equipment
I'm looking for free (or nearly) hockey equipment of all kinds. Should I just run a post on freecycle.org? Do you have any ideas? Also, is most protective gear like elbow pads ok in the wash machine?
"Dream as if you'll live forever; Live as if you'll die today." --James Dean

Re: equipment
Man... you are a nerd! Don't put your hockey equipment in a regular washing machine!!

Re: equipment
We have a family in our town that put their hockey equipment in their dishwasher to clean. I have not tried it but they say it works. Anyone tried that method?

Re: equipment
not sure why people feel the need to wash their equipment at all. yeah, yeah.. I know the smell. Growing up in the 80's and early 90's we never would even think about washing our stuff. It just doesn't need to be done. Wash your body when your done with practice or games, not your equipment. Dishwasher???

Re: equipment
Yep, dishwasher is what I was told....which really made me curious if others have used that method.

We just lay the gear out, put some spray on it and let it dry....still has a lingering odor but does not knock you over or anything!

Re: equipment
Hopefully that spray doesn't give your daughter a rash.

I've heard of people using the big industrial washers at the laundromats before. Not sure how it worked, but the girls smelled better!

There are some places that will clean your equipment, place called CleanGear in Duluth does it. Fairly expensive but does a great job.

I know that with a lot of people it's not so much the smell but the bacteria and mold that grows! Of course, we always used the hose it down and hang it on the line effect and we didn't turn out half bad.

Re: Equipment
Yes a washing machine works! We have a large machine that does clean the equipment just fine. Gentle cycle works the best. Then you need to air dry it. I do this at least a half dozen times a season.

Re: Equipment
I would highly suggest cleaning your gear. Washing machine, dishwasher, industrial washer, etc. all work - but now they have specific cleaning equipment at some area rinks & sporting goods stores. I believe Eagan Rink has one:

<a href="http://www.ci.eagan.mn.us/upload/images ...
<a href="http://www.cityofeagan.com/live/page.as ...

Wash Your Gear, It Stinks!
Does your sports gear stink? We can help. The presence of microbial organisms like blood, proteins, mucus, bacteria, fungus and mold on sports equipment is what causes the bad rash, skin irritations and that awful smell athletes experience from sports wear. You can clean your child's jersey at home, but how do you clean shoulder pads? With our unique washing system and specially formulated detergents contaminates are eradicated.

The Eagan Civic Arena Equipment Washing F.A.Q.

How much does it cost?
Only $30 per set and just $5 per additional piece of equipment!

How long does it take?
We guarantee 24 hour service. However, like doing laundry at home we like to have a full load if possible. That is why we ask: "When do you need it back?" We will always turn it around in 24 hours if you need it. If it is not done when we say it will be, your next wash is FREE.

What is the Clean N' Dry Hanger?
The Clean N' Dry Hanger was designed right here at the Eagan Civic Arena to aid in the initial drying; we also suggest using it to hang equipment after use. Part of keeping equipment clean is keeping it dry. By hanging your equipment after each use on the Clean N' Dry Hanger you will extend the time between cleanings. Not only is it included in the price of a wash but next time you bring it in with your equipment to be cleaned you will receive $5 off!

What can I have cleaned/sanitized?
Just about anything. For skaters we will clean one pair of breezers, elbow pads, shin pads, gloves, and shoulder pads. For goalies we will clean breezers, chest protectors, glove and blocker. At this time we are not able to clean skates, helmets, leg pads for goalies, clothing such as jerseys, socks and supporters, and hockey bags.

We can also clean and sanitize football, lacrosse, soccer, roller hockey gear and much more!

Where do you clean the equipment?
We clean all of the equipment on-site with our Esporta ES3150 Washer-Dryer.

Esporta Information and Pricing

<a href="http://www.ci.eagan.mn.us/upload/images ...
