A Rankings for 12/7/25
A flip at the top in Class A as the Hawks restore their customary perch at the top and group of Lumberjacks chops down the Defending Champs to jump into the Top 10 highlights a busy week #3. Also, the weekly Class A sections check in below:
1. Hermantown (3-0-1)
Past Week Results: W 3-1 Rock Ridge, W 7-2 #7 Mahtomedi
Upcoming Schedule: 12/9 vs Duluth Marshall, 12/11 vs Centennial, 12/13 vs Rosemount
The Hawks' early-season road tour continued this past week, and they looked every bit the part of the top team we thought they could be to start the year. This group is relentless in their attack, and they were able to overcome a slow start at Rock Ridge before breaking down a good Mahtomedi defense for two more impressive early-season wins. Now they finally get some home games as they host some good AA competition when they take on Duluth Marshall, Centennial, and Rosemount this week.
2. Hibbing/Chisholm (5-1-0)
Past Week Results: W 9-3 Duluth Denfeld, W 6-0 Proctor, L 2-4 Shakopee
Upcoming Schedule: 12/9 @ Grand Rapids, 12/13 vs Totino-Grace
The Bluejackets started the week strong, blowing by both Denefeld and Proctor, and while the loss to a ranked AA Shakopee isn’t a bad result, with how good the Hawks have been to start the year, it does give us our first small data point for separation between two excellent 7A powers. Let's see how Hibbing responds this week with a trip to AA Grand Rapids and a visit from AA Totino Grace on the slate for more tests for this talented team.
3. Sartell (5-0-0)
Past Week Results: W 6-5 OT Gentry Academy, W 10-1 Brainerd, W 10-1 Sauk Rapids-Rice
Upcoming Schedule: 12/9 @ Elk River, 12/12 @ Roseau, 12/13 @ Bemidji
The Sabres continued their strong play to start the season as the comeback road overtime win vs Gentry Academy was a good character builder, and they then routed two CLC opponents in Brainerd and Sauk Rapids-Rice to end the week, to not leave any doubts on what this team is capable of. This week will be challenging as Sartell gets deep into their old 8AA games as they hit the road for tough games at Elk River, Roseau, and Bemidji. We are gonna find out a lot more about these Sabres by this time next week.
4. Delano (4-1-0)
Past Week Results: W 3-2 Providence Academy, W 6-0 Southwest Christian/Richfield
Upcoming Schedule: 12/10 @ Chanhassen, 12/12 @ #12 Monticello
Delano got back on track this week as they were able to pick up two Section 2A wins over Providence Academy and Southwest Christian/Richfield. However, as the tight win to start the week over the Lions shows, on any given night, due to their style of play, the Tigers will allow teams to hang around, which can be dangerous. Nonetheless, they hold their spot here in the rankings and have a good test at AA Chanhassen before an interesting match-up vs Top 15 Monticello to end the week.
5. Warroad (5-2-0)
Past Week Results: W 4-2 #10 East Grand Forks, W 3-1 Rock Ridge, W 4-1 Grand Rapids
Upcoming Schedule: 12/12 @ #7 Mahtomedi, 12/13 @ #14 Orono
The Warriors had themselves a strong homestand this past week. They started it by picking up a key early Section 8A win over East Grand Forks. They followed that up with a nice weekend sweep over the two 7AA favorites when they took care of Rock Ridge and Grand Rapids on back-to-back nights. This is a team starting to figure out their roles, and they look as dangerous as anyone in Class A. Now they hit the road with games at Mahtomedi, their kryptonite in recent years, and then at Orono for some good Class A metro tests.
6. Blake (5-1-0)
Past Week Results: W 5-3 Totino-Grace, W 7-2 Westonka
Upcoming Schedule: 12/9 vs #13 St Louis Park, 12/11 vs St Thomas Academy, 12/13 vs Armstrong/Cooper
Nothing too fancy from the Bears this week as they continued their strong early play, but with the wins over AA Totino Grace and 2A Westonka, they were able to get a quality win and also solidify their spot in the top half of their deep section for a productive week overall. Now things pick up for Blake this week as they have a very important section match-up vs ranked St Louis Park and then welcome in AA power STA before finishing the week with AA Armstrong/Cooper.
7. Mahtomedi (1-2-1)
Past Week Results: T 1-1 OT Hill Murray, L 2-7 #1 Hermantown
Upcoming Schedule: 12/9 vs Two Rivers, 12/12 vs #5 Warroad, 12/14 vs #10 East Grand Forks
It wasn’t a win for the Zephyrs, but giving AA power Hill Murray a good push and settling for a tie helps ease any doubts on whether this team is Top 10 quality, as their record won’t be as shiny as many up here due to one of Class A’s toughest schedules. The loss to Hermantown was a good lesson as their structure got leaky and allowed the Hawks to run away, but they will meet again later this season. They can still move up quickly here as they have a big week coming up; they face two 8A powers who sit just above them at home, allowing them a chance to make a move come next week’s ranking.
8. Northfield (4-0-0)
Past Week Results: W 4-3 #14 Orono, W 4-0 Winona
Upcoming Schedule: 12/9 vs #23 Mankato West, 12/13 vs #22 St Cloud Cathedral
Northfield kept up their winning ways this week as they pulled one out late for some revenge against Orono and then had a tight turnaround and handled Winona in their first road game of the year with a shutout. The Raiders early in the year show all the hallmarks of a serious contender: they have gotten balanced and timely scoring, play good team defense, and have gotten steady goaltending. This week presents two good games as they host one of the top 3A teams in Mankato West before welcoming in a better than their record Cathedral.
9. Cloquet/Esko/Carlton (3-3-0)
Past Week Results: W 2-0 #20 Minneapolis, L 0-3 Bemidji, 12/6, W 4-1 #6 East Grand Forks
Upcoming Schedule: 12/9 vs Proctor, 12/13 vs Gentry Academy
Welcome back to the Top Ten Lumberjacks! It was a good week on the road for CEC as they were able to take down two ranked Class A teams, shutting out Minneapolis before pulling the first big upset in A, knocking off EGF to end the week. The Purple did drop a contest to AA Bemidji, but they are now (3-1-0) within Class A, the only loss being a competitive game against Hibbing, and they are the first team to really make the move to the second tier to make the jump this week. Now they have an important 7A game with Proctor before finishing the week with Gentry.
10. East Grand Forks (2-3-0)
Past Week Results: L 2-4 #5 Warroad, L 1-4 #9 Cloquet/Esko/Carlton
Upcoming Schedule: 12/12 @ #14 Orono, 12/13 @ #7 Mahtomedi
Time for some alarm for the Defending Champs? The loss to Warroad on the road happens but the home loss to CEC is a big red flag, though the Jacks seems to have their number, but they still don’t have a win vs a Minnesota team yet on the year albeit all three losses are to Top Ten teams. Games this week against Orono and Mahotmedi will be telling as they try to show they really are a top tier team, and not going to go through another disappointing regular season like last year.
11. Breck (4-1-0)
Past Week Results: W 7-3 Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato
Upcoming Schedule: 12/9 @ #14 Orono, 12/11 @ Armstrong/Cooper, 12/13 vs Holy Angels
Breck kept up their steady progress early in the year with a win in their only action of the week, against Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato, to continue their good start to the season. If their top line and overall team defense continue to perform the way they have to start the season, they’ll be a contender all winter long. This week does provide some good tests for the Mustangs with the game at Orono having big seeding implications, and they finish with AA Armstrong/Cooper and a visit from a good AA Holy Angels.
12. Monticello (1-1-2)
Past Week Results: W 6-1 Pine City Area, T 3-3 OT #15 Chisago Lakes
Upcoming Schedule: 12/9 @ Little Falls, 12/12 vs #4 Delano
The Moose haven’t exactly been explosive to start the season, as they had another week that raised some eyebrows. They did win the most important game of the week when they went on the road and took down 5A Pine City. However, the Chisago Lakes game left one with more questions. Monticello at home came out flat and dug themselves a three-goal hole, but they did come charging back to tie it, but it was still not the effort you expect. This week will provide more challenges as they make a trip to Little Falls, which is never an easy game, before a big matchup with Top 10 Delano to cap off the week.
13. St. Louis Park (2-3-0)
Past Week Results: L 3-9 Edina
Upcoming Schedule: 12/9 @ #6 Blake, 12/11 vs Spring Lake Park/Coon Rapids
The Orioles, as expected, took one on the chin in their only action of the week vs AA power Edina, which really doesn't impact their ranking this week one way or the other. The bigger concern is that they are giving up an average of six goals a game, which won't cut it if St Louis Park is serious about making a run in a deep Section 2A. This week, they finally play a Class A team, and it's a big one as they head to Top 10 Blake in a very important early-season Section matchup between these two former 6AA foes.
14. Orono (1-2-1)
Past Week Results: L 3-4 #8 Northfield, W 7-1 Little Falls
Upcoming Schedule: 12/9 vs #11 Breck, 12/12 vs #10 East Grand Forks, 12/13 vs #5 Warroad
The Spartans continued their trend to start the week of struggling to hold leads as they let another one slip away in a tough road loss vs Northfield, but again showed they can play right with most in Class A. They did notch their first win of the year, beating up on Little Falls to show that when they play teams outside the Top 15, they can roll. The schedule, though, throws them right back into the fire this week as they have a huge 2A match-up with Top 10 Breck to start the week before welcoming in 8A powers EGF and Warroad to end what will be a very challenging week.
15. Chisago Lakes (3-1-2)
Past Week Results: L 2-6 Cambridge-Isanti, T 3-3 OT #12 Monticello
Upcoming Schedule: 12/9 @ Pine City Area, 12/11 @ Gentry Academy, 12/13 @ Osseo
Which team is the real Wildcats, the one that has ties vs Top 15 Orono and Monticello, or the one that gets beaten soundly at home by Cambridge-Isanti? As noted, the loss to begin the week was something against a struggling AA team. To their credit, they did respond by going on the road to tie Monticello. This week, they have a busy one with conference action vs Pine City, a good test with AA Gentry Academy, and a 4A section game at Osseo to end the week.
16. Luverne (5-0-0)
Past Week Results: W 18-0 Redwood Valley, W 3-0 Marshall
Upcoming Schedule: 12/9 vs Fairmont, 12/13 vs #17 Waseca
Roll Cards Roll continued their dominant march through Section 3A and Conference play as they have now outscored 3A opponents 39-3 through three games. They shut out both Redwood Valley and Marshall this past week and will most likely do similar damage to Fairmont to begin this week. Next week does end though with a test as they get a visit from ranked Waseca in a good early season Big South Conference showdown.
17. Waseca (3-1-0)
Past Week Results: W 7-1 Westonka, W 6-1 Marshall
Upcoming Schedule: 12/9 vs Minnesota River, 12/11 @ Worthington, 12/13 @ #16 Luverne
Waseca had a much stronger week as they were able to take care of business vs Westonka and then Marshall at home. The biggest improvement happened within their own end as they were able to lock things down giving up just one goal in each game, which is how they will need to play moving forward to live up to their preseason hype. This week will test that defense, as they can't overlook a sneaky Minnesota River team, and while they should then handle Worthington, the showdown in Luverne to end that week should be a great early game down south!
18. Rochester Lourdes (4-1-0)
Past Week Results: W 6-0 St Paul, W 5-1 Providence Academy
Upcoming Schedule: 12/9 vs Albert Lea, 12/11 @ Red Wing, 12/13 vs Duluth Marshall
Lourdes continued to go about its business as they wrapped up their season-opening five-game road trip by picking up two sound wins this week over St Paul and Providence Academy. Not many people in Class A are talking about the Eagles, but they have won four games in a row, and holding the high-powered Lions to just one goal to end the week was an impressive result. Now, finally, they get to play at home a bit, and they have two Section 1A games vs Albert Lea and Red Wing before a very good test with AA Duluth Marshall to end the week.
19. Northern Lakes (3-2-1)
Past Week Results: W 2-1 Superior (Wis), W 3-1 Alexandria
Upcoming Schedule: 12/11 vs Thief River Falls
The Lightning are now starting to shine a bit brighter after a tough opening two weeks, having won both their games this week, including winning their first game vs a Minnesota team with a respectable result of taking down AA Alexandria, who has wins against Orono and Cathedral this year, to end their good week. Thief River Falls is their only opponent this week as they look to continue their positive momentum of late.
20. Detroit Lakes (2-2-0)
Past Week Results: W 6-1 Sauk Rapids-Rice, W 3-1 Thief River Falls
Upcoming Schedule: 12/9 vs #25 Crookston, 12/11 @ Fergus Falls, 12/12 vs Fargo Davies
What a difference a week makes for the Lakers. Their lineup is starting to get their health back and looked more lively this week as they moved to (2-0-0) vs Minnesota competition, taking out Sauk Rapids-Rice and 8A Thief River Falls at home. This looked much more like the version of Detroit Lakes I was expecting. Now this week, they have a must-win section game vs Crookston for seeding purposes and then battle their biggest rival, Fergus Falls, and another North Dakota school in Fargo Davies.
Next Five Notable Teams
Minneapolis (3-3-0)
The 612 had a tough week as they lost all three of their games this week. It does need to be pointed out that there is no shame in losing to AA Holy Angels and Duluth Marshall, as those are quality programs that most would lose to down here. The shutout loss to ranked CEC was a good game and will put them here right on the fringe of the Top 20, allowing them to jump back in with winnable games on tap over the next two weeks.
St Cloud Cathedral (1-4-0)
The Crusaders continued their early-season struggles this week, as in their only action, they went on the road and got shut out by AA Alexandria. Through five games vs strong competition, this felt like a reality for a team relying on a top line of two sophomores and a freshman to get their production from. This week, they have an important one vs 5A Pine City Area which is a must win game before another very tough game at Top Ten Northfield.
Mankato West (2-1-1)
It was a 1-1-1 week for the Scarlets. They were able to get a good Big 9 Conference win over Albert Lea to start the week and a loss to Totino Grace isn't bad, and they were able to get a tie with a Jefferson crew that has been hot to start the year. Overall, they are still kind of a mystery team as they just have not really played anyone yet to give them a true barometer of how good they really are. They therefore don’t move much for now but this week vs Top 10 Northfield will give them a great chance to make an early statement.
International Falls (3-0-0)
The Broncos are off to an expected hot start as they have scored a whopping 40 goals in just their first three games. While the competition is very suspect as the Iron Range Conference won't offer much this winter, the Falls should win 20-plus games and will only move up as they win by their wide margins. More winnable games this week when they take on Ely, Wadena Deer Creek & Kittson County Central.
Crookston (3-0-1)
The Pirates are unbeaten so far, and they have won the games they should, while dealing with the injury bug a bit. They were able to make a surprise entrance into the 8A Semifinals, and this year the goal is to battle for a top 4 seed. That goal will be tested this week as they have 8A games vs unbeaten Bagley/Fosston and then a match-up with Detroit Lakes, who currently control the 3 seed to give this team a chance to make an early statement up north.

Re: A Rankings for 12/7/25
I thought Hibbing overall played well vs Shakopee, but they couldn't capitalize on the major power play they had in the 2nd. They moved the puck well and had chances, but the Shakopee goalie was tough to beat.
Other than the Cloquet game, Hibbing has looked pretty solid. Still a lot of room to improve, but much better than how they started last year. Main issues now seem to be a need for more secondary scoring and also a couple of top line players need to quit taking themselves off the ice with pointless penalties.
As for EGF, after last year, I'm not buying that their regular season performance will have any bearing on their playoff chances.

- #14 Orono picks up a big OT 2A win over #11 Breck. Mustangs were wearing down the Spartans but the the 3 time defending Section Champs find a way to win

- #8 Northfield takes down #23 Mankato West 4-1 Final... Raiders just continue to win..
Surprise of the Night
#1 Hemantown blows a 5-2 3rd period lead and had to settle for a 5-5 vs Duluth Marshall... Very un-Hawks like
Stat of the Night
#2 Hibbing/Chisholm beats Grand Rapids 5-2 Final
Hibbing came out very flat and trailed 0-2 after 1 period... Switched up the lines rolled to a road win from there...

Re: A Rankings for 12/7/25
What is the overall sentiment on Proctor? The Bantam team took a bit hit with the freshman moving up, but how have those freshman and sophs looked thus far on varsity. Not much left in the pipeline, so these 2-3 years might be their last chance at putting something together after a few solid Bantam/PW years.
Re: A Rankings for 12/7/25
Proctor at (2-5-0) is a bit deceiving as they have losses to #2 Hibbing, #9 CEC, #11 Breck and AA Grand Rapids & Gentry. As you noted, they are very young as they brought up the two stud 9th graders and Sophomore group from the Bantam that went to A State last year. This always felt like a learning year, but they have potential.headsupsticksdown wrote: ↑Thu Dec 11, 2025 11:24 am What is the overall sentiment on Proctor? Watched a period of them vs CEC the other night and they just haven't yet fully adapted to Varsity pace and strength of play. Certain plays and passes they could get away with in youth hockey are turning into big TO's in varsity hockey and ending up in the back of their net. They will grow and learn, and the talent is definitely there.
They will be battle tested by 7A playoff time, and they will be the more than likely #5 seed and play at the #4 seed, International Falls. I do agree with Rainier, the Bronocs looking at the schedule might end up (23-2-0), but they really only play Proctor & Hibbing, so it will be a curious coach's vote.
That said, if they draw The Falls, it will be an interesting one, as noted, the Broncos are gonna have a huge year, but will the lack of competitive games hurt them vs an improved and battle-tested younger Rails teams? Again, way down the road yet. Overall, Proctor in 2 years will have the best shot in long, long, longgggg time to win 7A if everyone sticks around.

Some Notes from (12/11/25) in Class A
- #1 Hermantown takes down another AA foe but giving up 6 goals after giving up 5 to DM is not a good trend

-#19 Northern Lakes & #20 Detroit Lakes both are starting to heat up!

Re: A Rankings for 12/7/25
This is good info. Hopefully Proctor can put together a bit of a run over the next 2-3 years. Good to see most of the boys stick through it all remain together. Can only imagine if you know who didn't jump ship up the street for greener pastures. Proctor is definitely a team to watch and I personally, will be rooting for them!ClassAGuy wrote: ↑Thu Dec 11, 2025 4:13 pmProctor at (2-5-0) is a bit deceiving as they have losses to #2 Hibbing, #9 CEC, #11 Breck and AA Grand Rapids & Gentry. Re: A Rankings for 12/7/25
I'd say Proctor fans have a reason to be optimistic. This player has now ditched two sets of teammates in pursuit of a "better" opportunity, thus the chances of him sticking around for long are slim to none.headsupsticksdown wrote: ↑Fri Dec 12, 2025 8:50 amThis is good info. The Bantam team took a bit hit with the freshman moving up, but how have those freshman and sophs looked thus far on varsity. Not much left in the pipeline, so these 2-3 years might be their last chance at putting something together after a few solid Bantam/PW years.

- #5 Warroad wins a heavyweight fight with #7 Mahtomedi 4-2 Final ENG... Warriors goalie Finn Hanson was big!
- #4 Delano takes down #12 Monticello 3-2 OT... Tiger (5-0-0) vs Class A and have 3 Top 15 Wins!
-#10 EGF and #14 Orono settle for a tie 5-5 OT... Orono again cant hold 3rd period lead and EGF used a goalie change to spark the rally!
