Shots 20-19 Zephyrs

Mahtomedi with two greasy goals from lower lines. Dardis stoned Wright on a penalty shot midway through first.

Fergus Falls 6, Alex 2 after two
Shots 27-14 FF

Otters have scored six unanswered. Their speed is too much for Alex to handle.

Are we sure STA is that good? That’s three ties against varying levels of competition, and not much goal production from an offense with two D1 commits up front.

Made the road trip--was fun experience to see the last year of Virginia hockey and the last year at Cuppoletti Arena.

The game, well...yikes. Credit to Ian Kangas in goal and a scrappy Virginia team for packing it in and playing great defense. They frustrated East all night, and the two goals East did get were both very muddy. It was very ugly at times (Virginia was perfectly content to ice the puck, time after time), but a great effort by the Blue Devils. With East, well, at least they found a way. They just aren't a very dynamic offensive machine at this point, despite a ton of possession and a couple of skilled players with bright futures. Reality for the Hounds this season lies somewhere between the 9-1 win over Marshall earlier this week and this effort tonight.

Yep, I think the 6A favorite has to be Fergus right now with Little Falls second. Alex looked okay in the first, but after that, ouch......

Alexandria drops to 5th in the Section QRF with Morris/Benson leap frogging them. Saturday's matchup at Cathedral is large as Cathedral is right on their heals in the QRF.

And Stang, glad I could find the link for you. It is on the Alex High School website, but finding it can take some digging (not the easiest athletics page to navigate).

FINAL

Strangely, STA with 3 straight ties

They're pretty good. I watched the 3rd period and OT of this game against Mahtomedi. STA dominated the 3rd period, and hit 2 posts. They also had several grade A chances and Dardis made some great stops. Same for the first few minutes of OT, although Mahtomedi had controlled play toward the end of OT and actually had some great chances.

But agreed, they're having a bit of a power outage the last few games. Especially compared to their early offensive success. None of the 3 teams they've tied are bad, but probably not considered upper echelon either.

Side note, I got to thinking last night about their 3 ties in a row and how many times that has happened. I recalled a few years back that Hill had a season with a lot of ties. After looking it up, they had 4 in the 2017-2018 season but none back-to-back. I also recalled Hermantown last year having a streak of ties in a row that I found interesting. Sure enough, last year Hermantown also had 3 ties in a row, to SCC, GR & CDH.

Strange to think that a team now two years in a row had a run of 3 ties in a season. Wonder if anyone has ever had 4 or more in a row. Final side note: STA plays Henry Sibley next. So with all due respect, I'm not counting on STA getting a 4th straight tie 8)

2010-2011 Roseville team had 4 consecutive ties (12/29 3-3 vs Blake, 12/30 1-1 vs Burnsville, 12/31 4-4 vs Lakeville South, 1/4 3-3 vs Mounds View)
