Hill-Murray VS Mahtomedi
Rogers/WBL - 'nuff said
It's coming up on 20 years since the Roseau won AA and some recent teams have been ordinary, TRF has a state champion youth group on its way up
Forest Lake & Rock Ridge are poised to make waves in 7AA and could reach state if Andover falters
BSM has had key players out with injury and early results indicate Gentry is pretty good... one to watch for sure
DE vs GR was recently appointment viewing, can this year's edition restore the luster?
Hibbing should be pretty good and Cloquet is in a good spot right now for Class A
H-M & Maht usually have an epic tilt... can a depleted Zephyr squad keep it close

Nice choices, Elliott. Some great games for sure.

Thanks for the condensed version. Podunk vs Tiny River is really not on anyone's radar, and listing such contests just makes it more difficult to see the games that actually matter.

I see the Zephs vs. HM is on MNHOCKEYTV. A monthly pass is $27, not much of a deal when the season began late in the month.

HM up 8-1 late in 3rd on Mahtomedi. I saw Mahtomedi already dropped a game to ranked Hibbing, so just not sure if they are young or just a down year. Surprised by the score, Zephyrs almost always play HM tough.

Was periodically checking the score on X - looks like Hill scored 4 third period PP goals in 3 minutes. Wonder if there was a major or something…

For a few years in a row now, Hill has had deep teams but maybe not quite the tippy top end of talent. At least on offense; their D core is always great. This year, they have one of the more talented goal scoring groups for a Pioneer team that I can recall. Assuming their D group is very good again, this team will be quite dangerous.

Alexandria 3, Brainerd 2 in OT. Shots were something like 40-35. Alex with two power play goals, Brainerd with a power play and a penalty shot.

CEC beats Hibbing 8-5, shots 25-22 Hibbing.

Hibbing up 4-0 early, then CEC went bananas. Can't blame the Hibbing goalie too much, he was hung out to dry way too often. CEC's top 5 players are fantastic, felt like they were out there the whole game making plays.

You are correct. I was at the game tonight, and it was a 3-1 game going into the 3rd period. But Mahtomedi had a 5 minute major penalty that carried into the third, and Hill scored 4 PP goals on that major. So the final score wasn't necessarily indicative of the team's strenghts. That said, Hill was definitely the better team. Even without the major penalty, they still outshot Mahtomedi by a significant margin. I think it was 53-12 by the end of the game. The Zephyrs will also need to figure out where their offense is going to come from, because none of their skaters could generate much offensive pressure at all.

Yep, and part of that 5 min major was 5-on-3. That major call was the when the ice tilted. Maht held their own for almost two full periods. Young. Playing against a team with a ton of old talent, I'd say there are some positives for Maht to take away. Looking forward to watching Hill play against the big AA teams. They're going to be a force this year

In the CEC/Hibbing box score on the hub, it says CEC scored goals at 12:03 and 12:04 of the 2nd Period? Can anyone confirm what happened there? There's no way they actually scored 2 goals 1 second apart, right? Also, BIG result for CEC, especially after Hibbing beat Mahtomedi last week!

Watched this one & the EGF vs DL game last night

Hibbing went up 4-0 12 minutes into the game. A small turning point was when down 0-4 CEC went back into the box but Hibbing gave up a short handed goal gave Lumberjacks some life before end of the 1st period. 2nd period was crazy CEC scored five more unanswered goals to go up 6-4 I am not sure on the exact timing is was not 1 second apart ever but the flurry came fast could not keep up sending updates on the game. Hibbing scored a PP goal at the start of the third to make it 6-5 and did make a bit of a push but once CEC made it 7-5 it was game over.

Hibbing misses Strukel on the backend but overall they looked like young team who took their foot off the gas after going up big in the 1st period and just got overwhelmed by the Purple momentum. CEC top line plays a ton and they are very good but will need to develop more depth.

Overall fun game they meet again later this season. Rematch will be fun!

I'm afraid it's going to be a long, tough year for Maht. Too many of their best players have chosen to play elsewhere. Definitely a down year or two while they work to try and hang on to the next wave of kids coming up...

Scoring 4 goals on a 5 min major is very impressive. I've seen plenty of 5 min majors with no scoring, and several with only one goal. Even a 5 on 3 doesn't do much to mitigate that. And I'd imagine to get a minor penalty during a major, it would likely have to be fairly flagrant.

So without the major it would "only" have been 5-1? As if beating the Zephs by 4 wouldn't be notable? Sorry, 9-1 is a serious beatdown.

The Zephyrs will be fine. They may be down this year by their standards - however I think thats yet to be determined. They're in a section that is currently a cakewalk for making it to State. It wouldn't surprise me in the least bit if they're back at the X representing section 4A this year, and it wouldn't surprise me if they are yet again playing on Friday night. They have a great program from youths on up, they are well-coached, and they have a supportive community. They do lose talent to privates, no doubt about it. But they'll be just fine.

What's I find a little interesting is that Mahtomedi seems to get a pass from the criticism other dominant A programs have faced. Mahtomedi is a well-to-do suburban metro district with nearly 1200 high school students. They have owned their section for a while now, won multiple recent championships, and have been a borderline lock to make it to Friday night at State for the better part of a decade. Yet they face zero calls to move up, and are somehow still seen as the little engine that could. It's sort of baffling to me. Any other white collar community metro program with their success in A and the size of their student body would have faced all sorts of chirping by this point. If ever there was a Goliath in David's clothing, it's the Zephyrs.

I don't give them a pass, they play AA at youth, compete just fine with the best all the way up, and then drop down to Class A when HS playoffs arrive.

But Hermantown is different in that they are leveraging their location in a metro area to dominate small community schools, whereas the other teams in 4A have geographic access to a huge talent pool, they just haven't yet found the magic sauce to get the talent to come in. We've seen SPA have good teams, and the potential is always there for them to convince a bunch of local talent to go there, but for most of the teams in 7A, no matter how great their program is at development, they are always limited by the surrounding population.
