Class A Ranking Week #7 (1/9/2022)

1- Hermantown (7A) (10-1-0)
Past Week Results: W 6-1 Duluth Denfeld, W 5-2 Eden Prairie
Upcoming Schedule: 1/14 @ St Cloud Cathedral, 1/15 vs Warroad
The Hawks showed they are still the giant in Section 7A as they dismantled the Hunters minus Zam 6-1. The other Plante, Max, continued his strong play of late in absence of his brother as he led the way with 4 points. The Hawks finished the week with a solid game and very nice win over the defending AA Champs. This week they have a quick venture south to SCC before the Game of the Year in Class A as they face the Warrior at home next Saturday for what is sure to be an epic #1 vs #2 game and a treat for all Class A puck lovers.

2- Warroad (8A) (14-0-0)
Past Week Results: W 5-0 Roseau, W 9-0 Fergus Falls, W 3-0 Detroit Lakes
Upcoming Schedule: 1/14 @ Crookston, 1/15 @ Hermantown
The Warriors got their week off to an outstanding start winning “The Game” over the #1 AA Rams by a wide 5-0 margin. The game was tight until halfway through when star sophomore defenseman Ryan Lund found himself on a shorthanded breakaway he buried the puck and Warriors buried their long rivals from there. They went on to destroy a solid Fergus Falls club 9-0 on the Otters home ice. The State’s most dangerous duo Gardner & Shaugabay led the way with each having four point nights in the rout. They capped off the week with a nice win vs a fully rested Laker team on their home ice scoring a goal in each period and controlling the pace of play and Hampton Slukynsky picked up his 3rd shutout of the week. Now all eyes are set for next Saturday as the looming 1 vs 2 and potential State Title Game preview vs. the Hawks will be a treat for everyone.

3- Little Falls (5A) (14-0-0)
Past Week Results: W 5-0 Bemidji, W 6-3 Hutchinson
Upcoming Schedule: 1/13 @ Princeton, 1/15 @ Fergus Falls
The Flyers picked up one of their most impressive wins of the year over a tough Bemidji bunch. While the scoring has been great all year this game showed they appear to have solved the goaltender question as Junior Richie Varriano stopped 44 of 45 shots to continue his recent strong play since taking over the starting role over the holidays. Then the Flyers showed their strength the next game as the State’s leading scorer Junior Matt Filippi stole the show against Hutchinson as his impressive 5 point night carried the Flyers to their 14th straight win. This week the Flyers have two tough road tests as they head to Princeton where they have never played well and then a big rematch of the epic OT Section Final with the Otters on Saturday.

4- Mahtomedi (4A) (6-6-1)
Past Week Results: W 9-1 St Paul Highland Park, L 1-3 St Thomas Academy
Upcoming Schedule: 1/11 @ Simley, 1/15 vs Hill Murray
The Zephyrs figured out one way to solve their scoring issues of late by playing an actual Section 4A team. They dominated from start to finish against St Paul Highland Park and they were led by the other Dardis, Grant, who had a solid 3 point night. In the rematch with STA however the goal scoring issue continued they hung around throughout but you are not going to win many games only scoring 1 goal a theme of late for this group when playing better teams. This week is presents a big road game vs presumed #2 seed in Section 4A Simley and then another very tough test vs. Hill Murray.

5- Delano (2A) (9-3-0)
Past Week Results: W 2-1 Rosemount, W 5-2 St Cloud Cathedral
Upcoming Schedule: 1/11 @ Holy Family, 1/13 @ Hutchinson
The Tigers picked up one of their most impressive wins of the season on the roast at AA Rosemount. Gunnar Paulson scored the game winning goal and the Tigers did what they do best once they captured the lead they played structured and defended and Junior Drew Dorsey stopped 31 of 32 for the nice road win. They followed that up with a nice victory over SCC in a game in which they outshot the Crusaders 45-15 and pulled away in the third period for the win and to finish a very good week. Now they face some WCC teams this week and they should continue to roll in both games.

6- Duluth Denfeld (7A) (11-3-0)
Past Week Results: L 1-6 Hermantown, W 3-2 OT Superior, W 10-0 North Shore
Upcoming Schedule: 1/13 vs Grand Rapids, 1/14 vs Dodge County
The Hunter's eight game winning streak came to a crashing halt when they visited the Hawk Nest to start the week. The Hunters did score first but it was all Hermantown after that to show the gap in 7A appears to be as steep as ever. Sophomore Brady McGinn’s overtime power play goal allowed the Hunters to get back in the win column and escape the upset bid posed by Wisconsin’s Superior. Connor McClure’s 5 points were more than enough as the Hunter finished their week by beating up 7A North Shore. This week they have back to back home games that will offer more good tests as they have AA Grand Rapids and Dodge County coming to visit.

7- Minneapolis (2A) (9-3-1)
Past Week Results: T 3-3 Litchfield Dassel Cokato, W 3-2 Rock Ridge
Upcoming Schedule: 1/10 @ Osseo, 1/13 @ Orono
Minneapolis got all they could handle from the Section 2A Dragons of LDC on the road. In a game that was very even and back and forth it ended up not tied only on the scoreboard at 3-3 but in the shot category as well as each team had 31 very surprising outcoming. They followed that up by getting a good win over an improving Rock Ridge team. Next up this week is a huge Section 2A game at Orono on Thursday that could do some major shake up to this poll.

8- Providence Academy (2A) (12-2-0)
Past Week Results: W 8-3 St Paul Academy, W 4-1 Monticello, W 6-5 Duluth Marshall
Upcoming Schedule: 1/13 vs Blake, 1/15 @ Rock Ridge
The Lions got their week off to a good beginning as they scored 8 goals to go along with their 8 game win streak in their rout over SPA. A few days later Sophomore Sammy Lewis’s 2 goal night kept the Lions win streak going in a nice 3 goal victory over the Moose. The Lions then had a closer then expected game with Duluth Marshall but they have now won ten in a row overall since getting blown up by Minneapolis and will get a good test on Thursday this coming week when they host Blake.

9- Alexandria (6A) (6-4-1)
Past Week Results: W 8-2 Monticello, W 5-2 Fergus Falls, W 4-2 Bemidji
Upcoming Schedule: 1/11 @ Brainerd, 1/15 vs. Totino Grace
The Cards started their challenging week in style as they blew out the Moose 8-2 behind Joe Lamski’s 4 goal night. Junior Nicholas Petersn had 2 goals to lead the way as the Cardinals dominated their 6A Rival Fergus Falls to show they are clearly rounding into form as a legitimate Class A Top 10 Team. Alex outshot the Otters 38-22 and controlled the pace of play throughout a major statement win from them in 6A. They were able to wrap up their week with a tough win over Bemidji in a penalty-filled game. Alexandria now has established itself as a top 10 team in Class A and this week they face two AA teams both games they should have a good chance to win and continue to build on their good recent stretch of play.

10- East Grand Forks (8A) (5-7-0)
Past Week Results: L 3-5 Grand Forks Red River, W 6-5 Thief River Falls, L 2-5 Gentry Academy
Upcoming Schedule: 1/11 @ Moorhead, 1/13 vs Fargo Davies
The Greenwave’s disastrous 3rd period cost them a big rivalry game to start the week. They allowed 5 third period goals and watched a two goal lead evaporate into another disappointing loss. They were able to rebound as sophomore Brock Schultz’s big 3 point night help carry the Greenwave to a much needed wild 6-5 win over TRF to help them keep their firm grip on the #2 seed in Section 8A. They fizzled in the week’s final game as they gave up 5 goals again to lose to Gentry. I know I should move them down but no one below is deserving at this point. They own wins over all teams below them and all 7 losses are to high quality teams so for now they stay showing how big of a gap there is in Class A between the Elite and the rest. Doesn't get any easier this week with a MN AA Power and rising North Dakota program this week.

11- Detroit Lakes (8A) (9-4-0)
Past Week Results: L 0-3 Warroad
Upcoming Schedule: 1/13 vs. Thief River Falls
The Lakers played hard in their only game this week vs Warroad at home. They stuck around in a game where they were outplayed by the Warriors whose superior skill set was evident but they rode the hot hand of goaltender Elijah Blow who had a phenomenal effort and finished with 35 saves. Now the Lakers not only still sit outside the top 10 but they have their most important game of the year this week. They host TRF for who will be the #3 seed in Section 8A. If the Lakers lose they will be locked into the #4 seed and semifinal date with Warroad and they dont want that so it's a big game for them on their home ice.

12- Orono (2A) (6-6-1)
Past Week Results: W 7-0 Mankato West, W 2-0 St. Cloud Cathedral
Upcoming Schedule: 1/11 vs. Chanhassen, 1/13 vs. Minneapolis, 1/15 @ Bloomington Kenneday
Orono throttled a struggling Mankato West team 7-0 in a nice win to start 2022. Ryan Schultz and Easton Sankey each had two goal nights in the Spartan’s blowout win. Orono then was able to pick up another quality Class A win of late as Bradley Walker’s 2 point night and Brock Peyton’s shut out allowed the Spartans to secure a good win over SCC. Now they have a big week coming up as they face two Section 2A teams, the big game being a showdown with Minneapolis at home on Thursday. Orono can still get the #1 seed in 2A despite their .500 record.

13- Fergus Falls (6A) (9-5-0)
Past Week Results: L 2-5 Alexandria, L 0-9 Warroad
Upcoming Schedule: 1/15 vs. Little Falls
Fergus Falls has fallen on hard times after a breakout year last year and returning nearly every key piece this season expectations were sky high but after a hot start something seems to be missing from this 2022 version. This past week their losing streak rose to three straight as they dropped a critical Section 6A game vs Alexandria and then were routed at home by a very good Warroad club. All is not lost for this team as there is still talent and a big home game vs Little Falls awaits this week the team who ended their magical run last year. The perfect game and way to switch a momentum within your season would be to end the Flyers unbeaten season.

14- St. Cloud Cathedral (5A) (8-5-0)
Past week: L 0-2 Orono, L 2-5 Delano
Upcoming Schedule: 1/11 vs. Pine City, 1/14 vs. Hermantown
The Crusaders were another team that saw its stock take a hit this week. We knew their schedule would turn more real come 2022 and they ended up 0-2 in their first real tests since the pounding they took from EGF. This team is hard to read. They are definitely a top 20 but their youth may make them still a year away from being a true top 10 team. Still they don’t own any bad losses and they should be able to get a win vs Pine City this week before the big bad Hawks come to town on Friday.

15- Cambridge- Isanti (5A) (9-2-0)
Past Week Results: W 5-2 Sauk Rapids, W 3-2 OT Chisago Lakes
Upcoming Schedule: 1/11 @ Becker Big Lake, 1/12 @ Northern Edge, 1/14 vs Pine City
Cambridge won an important 5A road game over the Storm. In a game where they were surprisingly tied 2-2 after two periods of play, a big third period allowed the Blue Jackets to continue their win streak.. The Bluejackets followed that up by picking up maybe their most impressive win of their 9 game win streak when they knocked off Chisago Lakes at home in overtime. They have found a formula of timely scoring, Sophomore Will O'Donovan played the hero with GW OT goal, and then riding the State’s Top Freshman Goaltender in Phenom Jaxon Sibell. Three more winnable games on the docket this week for Cambridge to keep their magical run moving.

16- Mankato East (3A) (9-4-0)
Past Week: W 6-4 Hutchinson
Upcoming Schedule: 1/11 @ Dodge County, 1/13 @ Rochester Mayo
The Cougars won their only game of the week. In a weird game of momentum pushes it was Mankato East’s 5 straight unanswered goals that proved to be too much to overcome for Hutch. Junior Brayden Borgmeier’s 2 goal night led the way as the Cougars secured their 9th win of the year. The Cougars will now see an uptick in their opponent strength as they take on two good AA southern teams this week first the rematch with Dodge County we never got to see at the end of last year due to COVID and then a tough road matchup with a solid AA Mayo squad should help us learn more about the 3A Favorites.

17- Simley (4A) (11-3-0)
Past Week Results: W 8-0 Two Rivers, W 7-1 St Paul Johnson
Upcoming Schedule: 1/11 vs Mahtomedi, 1/13 vs Hill Murray, 1/15 @ Hastings.
Simley continued its domination of Section 4A teams as they blew out Two Rivers 8-0 behind senior Jayar Luedke’s hat trick. After the win over Two Rivers they went on to blow out 4A St Paul Johnson to strengthen its resume for the Section #2 seed. Now things get real in a hurry for Simley as they play the three toughest games of the year in row next week. None bigger than hosting Mahtomedi on Tuesday can Simley hang with the Section’s best team?

18- Chisago Lakes (4A) (7-3-1)
Past Week Results: L 2-3 OT Cambridge
Upcoming Schedule: 1/11 vs. Northern Edge, 1/14 vs. Monticello
Another one game week and another tough one goal loss for the Wildcats on the road this past week. They hung tough with Cambridge in a very even and back and forth game but they haven't been able to find a way to win these tight games of late. This week they need to get back to their winning ways as Simley has slowly jumped pass them with their own win streak of late for the #2 seed in 4A. It will be interesting to see if the Wildcats can get back on track this week vs Mississippi 8 Conference teams Northern Edge and Monitcello.

19- Northfield (1A) (5-4-1)
Past Week Results: T 3-3 Rochester Mayo, L 2-6 Hastings
Upcoming Schedule: 1/13 @ Owatonna, 1/15 @ Rochester Century
Northfield’s downward spiral of late continued as they had a back and forth game with Rochester Mayo which ended up tied. The Raiders are searching for the secondary scoring Spencer Koltz’s 3 points were not enough to secure a win. They were then beaten up by a solid AA Hastings team to end the week. This week they have two games they really need to win to get back on track and re-establish themselves as the team to beat in Section 1A.

20- Albert Lea (1A) (9-2-0)
Past Week Results: W 3-2 Windom, W 6-2 Winona
Upcoming Schedule: 1/13 vs Mankato West, 1/15 vs Red Wing
Albert Lea started their tenure in the rankings playing very shaky. They found themselves in a battle with Windom down 2-1 in the third period however they were able to scrap two goals together to get the win late. Junior Tim Chalmers big four point night helped Albert Lea win its 7th game in a row as they dominated Winona. Looking at the week ahead its two more less than talented teams and I will keep Albert Lea ranked for now as they should continue to rack up wins and pursuit of the #1 seed in 1A.

The Next Five Notable Class A Teams-
Southwest Christian (2A) (6-4-1)- The Stars picked up two Section 2A wins over the lower tier group as they try to salvage a decent seed. I am tempted to rank SWC again but let's see how this week goes.

Thief River Falls (8A)- (4-7-0)- Lost a tough one to EGF but this week the game vs DL is huge as it will help answer a lot of questions I have about both teams and where they really sit in Class A.

New Ulm (3A) (10-3-0)- The Eagles picked up three more wins in the Big South. They were not that impressive in doing so but wins are wins and they look to be the clear 2 seed in 3A.

Mound Westonka (2A) (6-7-0)- The White Hawks got pounded by Holy Family and they honestly are barely hanging on to even being mentioned anymore much like the Trojans below them. .

New Prague (1A) (4-5-1)- The Trojans had a very bad week. They were hammered by Shakopee who they played tight early in the year and then they dropped one to Hopkins to almost drop them out of even being mentioned.

Class A Sectional Break Downs Week #7

Section 1A (11 Teams)
Team- (Overall Record)
1- Northfield (19)- (5-4-1)
2- Albert Lea (20)- (9-2-0)
3- New Prague (4-5-1)
4- Rochester Lourdes- (9-4-0)
5- La Crescent (6-5-0)
6- Red Wing (4-7-0)
7- Waseca (2-7-1)
8- Faribault- (3-9-0)
9- Winona (1-7-1)
10- Austin (0-6-0)
11- Cotter (0-6-0)

Section 1A Overview- This section standings this week are a little more clear as it appears to be a three team race with Northfield, New Prague and now rising Albert Lea. Rochester Lourdes with the nice record could get the three seed over the Trojans still because they play more 1A teams. La Crescent is at five followed by Red Wing and then it gets more complicated but games to be played could help settle the 5-11 debate as we get closer to sectionals.

Section 2A (11 Teams)
Team- (Overall Record)
1- Delano (5)- (9-3-0)
2- Minneapolis (7)- (9-3-1)
3- Providence Academy (8)- (12-2-0)
4- Orono (12)- (6-6-1)
5- Mound Westonka (6-7-0)
6- Southwest Christian- (6-4-1)
7- Hutchinson (7-6-0)
8- Breck- (2-8-0)
9- Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato (6-5-1)
10- Bloomington Kennedy- (3-7-1)
11- Waconia- (3-8-0)

Section 2A Overview- Section 2A is the most fun to try and read. Right now Delano is number one and closely followed by Minneapolis and then Providence Academy is stuck at the three seed as they only have two losses but both are to 2A teams. Orono could still get the 1 seed if they have a good week and win their 2A games this week they will jump to one. Mound Westonka’s win over the Lions is holding them over Southwest Christian for now. Litchfield/Dassel Cokato is rising of late and Bloomington Kennedy's win over Waconia shows their improvement as well.

Section 3A (10 Teams)
Team- (Overall Record)
1- Mankato East (16)- (9-4-0)
2- New Ulm- (10-3-0)
3- Luverne- (6-5-0)
4- Marshall- (6-7-0)
5- Worthington- (6-4-0)
6- Windom (6-8-0)
7- Minnesota River- (3-8-0)
8- Mankato West- (4-8-0)
9- Fairmont- (3-6-0)
10- Redwood Valley-(2-11-0)

Section 3A Overview- Mankato East and New Ulm are the clear top two seeds. Luverne has not lost to anyone in 3A yet. Marshall is holding on at four. Worthington and Windom are in a battle for the five seed. Mankato West won’t get the eight seed but their loss to Minnesota River continues to hurt their claim to anything higher.

Section 4A (8 teams)
Team- (Overall Record)
1- Mahtomedi (4)- (6-6-1)
2- Simley (17) (11-3-0)
3- Chisago Lakes (18)- (7-3-1)
4- St Paul Highland Park (4-7-1)
5- Two Rivers- (6-6-0)
6- St Paul Academy (4-6-0)
7- South St. Paul - (3-8-0)
8- St Paul Johnson- (3-6-0)

Section 4A Overview-
Mahtomedi plays Simley this week to show us if anyone in this section can contend with them. Chisago Lakes plays no one in 4A and is a mystery team but looks set at the two or three seed. I will keep St Paul Highland Park at four over Two Rivers due to their head to head win vs them. The St Paul’s will battle for the other three seeds after that.

Section 5A (10 teams)
Team- (Overall Record)
1- Little Falls (3)- (14-0-0)
2- St. Cloud Cathedral (14)- (8-5-0)
3- Cambridge Isanti (15)- (9-2-0)
4- Princeton (6-7-0)
5- Sauk Rapids (4-9-0)
6- Monticello- (4-10-0)
7- River Lakes- (5-7-0)
8- Mora- (7-4-2)
9- Pine City (5-9-0)
10- Becker/Big Lake- (2-9-0)

Section 5A Overview- Little Falls continues its unbeaten season to stay number one. St Cloud Cathedral has no bad losses yet and has a tougher schedule than Cambridge to stay ahead of them for now. I think in the end it will be Monitcello and River Lakes in the 4 vs 5 game but the Moose need to start winning some games. Then it’s Princeton, Sauk Rapids, Mora and Pine City with Becker Big Lake as the bottom.

Section 6A (8 teams)
Team- (Overall Record)
1- Alexandria (9)- (6-4-1)
2- Fergus Falls (13)- (9-5-0)
3- Wadena Deer Creek- (9-4-0)
4- Northern Lakes- (7-4-0)
5- Morris Benson- (5-6-1)
6- Prairie Centre- (3-9-0)
7- Willmar- (3-6-0)
8- Breckenridge/Wahpeton- (0-9-0)

Section 6A Overview- This Section’s top 4 seeds will play out according to whoever wins the second meeting of Alexandria and Fergus Falls will get the one seed and whoever gets the win of Wadena Deer Creek and Northern Lakes gets the three seed. The 5-8 seeds are locked in accordingly as shown up above. Not much drama or debate in this small outstate section.

Section 7A (10 teams)
Team- (Overall Record)
1- Hermantown (1)- (10-1-0)
2- Duluth Denfeld (5)- (11-3-0)
3- Hibbing (5-7-0)
4- Greenway- (3-4-0)
5- Rock Ridge- (5-7-0)
6- Proctor- (8-5-0)
7- North Shore- (3-7-0)
8- International Falls- (2-7-0)
9- Ely- (2-9-0)
10- Moose Lake- (1-13-0)

Section 7A Overview-. Hermantown showed on Tuesday that they are still clearly above the rest up in 7A. Duluth Denfeld is the clear two seed. A fun battle for 3-6 as Hibbing looks to hold the advantage for now but Greenway is fading while Rock Ridge is improving and Proctor is having its best season in a few years.

Section 8A (10 teams)
Team- (Overall Record)
1- Warroad (2)- (14-0-0)
2- East Grand Forks (10)- (5-7-0)
3- Detroit Lakes (11)- (9-4-0)
4- Thief River Falls- (4-7-0)
5- Red Lake Falls- (9-5-0)
6- Bagley/Fosston- (6-7-1)
7- Lake of the Woods (4-6-0)
8- Crookston- (1-9-1)
9- Park Rapids- (5-8-0)
10- Kittson Central- (3-8-1)

Section 8A Overview- Warroad is the clear one seed and East Grand Forks is locked in at the two seed for now. The game this week between Detroit Lakes and Thief River Falls will determine the three and four seed order. Red Lake Falls is the best of the rest for the five seed and shout out to Bagley/Fosston who is on track for the six seed, their highest seed ever!

Ugh, I had an infection that knocked me out of commission the past few days. I am thankfully starting to feel better. These are obviously very late and don’t include tonight‘s action, but I wanted to get them out for the record so I have something to work off of for next week.

1. Hermantown (10-1-0) [LW 1]
W 6-1 vs Denfeld, W 5-2 vs Eden Prairie
The Hawks disposed of their primary roadblock within 7A and a good Eden Prairie squad without much fuss. After surrendering the first goal to Denfeld, Hermantown slowly strangled the life out of the game like a python, never really leaving the outcome in doubt. They jumped on EP early and capitalized on all three power play chances. Kade Kohanski had a big week, with five assists against Denfeld and two goals Saturday. The Hawks have an exciting weekend coming up, with a trip to St. Cloud ahead of the most anticipated Class A game of the regular season.
Fri @ Cathedral, Sat vs Warroad

2. Warroad (14-0-0) [LW 2]
W 5-0 @ Roseau, W 9-0 @ Fergus Falls, W 3-0 @ DL
The Warriors completed a magnificent week in which they thrashed three quality opponents, including last week's #1 AA team by a combined 17-0 count. Against both archrival Roseau and Fergus, Warroad turned on the jjets in the second and third periods to put tight contests way out of reach. While the high flying offense garners much of the attention, and rightfully so, Hampton Slukynsky has now pitched seven shutouts on this season and has only given up two goals in the last eight outings. Warroad is nipping at the heels of Hermantown, but that debate will be settled, at least for now, this Saturday.
Fri @ Crookston, Sat @ Hermantown

3. Little Falls (14-0-0) [LW 3]
W 5-1 vs Bemidji, W 6-3 vs Hutchinson
The highest-scoring team in the state, the Flyers actually lowered their scoring average slightly in two routine victories over decent competition. Both games started out tight before Little Falls blew things open in the second period. Matt Filippi had nine points on the week to increase his state-leading total to 54. The Fergus Falls contest has lost much of its luster with the Otters' recent tailspin, but still bears watching.
Thu @ Princeton, Sat @ Fergus Falls

4. Mahtomedi (6-6-1) [LW 4]
W 9-1 vs Highland Park, L 1-3 @ STA
It's like a broken record doing the write ups for the Zephyrs each week. Dardis performs brilliantly (in this case stopping by 28 of 30 shots, with an empty net goal), but Mahtomedi falls short to a strong foe due to a lack of offensive output. Still, it's hard to justify punishing them for scheduling aggressively. At least there are some weaker 4A teams thrown in for balance lately, and this coming week is more of the same.
Tue vs Simley, Sat vs Hill-Murray

5. Delano (8-3-0) [LW 6]
W 2-1 @ Rosemount, W 5-2 vs Cathedral
The Tigers keep doing their thing, winning lower-scoring games with a smothering defense and opportune offense. Delano played a strong second stanza and hung on for victory over a Rosemount team that had just defeated Andover, and broke open a tie game with Cathedral with three late goals in about 90 seconds. I bumped Delano back above Denfeld based on these wins and their stronger play against Hermantown. Two conference opponents await; the Tigers have already defeated Hutchinson, and have a strong chance to knock off a down Holy Family crew.
Tue @ Holy Family, Thu @ Hutch

6. Duluth Denfeld (9-2-0) [LW 5]
L 1-6 @ Hermantown, W 3-2 (OT) @ Superior, W 10-0 vs North Shore
The Hunters drop back down a spot after turning in an uncompetitive performance against Hermantown and barely escaping a mediocre Superior team. Denfeld will have to go back to the drawing board to avoid a third straight lopsided section final loss to the Hawks, since the two teams appear to be on the collision course again. The top line matches up well and is racking up stats against lesser foes, but depth and goaltending are longer term concerns. Things won't be any easier this week with a tough Tuesday night matchup against the Thunderhawks.
Thu vs Grand Rapids, Fri vs Dodge County

7. Alexandria (6-4-1) [LW 9]
W 8-2 vs Monticello, W 5-2 vs Fergus, W 4-2 @ Bemidji
Aside from Warroad, the Cardinals had probably the most impressive week of any Class A team. Of the three triumphs, the one over Fergus Falls was obviously the most important, as it put Alexandria in the driver's seat for the top seed in 6A. (Though they are just 2-0 in section, with only four games left on the schedule.) Josiah Gronholz continues to pace the scoring, but the top two forwards lines are solid across the board, and goaltender Teagan Pfeffer has been much improved of late. Coming up are two winnable games against middling AA competition.
Tue @ Brainerd, Sat vs Totino-Grace

8. Minneapolis (9-3-1) [LW 7]
T 3-3 @ LDC, W 3-2 vs Rock Ridge
Not a great week for Minneapolis against two mediocre opponents. They couldn't distance themselves from Litchfield, trading goals the whole game, and needed a late Zander Zoia tally to escape Rock Ridge after coughing up a two-goal lead in the third. Yes, they defeated Alexandria just above in the rankings, but that game was a month ago and was a close contest. Still, the overall résumé is solid so I can't justify dropping them too much. Minneapolis has an important section contest Thursday night versus the suddenly surging Spartans.
Mon @ Osseo, Thu @ Orono

9. Providence Academy (12-2-0) [LW 8]
W 8-3 @ SPA, W 4-1 vs Monticello, W 6-5 @ Duluth Marshall
The Lions extended their winning streak to 10, albeit not without some Saturday drama in Duluth against a weaker Marshall team. Interestingly, Providence is just 2-2 in section play, with three games remaining against lower tier teams. The offense has been buoyed by the return of last season's leading scorer, Johnny Hendrickson, who has been out of the lineup much of the year. Providence has two fairly challenging games on the docket, starting with a down Blake group that is still plenty talented.
Thu vs Blake, Sat @ Rock Ridge

10. Detroit Lakes (9-4-0) [LW 11]
L 0-3 vs Warroad
The Lakers only played once this week due to postponement of the Wadena contest, but made the most of it in giving Warroad more of a challenge than anyone else over the past month. The top two lines are solid across the board, though Warroad did a good job of holding down standouts like Boehne and Bergman. DL is currently 4-2 in section play, with losses to EGF and Warroad, and will need to avoid picking up another loss this week to avoid a likely semifinal rematch with the Warriors.
Thu vs TRF

11. Orono (6-6-1) [LW 18]
W 7-0 vs Mankato West, W 2-0 @ Cathedral
The Spartans bounced back nicely from the Hermantown loss by blitzing West and locking down against Cathedral. They end up being the biggest climber of the week thanks to those performances and the recent Delano win. Junior Bradley Walker is able to carry the offense on his back at times, as he scored once against Cathedral and assisted on the other goal. Orono is 3-0 so far in section play, and they have a huge tilt with Minneapolis coming up after a meeting with a talented group from Chan.
Tue vs Chanhassen, Thu vs Minneapolis, Sat @ Kennedy

12. East Grand Forks (5-7-0) [LW 10]
L 3-5 @ GF Red River, W 6-5 vs TRF, L 2-5 vs Gentry
Another brutal week for the Green Wave, which was very symbolic of their season as a whole. They surrendered 5 third period goals to Red River, barely survived a late comeback by the Prowlers, and were never really in the game against Gentry. The defensive and goaltending woes just continue to plague this team at every turn, overshadowing Jaksen Panzer's excellence. A trip to Moorhead kicks off a six game gauntlet in which EGF can realistically only expect to win one or two.
Tue @.Moorhead, Thu vs Fargo Davies

13. Mankato East (8-4-0) [LW 14]
W 6-4 @ Hutchinson
In their only action of the week, the Cougars built up a big lead over a solid Hutch crew and held off a third-period comeback attempt. East features some of the most balanced scoring in the state, with four skaters tied for the team lead at 16 points and three more in double digits. The upcoming schedule features two winnable games against 1AA competition, though Mayo has bitten a few teams.
Tue @ Dodge County, Thu @ Mayo

14. Fergus Falls (9-5-0) [LW 13]
L 2-5 @ Alex, L 0-9 vs Warroad
The Otters continue their downward spiral,, dropping two lopsided decisions in which they were minimally competitive. The Alex game was even worse than the score indicated, as Fergus was stuck in single-digit shots after two periods. Warroad pounced for two goals in the first two minutes, and the Otters never recovered. if this was another team without the talent and expectations, I would probably have them even lower based on results. Fergus has a great opportunity to right the ship against longtime rival Little Falls and potentially spoil their undefeated campaign.
Sat vs Little Falls

15. St. Cloud Cathedral (8-5-0) [LW 12]
L 0-2 vs Orono, L 2-5 @ Delano
The Crusaders were riding high coming off a sweep of the holiday tournaments and prevailing in seventh straight games, but that came to a screeching halt against the upper crust of Section 2A. The good news is that both contests were tight, and Cathedral was tied 2-2 after two with Delano before the Tigers pulled away in the final stanza. On the other hand, there is a visit from top-ranked Hermantown looming, which is a whole different level of challenge.
Tue vs Pine City, Fr vs Hermantown

16. Cambridge-Isanti (9-2-0) [LW 15]
W 5-2 @ Sauk Rapids, W 3-2 (OT) vs Chisago Lakes
I feel a bit guilty about dropping the Bluejackets a spot after two wins last week, but Orono's leap had a chain reaction. C-I needed three third period goals to pull away from Sauk Rapids, and sophomore Will O'Donova, their leading scorer, was the hero Thursday night n extra time. In the weekly Jaxon Sibell report, C-I has now won eight straight under his watch, and he is posting a tidy 1.55 goals against and 0.943 save percentage. The upcoming schedule is a bit weird with games on Wednesday and Friday, but all three are eminently winnable.
Tue @ Becker, Wed @ Northern Edge, Fri vs Pine City

17. Chisago Lakes (7-3-1) [LW 16]
L 2-3 (OT) @ Cambridge-Isanti
That marks two straight 3–2 losses for the Wildcats, this one in heartbreaking fashion after they scored early in the third to tie things up. The offense has cooled down considerably after racking up huge totals early in the season. It's hard to rank Chisago anywhere but directly behind Cambridge-Isanti after an evenly played overtime loss on the road. The schedule is forgiving this week, with two rather soft opponents.
Tue vs Northern Edge, Fri vs Monticello

18. Northfield (5-4-1) [LW 17]
T 3-3 vs Mayo, L 2-6 vs Hastings
I guess we'll just keep the Raiders lurking around here. They are desperately hanging on by their fingernails given the run of poor recent results. Tying a mediocre Mayo and being blasted by Hastings (the score was 5-0 until a garbage time rally) doesn't exactly bolster Northfield's case, but there aren't many great options in this range, either. This team feels a lot like Fergus Falls in living up to the potential of their talent. There are two manageable games against 1AA competition this week, though that is a slippery statement for this group.
Thu @ Owatonna, Sat @ Century

19. Simley (11-3-0) [LW NR]
W 8-0 vs Two Rivers, W 7-1 @ SP Johnson
Impressive record, but the schedule is so weak that it is difficult to determine how good they really are. That will change drastically this week, however, as they face three of the best Metro East teams.
Tue vs Mahtomedi, Thu vs Hill-Murray, Sat @ Hastings

20. Thief River Falls (4-7-0) [LW NR]
L 5-6 @ EGF, W 6-3 @ Crookston
The Prowlers are the kings of close losses against good teams, and they added another one Thursday night. They traded goals with EGF the whole and had a great look to tie it at the buzzer. We'll see if TRF can pull off all win on the road versus the Lakers, which would solidify their stock.
Tue vs LotW, Thu @ Detroit Lakes, Sat vs Bemidji

Out: Mound Westonka (6-7-0) [LW 19], New Prague (4-4-1) [LW 20]

Tuesday Night (1/11/22) Class A Recap-

Games of the Night-
#4 Mahtomedi 2 #17 Simley 1

The Zephyrs found themselves in a slugfest on the road vs. 4A Simley. Similar cracks in the Zephyrs armor appeared as Mahtomedi really struggled generating offense in this one. While they controlled the pace of play they didn't threaten much until David Wolsfeld was able to sneak behind the Spartans D and bury a breakaway in the middle of the 3rd period and they hung on for a big 4A win from there.

Holy Family 8 #5 Delano 4
The Tigers historic struggles vs long time WCC Conference foe Holy Family continued. In a rarity the Tigers gave up EIGHT goals in a game that they never led despite outshooting and outplaying the Fire for stretches of the game.

#9 Alexandria 3 Brainerd 2 OT
The Cards found themselves in a battle with struggling Brainerd on the road. Luckily for them Brycen Berg played the hero as he had a two goal night including the GW in OT to survive the upset scare from the Warriors.

#16 Mankato East 2 Dodge County 1 OT
The Cougars won their 10th game of the year on the road vs their southern rivals Dodge County. Shea Gavin had the big game winning OT goal to give Mankato East a nice road win.

Other Notable Class A Games
Moorhead 8 #10 East Grand Forks 2- The Greenwave got smacked by the Spuds on the road Jaksen Panzer’s two goals were nice but not nearly enough as EGF’s goaltending and defensive nightmares continued.

Chanhassen 5 #12 Orono 2- Orono hung around with a very good young and up and coming AA Chanhassen team for two periods as they were tied 1-1. However, the Storm wore the Spartans out and scored four third period goals to win the game 5-2.

#14 St Cloud Cathedral 7 Pine City 1- The Crusaders young guns continued to shine as freshman John Hirschfeld’s 3 point night led the way as Cathedral won a game they should have over Section 5A Pine City.

#15 Cambridge 10 Becker Big Lake 3- Cambridge routed fellow Section 5A Becker Big Lake 10-3 behind Treyten Green’s big 5 point night.

#18 Chisago Lakes 4 Northern Edge 1- The Wildcats found themselves in a battle against a struggling Northern Edge program tied 1-1 after 2 periods of play However, behind their Super Senior duo Nicholas Helland & Ryan Schmidt Chisago Lakes was able to score three straight late 3rd period goals and get back in the win column.

WOW maybe the LPH people were listening. While I don't love everything about this poll itis the best Class A Poll I have seen in long long long time. No AA teams Top 10 looks fine I know Simley but hey they played Maht tough. I dont love SCC over EGF because EGF smoked the Crusaders but I get it.

One Complaint where is Cambridge?? My fear is they still have them as a 7AA school.

Otherwise major improvements

Thursday Night (1/13/22) Class A Recap-
Games of the Night-
#3 Little Falls 5 Princeton 0

The Flyers kept up their Section dominance as they went into Princeton, a place where they have struggled in the past and picked up a solid 5–0 win. It was the second line that provided the key offense in this one as Isaiah Jendro led the way with a solid three point night.

#5 Delano 6 Hutchinson 0
Delano was able to pick up a good Section and Conference road win over Hutchinson. In a game that was tight after two periods the Tigers behind Andres Peterson and Jesse Peterson two goals each the Tigers were able to blow open the game and cruise to the win.

#7 Minneapolis 1 #12 Orono 0 OT
Minneapolis picked up a crucial Section 2A win over Orono on the road. In a game where they controlled the pace of play and dominated the Spartans in the shot category outshooting them 50-21. It wasn't until overtime that they were able to solve the Orono goalie as Hank Davis played the hero with the GWG in OT and Alex Lamont was stout again in net picking up the shoutout

#11 Detroit Lakes 2 Thief River Falls 1
The Lakers won a crucial Section 8A game at home they took down the Prowlers 2-1. In a game that that was tied 1-1 after two periods of play it was the Lakers that were able to find the big goal in the third period to help secure their #3 seed in Section 8A and will now avoid 8A powerhouse Warroad until the Section Final.

Other Notable Class A Games
Grand Rapids 8 #6 Duluth Denfeld 1- The Hunters were dominated on their home ice by a good AA Grand Rapids team. Connor McClure’s 21st goal of the season was not nearly enough as Denfeld was blown out.

Blake 6 #8 Providence Academy 1- The Lions saw their ten game winning streak come to crashing halt as the Blake scored tow goal in all three periods and took out Providence soundly on their home ice six to one.

Fargo Davies 5 #10 East Grand Forks 0- East Grand Forks took on a good North Dakota Fargo Davies club and for the sixth straight game their defense and goaltending allowed at least five goals and Greenwave was shut out at home.

Rochester Mayo 5 #16 Mankato East 2- Mankato East jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the first period against Rochester Mayo but then it was all Spartans after that as they scored four unanswered goals for the 5-2 win.

Hill Murray 7 #17 Simley 1- The Spartans were dominated on their home ice by a very good AA Hill Murray team they fell behind earlier and were never really in the game.

#19 Northfield 6 Owatonna 2- Northfield showed signs of life vs AA Owatonna led by Sophomore Kamden Kaiser’s four point night the Raider were able to pull away and get a convincing win over the Huskies.

#20 Albert Lea 5 Mankato West 2- Albert Lea was able to depose of a struggling Mankato West team 5-2 to secure their 10th win of the season. Behind Junior Joseph Yoon’s 2 goals the Tigers used a big 4 goal 2nd period to pull away for the victory

I'm a bit surprised Park Rapids isn't in the top 10

Losses to Red Lake Falls, Detroit Lakes, Bagley/Fosston, Northern Lakes, Wadena-Deer Creek, Morris/Benson, Prairie Centre, and Crookston might be holding them out of the top 10. They are probably around the #6 or #7 seed in Section 8A.
