minnesota Duluth; Angie Keseley, Wisconsin

These WCHA rookies are tearin' it up pretty good. Re: MN High School Girls on WCHA Teams
Goals for both MSU's Felicia Nelson & UW's Angie Keseley (of the players / results I'm aware of) in games yesterday contributing to wins for their respective teams. I watched the Gopher / Badger game and thought Angie looked up to speed and right at home in the D-I game. I s'pose that's fairly obvious for all players mentioned when looking at their stats at this early stage in their collegiate careers. All certainly look to be establishing themselves as long term impact players in the WCHA. For Keseley, I believe last nights goal was her 6th of the season.

Re: MN High School Girls on WCHA Teams
From Gophersports:

Quote:
Hanlon had a spectacular night in goal for the Gophers. Hanlon stopped nine shots in the first, six in the second and six in the third for a three-period total of 21. It is the fourth shutout of the season. Hanlon has now started in six games and has recorded four shutouts.

I'm relatively certain at least a few fans here know or remember Kim from her high school career. She has played extremely well right from her first start. Sure glad to have her at Minnesota.

Re: MN High School Girls on WCHA Teams
From the WCHA website and the weekly Player of the Week recognitions, this for last weekend:

Quote:
Rookie of the Week
Megan McCarthy, St. Cloud State
McCarthy, a freshman forward from Eden Prairie, Minn., had a three-point weekend as the Huskies posted a road sweep at North Dakota. Re: MN High School Girls on WCHA Teams
For the heck of it, scroll down to the goaltenders to see who sits atop the nation statistically. It's Gopher Kim Hanlon with some very impressive numbers. Having watched her play in all her starts I can vouch that her stats are definitely an accurate indicator of her performance in net this season. She may not have the minutes of some others but I'm confident watching her play she would still be at or very near the top if she had gotten starts from the beginning of the season...no doubt in my mind.

<a href="http://www.uscho.com/stats/index.w.php" ...

Many familir names from this seasons WCHA freshman class are really playing well and making major contributions to their teams success. Re: MN High School Girls on WCHA Teams
Yeah, if I recall Johanna was also named either HE Rookie of the Week or D Player of the Week at least once earlier this season.

I've been reading thoughts / comments of New Englanders regarding up & coming HE programs in another women's hockey forum. Many of those see BC as a program definitely on the rise, while a few others apparently aren't as convinced the Eagles will keep pace with other HE teams they believe are making major strides (BU, UNH, Maine). I'm inline with those who believe BC is on the way to becoming a strong competitor with the top HE teams...with the fellow Minnesotan's about to join Johanna at BC, and some other excellent recruits from elsewhere. I've also gathered that BC is currently at a slight disadvantage to other programs regarding numbers of available scholarships...which may, hopefully will change. Nevertheless, it's going to be fun for this fan keeping an eye on how Johanna, Allie, Anna & the Johnson girl fare (sorry, can't recall her first name at the moment) at BC and subsequently how the Eagles fare in HE the next few seasons. Don't forget, They'll also be battling an old nemisis / teammate when playing the Huskies of NU from time to time. That should be interesting as well.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p100.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... ookyone at: 3/8/06 1:48 pm
